This study is to analyze the temporal and spatial distributions of solar radiation in South Korea. Solar radiation data is observed every minute at 22 KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) stations using pyranometer from January 2000 to August 2007. These data were calibrated using intensive comparative observation and solar radiation model. Intensive comparative observations are accomplished at 22 KMA stations between KNU (Kangnung (Gangneung-Wonju) National University) standard and station instruments during the month of August 2007. The solar radiation of a clear sky mainly is affected by precipitable water, solar altitude and geological height. Also old (raw) data is corrected by the solar radiation model only about clear day and is revised based on the temporal trend of instrument's sensitivity decrease. At all periods and all stations, differences between raw data (13.31 MJ/day) and corrected data (13.75 MJ/day) are 0.44 MJ/ day. So, the spatial distribution of solar radiation is calculated with seasonal and annual mean, and is the relationship with cloud amount is analyzed. The corrected data show a better consistency with the cloud amount than the old data.

In this study, heat collecting performance was study of flat plate solar collector by the angle. A method of study on were made turn out artificial sun by the angle of 0, 15, 30 degrees. The heat performances were measured the tube array surface temperature by thermo-couple. The winter season natural condition for 4 times on the angles of various general and emboss glass at optimum distance(0.68m) calculated of between sun and solar collector. To sum up temperature rise is appear more or less that emboss glass is all the better for general glass. The temperature variable at below of 30 degree was appear very less. The maximum performance of this system at that it is tilt angle of 30 with general glass is appear Q:11.54(kcal/min) and ${\Delta}T=18.9^{\circ}C$.
In this research, the effect of a heating system, which is powered by direct solar energy accumulated in phase change material (PCM) as heat storage material installed on the floor surface, on the cooling load was studied. Cooling load of a test building designed for this research was measured with fan coil unit and factors affecting it were also estimated. Experiments were performed with and without PCM installed on the building floor to understand the effect of the PCM on the cooling load. Additionally, to confirm the experiments results, the prediction calculation formula by average outside temperature and integrated solar radiation was composed using multivariate regression model. The results suggested that the heating system with PCM on the floor surface has the potential to shift electric power peak by radiating heat, stored during the daytime in it, at night, not increasing the total cooling load much.

Solar radiation components reflected by the sea surface ($R_{ss}\uparrow$) are additional energy sources comprising the solar radiation regime. Previous studies, based on observational approaches, indicated that $R_{ss}\uparrow$ is an available climatological resource. However, an estimation process for $R_{ss}\uparrow$ has not been established. In this case study over Jeju Island in South Korea, we applied a new estimation process to solar radiation modeling and discussed the spatial distribution of $R_{ss}\uparrow$ and its seasonal variation. Our results showed that the illuminated area and the intensity of $R_{ss}\uparrow$ became greatest at the winter solstice and least at the summer solstice. We estimated the illuminated area of $R_{ss}\uparrow$ as it expanded over the southern slope of Jeju Island. At the winter solstice, on a daily basis, the area and intensity of illumination by $R_{ss}\uparrow$ were $182.3km^2$ and $0.41\;MJ\;m^{-2}\;day\;{-1}$, respectively. Comparing the daily accumulative and instantaneous values of $R_{ss}\uparrow$ intensity, the difference was about 20 times greater in daily cases than in instantaneous cases. On the other hand, for instantaneous values, the $R_{ss}\uparrow$ intensity accounted for up to 33% of the three components, i.e., direct, diffuse and reflected radiation in winter solstice. In addition, it was estimated that the sea surface reflectance depended on the wind speed. Therefore, in a practical use of this revised model, wind conditions should be considered as a critical factor in estimating $R_{ss}\uparrow$.
Photosynthetic carbon fixation regulates air-sea $CO_2$ fluxes in the waters of coral reefs. However, little has been documented on the effects of solar UV radiation (UVR, 280-400 nm) upon photosynthetic behaviors of phytoplankton dwelling in these ecosystems. In order to evaluate the aforesaid, surface dwelling tropical coral reef phytoplankton assemblages collected from the South China Sea were exposed to solar radiation (i.e., photosynthetically active radiation [PAR] + UV radiation A [UVA] + UV radiation B [UVB], 280-700 nm; PAR + UVA, 320-700 nm; and PAR, 400-700 nm) under static or simulated-mixing conditions. Under the static condition, UVA and UVB significantly reduced the carbon fixation with the maximum of 22.4 and 15.3%, respectively; while lower UVR-related photosynthetic inhibition was observed in case of phytoplankton samples being subjected to mixing. At a moderate level of mixing (i.e., circulation time 80 min), the UVA and UVB caused inhibition were lowered by 52.1 and 79.6%, respectively. Based on this it could be stated that vertical mixing induced by winds and/or tides in the natural environments could reduce the inhibitory effect of solar UVR on phytoplankton productivity in the coral reefs water.

Accurate solar radiation data are critical to evaluate major physiological responses of plants. For most upland crops and orchard plants growing in complex terrain, however, it is not easy for farmers or agronomists to access solar irradiance data. Here we suggest a simple method using a sun-slope geometry based topographical coefficient to estimate daily solar irradiance on any sloping surfaces from global solar radiation measured at a nearby weather station. An hourly solar irradiance ratio ($W_i$) between sloping and horizontal surface is defined as multiplication of the relative solar intensity($k_i$) and the slope irradiance ratio($r_i$) at an hourly interval. The $k_i$ is the ratio of hourly solar radiation to the 24 hour cumulative radiation on a horizontal surface under clear sky conditions. The $r_i$ is the ratio of clear sky radiation on a given slope to that on a horizontal reference. Daily coefficient for slope correction is simply the sum of $W_i$ on each date. We calculated daily solar irradiance at 8 side slope locations circumventing a cone-shaped parasitic volcano(c.a., 570m diameter for the bottom circle and 90m bottom-to-top height) by multiplying these coefficients to the global solar radiation measured horizontally. Comparison with the measured slope irradiance from April 2007 to March 2008 resulted in the root mean square error(RMSE) of $1.61MJ\;m^{-2}$ for the whole period but the RMSE for April to October(i.e., major cropping season in Korea) was much lower and satisfied the 5% error tolerance for radiation measurement. The RMSE was smallest in October regardless of slope aspect, and the aspect dependent variation of RMSE was greatest in November. Annual variation in RMSE was greatest on north and south facing slopes, followed by southwest, southeast, and northwest slopes in decreasing order. Once the coefficients are prepared, global solar radiation data from nearby stations can be easily converted to the solar irradiance map at landscape scales with the operational reliability in cropping season.
This study was conducted to improve the power of PV module using a surface cooling system One of the unique characteristics of PV module is power drop as a module surface temperature increases due to the characteristics of crystalline silicon used in a solar cell. To overcome the output power reduction by temperature effect, module surface cooling using water circulation was performed. By cooling effect, module surface temperature drops maximally $20.3^{\circ}C$ predicting more than 10% power enhancement. Maximum deviation of voltage and current between a control and cooled module differed by 5.1 V and O.9A respectively. The maximum power enhancement by cooling system was 12.4% compared with a control module. In addition, cooling system can wash the module surface by water circulation so that extra power up of PV module can be achieved by removing particles on the surface which interfere solar radiation on the cells. Cooling system, besides, can reduce the maintenance cost and prevent accidents as a safety precaution while cleaning works. This system can be applied to the existing photovoltaic power generation facilities without any difficulties as well.
The amount of incident rays over inclination according to direction has been widely utilized as important data in installing photovoltaic systems. This is because the performance of the photovoltaic systems in much affected by angle and direction of incident rays. Recognizing that factors mentioned above are of importance, actual experiment on the moving route of the sun have been performed in this research to obtain the angle of inclination with which the maximum incident rays can be absorbed. After all, the standard for designing highly optimized photovoltaic systems will be provided for designers and employees working in the photovoltaic module related industries.
In this study, we analyzed the relationship between five factors: long-wave radiation, short-wave radiation, cloudiness, SVF and summer shelters. In the previous study, we recognized the correlation between single building SVF and long-wave radiation. Furthermore, this study attempted to confirm the relationship at the summer shelter with high solar radiation blocking rate. The observations are as follows. ① Cooling in summer shelters was not the effect of temperature but the effect of radiation reduction due to short-wave radiation shielding. ② In the case of the canopy tent with low heat capacity, the long-wave radiation was observed to be 16.7% higher per hour than the comparison control point due to the increase in surface temperature. ③ The long-wave radiation increase rate was different according to SVF, but showed very similar pattern according to the material characteristics of the summer shelters. ④ Passive Cooling effect on the type of summer shelters are determined by the size of the total long and short-wave radiation at that point.
Solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiances incident on a horizantal surface at Taegu of Korea during 1995-1998 were calculated with 5 min averges of measuremets taken every 30 seconds by a broadband UV-B sensor. The maximum and minimum of monthly averages of daily UV-B dose were 15.89 KJ m-2 day-1 in April and 3.91KJm-2 day-1 on May 22, 1998 and 1.230W m-2 at 12 : 45, July 13, 1998, respectively. Increasing trend in annual maximum of instantaneous UV-B radiation was averaged to 12.0% per year during 1995-1998 of observation period.
