  • This paper is aimed to develop an optical method for measuring 3-dimensional shapes of specular objects having curved surfaces. The existing methods measuring the shapes of specular objects have several common disadvantages: they may not work properly if the surface is highly specular like mirror surface or if the reflectance property is not uniform over the surface. And, they often require the a priori knowledege about the surface reflectance. To overcome these disadvantages, the measurement using double pass retroreflection method is proposed in this paper. For this measurement principle, an experimental measuring system is designed and prepared which is composed of a galvanometer scanner, a beam splitter, a laser source, a CCD camera, and a reflector made of retroreflective material. To verify the effectiveness of the measurement system a series of experiments are performaed for various specular objects. The results observed from the experiments show that the developed optical sensing system can be an effective mean of measuring the 3-D shapes of specular objects.

  • In this study, the elastomer cover, a new contact material, was developed to establish the customized ultrasonic measurement considering surface irregularities of stone cultural heritages. The cover exhibits high elastic force and wear resistance because it has tensile strength of 17MPa and elongation of 625%. In addition, as a result of comparative experiments for the seven types according to transducers and contact materials including the elastomer cover, rock surface irregularities significantly affect attenuation of ultrasonic velocity. The phenomenon was more noticeable in the chiseling finish and indirect transmission measurement rather than the dabbed finish and direct transmission measurement. However, the Type F using the exponential transducer and elastomer cover showed stable P-wave velocity and high amplitude regardless of the surface irregularities. This because the elastomer cover sufficiently sticks to surface irregularities and removes pores between a transducer and a rock specimen. Therefore, the Type F should be used for the ultrasonic measurement of stone cultural heritages with surface irregularities.

  • In modern industry, the accuracy and the sulfate-finish requirements for machined parts have been becoming ever more stringent. In addition, the measurement and understanding of surface topography is rapidly attracting the attention of the physicist and chemist as well as the engineer. Optical measuring method is used in vibration measurement, crack and defect detection with the advent of opto-mechatronics, and it is expected to play an important role in surface topography. In this study, the principle of confocal microscope is described, and the advanced 3-D surface measuring system that has better performance than the traditional confocal microscope is developed. Suitable fixtures arc developed and integrated with the computer system for generating 3-D surface and form data. Software for data acquisition and analysis of various parameters in surface geometrical features has been developed.

  • The monitoring of a free surface generated by waterjet cutting technology is very important for an efficient construction process. In this study, experiments using a laser sensor were performed to provide a data processing method and to determine optimized parameters. The experimental parameters here are the angular resolution, measurement distance, and free surface cutting shape. The results show that the monitoring resolution increases with a decrease in the angular resolution and the horizontal measurement distance and with an increase in the cutting (free surface) width. This laser monitoring method can be applied during the measurement of free surface shapes and depths in situ.

  • In - process measurement of surface roughness is introduced which employs an optical method by using laser beam. This makes it possible to detect the surface roughness not only along the circurnferential path but also along the feed direction even during machining. The maximum roughness value is always abtainable from the reading along the feed direction.

  • This paper describes the measurement of thickness of still air layer above fabrics and its relationship to structural properties of fabrics. Rayon fabrics - of both filament and spun - and wool nylon blended fabrics varied in terms of surface hairiness were used. Temperature and relative humidity above fabrics were measured at the various distances from the fabric surface. Increase in the thickness of fabric, fabric weight, yarn count, and crimp resulted increase in thickness of still air layer above fabric. Surface hairiness of fabrics as well as the structural properties were found to be related with the thickness of still air layer above fabrics.

  • A new approach for the measurement of the surface coverages of monomolecular films fabricated by spontaneous adsorption of thiol compounds on gold is described. It is based on the mass change measurement with EQCM for the reductive electrochemical desorption of thiol in aqueous KOH solution. The results were compared with that of charge calculation during electrochemical desorption. The surface coverage value for eicosanethiol agrees with that obtained by charge calculation of electrochemical reduction as well as that expected from a geometrical model of the compact monolayer.

  • The ophthalmic lens manufacturing processes need to extract the aspherical surface equation from the unknown surface since its real profile can be adjusted by the process variables to make the ideal curve without the optical aberration. This paper presents a procedure to get the aspherical surface equation of an aspherical ophthalmic lens. Aspherical form generally consists of the Schulz formula to describe its profile. Therefore, the base curvature, conic constant, and high-order polynomial coefficient should be set to the original design equation. To find an estimated aspherical profile, firstly lens profile is measured by a contact profiler, which has a sub-micrometer measurement resolution. A mathematical tool is based on the minimization of the error function to get the estimated aspherical surface equation from the scanned aspherical profile. Error minimization step uses the Nelder-Mead simplex (direct search) method. The result of the refractive power measurement is compared with the curvature distribution on the estimated aspherical surface equation
