  • The fabrication of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels involves several thermal processes such as imidization of the alignment layer (AL) and annealing of the rubbed polyimide AL. The nature of these processes on the LC alignment, especially on the pretilt angle (Θ$\_$p/) has been systematically studied, employing various types of polyimide structures. The imidization effect depends on the nature of polyimid precursors; Θ$\^$p/ increases with the degree of the imidization for the main-chain type of ALs, due to the decrease in the surface polarity, but this relation is not applicable to the alkylated ones in which the steric effect at the AL surface by the aliphatic side chains is dominant. Annealing of the rubbed polyimide AL deteriorates its rubbing-induced molecular orientation and subsequently the overlying LC alignment, resulting in the decrease in Θ$\_$p/. Especially, annealing of the LC cell affects the LC-AL interaction as well as the AL orientation and thus its effect on LC alignment depends sensitively on the nature of LC-polyimide interface; aromatic moiety in the polyimide structure gives better thermal stability of LC alignment while fluorinated polyimide ALs induce the less stable alignment.

  • Aligning capabilities of nematic liquid crystal(NLC) using an in-situ photo-alignment method with obliquely polarized UV exposure on a polyimide (PI) surface for homeotropic alignment were studied. The high angle for NLC can be measured by obliquely UV exposure of 30°on the PI surface for 10∼20 min. The pretilt angle of NLC generated using the in-situ photo-alignment was higher than that of a conventional photo-alignment method. Finally, we suggest that the control of pretilt angle in NLC with obliquely polarized UV exposure during imidization of the polymer for homeotropic alignment is promising method to generate high pretilt angle.

  • In this paper, we have improved a novel high tilted optically compensated bend (OCB) (HTOCB) mode by using high tilt angle that was generated by the unique baking condition on the homeotropic alignment layer. The high tilt angle of liquid crystal (LC) was generated by new alignment process that tilt angle changed homeotropic state to homeogenous state using Hot-plate equipment; we obtained about $40\~50^{\circ}$ tilt angle with negative and positive dielectric anisotropy on the homeotropic polyimide (PI), and then LC tilt angle decreased as increasing baking temperature and time. At last, we obtained about $10^{\circ}$ with positive type NLC $({\Delta}n>0)$. Also, the LC tilt angle of positive type NLC $({\Delta}n>0)$ decreased as increasing rubbing strength at the same baking temperature and time. The novel LC operating mode (HTOCB) that used the high tilt angle by the new alignment method was improved. The response time of the novel HTOCB cell was faster than that of conventional OCB cell. We suggest that the developed the novel HTOCB cell using control of tilt angle on the homeotropic surface is a promising technique for the achievement of a fast response time and a high contrast ratio.

  • In this study, the response surface modeling of the pretilt angle control using in-situ photoalignment method with oblique UV exposure .on plastic substrate is investigated. The pretilt angle is the main factor to determine the alignment of the liquid crystal display. The response surface model is used to analyze the variation of the pretilt angle on the various process conditions. Heating temperature and UV exposure time are considered as input factors. The liquid crystal (LC) pretilt angle increased with increasing heating temperature and UV exposure time. The analysis of variance is used to analyze the statistical significance and the effect plots are also investigated to examine the relationship between the process parameters and the response.

  • We have studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment effects on a nitrogen-doped diamond-like carbon (NDLC) thin film layer with ion beam irradiation. The pretilt angle for NLC on the NDLC surface with ion beam exposure was observed below 1 degree. Also, we had the good LC alignment characteristics on the NDLC thin films with ion beam exposure of 1800 eV. In thermal stability experiments, the alignment defect of the NLC on the NDLC surface with ion beam irradiation above annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ can be observed. Therefore, the good thermal stability and LC alignment for NLC by ion beam aligned NDLC thin films can be achieved.

  • In this study, we investigated the generation of pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in a cell with oblique non-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surfaces. It was found that the monodomain alignment of the NLC is obtained in a cell with an angle of incidence of 70∼85$^{\circ}$on PI surface. We consider that the monodomain alignment of NLC is attributed to anisotropic dispersion force effect due to Photo-depolymerization of polymer on PI surfaces. Also, pretilt angle of NLC is generated about 3$^{\circ}$ with an angle of incidence of 70∼75$^{\circ}$. It is considered that the pretilt angle generation in NLC is attributed to interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surfaces.

  • New photh-alignment materials based on PCEMA (poly(4-methacryloyloxylchalcone))for liquid crystal (LC) aligning were synthesized. and the electro(EO) characteristics of the photo-aligned TN-LCD were investigated. The excellent LC alignment and voltage-transmittance (V-T) characteristics for the photo-aligned TN-LCD on PCEMA surface containing more cinnamoly group can be achieved. However the reverse tilt disclinations for the photo-aligned TN-LCD on the PCEMA surface containing more OH group were observed. Consequently we suggest that the LC aligning capabilities can be increased by increasing of cinnamoly group on the PCEMA surfaces.

  • We demonstrate the wide-viewing characteristics of a twisted nematic liquid crystal display (LCD) with self-formed micro-domains through the topographical alignment and fringe field effects of dielectric surface gratings (DSG). The mutual optical compensation between micro-domains within each pixel eliminates the contrast inversion phenomenon of TN mode without complex surface treatments.

  • We synthesised a novel photo-alignment material of PCEMA (poly(cinnamolyethyl methacrylate)) on photo-dimerization reaction. Next we investigated the electro-optical (EO) characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with linearly polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on PCEHA surface. The excellent voltage-transmittance characteristics of photo-aligned TN-LCD on PCEMA surface were obtained. The threshold voltage of photo-aligned TN-LCD decreases with increasing the UV light irradiation time on PCEMA surface. Also, the response time of photo-aligned TN-LCD on PCEMA surface is almost the same as rubbing-aligned TN-LCD.

  • In this study, we propose a liquid crystal-based polarization control technology that can control polarization by adjusting the voltage applied to the liquid crystal, and apply it to a Closed-circuit Television (CCTV) to transmit only the desired angle of polarized light. CCTV with conventional polarizing films cannot control polarization because they focus on backlight compensation, so light reflected from the water surface or highlights reflected from vehicles interfere with subject identification. However, the Vertical Alignment mode allows the polarization to be adjusted electrically, so that only the polarized light at the user's desired angle is transmitted, eliminating reflected highlights. The images obtained using this technique are optimized by computer software. Liquid crystal polarization panels, which can electrically control the polarization angle, transmittance, and polarization rate, have been applied to polarized image monitoring device to improve subject identification in conventional CCTV.
