  • We investigate effects of vertical resolution on a parameterization of convective gravity waves (SGWDC) developed in Song and Chun (2005) through offline and online tests of the SGWDC parameterization. For offline tests, numerical simulations of the SGWDC parameterization with different number of vertical levels (L66, L117, L168, L219 and L270) from the surface to 120 km are performed for two different saturation methods. It is found that the wave momentum forcing is overestimated or underestimated in the SGWDC parameterization with different vertical resolutions, depending on the saturation methods. The increase of the vertical resolution modifies the magnitude and distribution of the wave momentum forcing in the parameterization, and this is mainly due to modification of wave saturation levels in the wave saturation processes. However the wave momentum forcing converges in the parameterizations with vertical resolutions higher than L168. For online test, the SGWDC parameterizations with vertical resolutions of L66 and L164 are implemented into a climate model with vertical resolution of L66, separately. In the L164 experiment, the wave momentum forcing decreases in the mid-latitude winter mesosphere in July and zonal mean flows are more realistically reproduced in the tropical regions compared with those in the L66 experiment. These results demonstrate that the wave momentum forcing calculated in the parameterization is sensitive to the vertical resolution, and the implementation of the SGWDC parameterization into high resolution models is required for realistic representation of the gravity wave momentum forcing in large-scale numerical models.

  • In this paper, the high-order spectral/boundary-element method is developed to calculate the 3-dimensional water waves generated by a submerged body. This method is one of the most efficient numerical methods by which the nonlinear gravity waves can be simulated Tn time-domain. Three-dimensional free-surface flows generated by a submerged sphere which is moving under the free-surface are calculated. Through example calculations, nonlinear effects on free-surface profiles and hydrodynamic forces are shown. Comparisons with others' results show good agreements.

  • Dam-break flows, a type of very shallow gravity-driven flow, are substantially influenced by resistance forces due to viscous friction and turbulence. Assuming turbulent flow, the main focus of this study is to validate the increase of drag forces caused by surface roughness and especially turbulence intensity. A Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) approach with the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is used for this study, where the free surface motion is captured by using a volume of fluid(VOF) method. Surface roughness effects are considered through the law of the wall modified for roughness, while the initial turbulence intensity which determines the lowest level of turbulence in the flow domain of interest is used for the variation of turbulence intensity. It has been found that the numerical results at higher turbulence intensities show a reasonably good agreement with the physical aspects shown by two different dam-break experiments without and with the impact of water.

  • A new dispersion model for dense gas is constructed in the Lagrangian framework. Prediction of concentration by the proposed model is compared with measure data obtained in the experiment conducted in Thorney Island in 1984. Two major effects of dense gas dispersion, gravity slumping and stratification effect, are successfully incorporated into LDM (Lagrangian dense gas model). Entrainment effect is naturally modelled by introducing stochastic dispersion model with the effect of turbulence suppression by stratification. Not only various releasing conditions but also complex terrain can be extended to, although proposed model is appropriate for flat terrain.

  • We present a methodology to validate with monitoring data finite element models of existing concrete dams: numerical analyses are performed to assess the structural response under the effects of seasonal loading conditions, represented by hydrostatic pressure on the upstream-downstream dam surfaces and thermal variations as recorded by a thermometers network. We show that the stiffness effect of the rock foundation and the surface degradation of concrete due to aging are crucial aspects to be accounted for a correct interpretation of the real behavior. This work summarizes some general procedures developed by this research group at Politecnico di Milano on traditional static monitoring systems and two significant case studies: a buttress gravity and an arch-gravity dam.

  • The heat transfer phenomenon was investigated in this study when a circular water jet with low velocity flows to the downward facing heated circular plate and against the direction of gravity. Data are presented for jet flow rate between 0.23 and 2.3 l/min, jet fluid temperature of 24$^{\circ}C$, heat fluxes between 345 and 687 W/m$^2$, H/D=1, 2 and 3 with a single round jet diameter 2mm. The effects of heat flux, jet velocity and H/D on the local heat transfer are investigated in for the various regions of jet impingement. The local heat transfer distributions are analyzed based on the visualization of jet flow field. Data from experimental results are correlated by expressions of the form Nu=0.01$Re^{0.58}{\cdot}Pr^{0.4}$.

Experimental investigation is performed for a single round jet diameter 4mm, 6mm, and 8mm with the jet velocity 2.4m/s and jet fluid temperature of $24^{\circ}C$, varied the ratio of nozzle clearance/nozzle diameter (H/D)1, 2, 3, 6, and 8, on circular plate isothermal condition with $85^{\circ}C$. The local convection heat transfer coefficient distributions are analyzed based on the visualization of jet flow field. • In order to rpovide proper SMT design criteria in a systematic way, a mathematical formulation has been developed to predict the configuration of the solder fillet formed between the gullwing type lead and rectangular pad. Effects of SMT design parameters such as the solder volume and pad dimension on the solder profile are investigated using the FEM that calculates the 3D configuration by minimizing the energy due to surface tension and gravity in the equilibrium state. Design criteria of QFP and SOP are illustrated by plotting the acceptable range of the solder volume with respect to the length and width ratios of the pad and lead. The results show that the acceptable design range increases with increase in the pad length and width. The pad length has more significant effects on design criteria compared with the pad width, and Bond number can be utilized to predict the joint quality.

  • Based on a surface design with rectangular cavities and channels, we investigated the effects of gravity and capillary pressure on pool-boiling Critical Heat Flux (CHF). The microcavity structures could prevent liquid flow by the capillary pressure effect. In addition, the microchannel structures contributed to induce one-dimensional liquid flow on the boiling surface. The relationship between the CHF and capillary flow was clearly established. The driving potentials for the liquid supply into a boiling surface can be generated by the gravitational head and capillary pressure. Through an analysis of pool boiling and visualization data, we reveal that the liquid supplement to maintain the nucleate boiling condition on a boiling surface is closely related to the gravitational pressure head and capillary pressure effect.

  • Prediction of the product shape in sheet casting process is performed from the numerical simulation. A three-dimensional finite element method is used to investigate the flow behavior and to examine the effects of processing conditions on the sheet produced. Effects of inertia, gravity, surface tension and non-Newtonian viscosity on the thickness profile of the sheet are considered since the edge bead and the flow patterns in the chill roll region have great influence on the quality of the products. In the numerical simulation with free surface flows, the spine method is adopted to update the free surface, and the force-free boundary condition is imposed along the take-up plane to avoid severe singularity problems existing at the take-up plane. From the numerical results of steady isothermal flows of a generalized Newtonian fluid, it is shown that the draw ratio plays a major role in predicting the shape of the final sheet produced and the surface tension has considerable effect on the bead thickness ratio and the bead width fraction, while shear-thinning and/or tension-thickening viscosity affect the degree of neck-in.
