  • The effect of pH on the corrosion characteristics in the dissimilar friction welded zone of IN713LC-SCM440 in the loaded torsional stress was studied. The corrosion experiment was performed for 120 hours on the specimens with five steps of pH. The surface corrosion pattern of the SCM440 area showed global corrosion and narrow pitting, which was caused by galvanic corrosion between friction welded IN713LC and SCM440, but corrosion did not proceeded from the IN713LC area. The average relative electrode potential gradually tends to decrease with the elapse of the immersion time in the acidity area. The average corrosion current also gradually tend to decrease The corrosion rate showed a larger value when the average relative electrode potential was higher and the average relative current was lower. The corrosion rate showed a larger value when the average relative electrode potential was higher in the acidity area, and it showed large when the average relative electrode potential was lower in the alkalinity area.

  • Metalworking fluids (MWFs) are fluids used during machining and grinding to prolong the life of the tool, carry away debris, and protect the surfaces of work pieces. These fluids reduce friction between the cutting tool and the work surface, reduce wear and galling, protect surface characteristics, reduce surface adhesion or welding and carry away generated heat. Workers can be exposed to MWFs by inhaling aerosols (mists) and by skin contact with the fluid. Skin contact occurs by dipping the hands into the fluid, splashes, or handling workpieces coated with the fluids. The amount of mist generated (and the resulting level of exposure) depends on many factors. To reduce the environmental pollution wastes and the potential health risks associated with occupational exposures to MWFs, it is required to establish optimum MWFs supply method and condition with minimum quantity in all over the mechanical machining field including high-speed type heavy cutting process.

  • The corrosion experiment was performed for 120 hours on the specimens in the natural seawater tank with four steps of the loaded torsional stress. The surface corrosion pattern of SCM440 area was showed global corrosion and narrow pitting, that was cause by galvanic corrosion between friction welded IN713LC and SCM440. But corrosion does not proceeded from IN713LC area. Initially, the average relative electrode potential and corrosion current were decreased suddenly, by and large, it was stabilized gradually tend to decreasing with the elapse of the immersion time. The corrosion rate was decreased by increasing the load stress, but 200 MPa specimen was showed most large value.

  • The strip Au bumps are bonded using longitudinal ultrasonic far the electronic package. Au bumps on the chip and substrate are aligned in a crossed shape, and the ultrasonic is imposed on the chip to form the solid-state bond between the Au bumps. Deformed bump shapes are calculated using the finite element method, and the bond strength is measured experimentally. The crossed strip Au bumps are deformed similar to the saddle, which provides larger contact surface area and higher friction force. Compared with the previous bonding method between the Au bump and planar pad, higher bond strength is obtained using the crossed strip bumps.

  • The presence of a crack can increase the local stress or strain, which can cause inelastic deformation and significantly reduce the life of a component or structure. Therefore, in this study, the fatigue crack growth (FCG) behaviors of friction stir welded Al 2024-T3 and Al 7075-T6 specimens were examined, with fatigue cracks growing parallel to the dynamically recrystallized zone at variable ${\Delta}K$ values and an R ratio of 0.3. In addition, the FCG values of the base metal Al 2024-T3 and Al 7075-T6 were tested under the same conditions and parameters as comparative groups. The results showed that compared with the base metal Al 2024 specimen, which had the best fatigue property, the welded specimen had only 88% of the fatigue cycles.

  • In this paper, in order to investigate the effects of marco and microscopic observations of fatigue crack growth in friction stir welded (FSWed) 7075-T651 aluminum alloy plates, fatigue crack growth tests were performed under constant amplitude loading condition at room temperature with three different pre-cack locations, namely base metal (BM-CL) and two kinds of pre-crack locations in welded joints, weld metal (WM-CL) and heat affected zone (HAZ-CL) specimens. The fatigue crack growth behavior of FSWed 7075-T651 aluminum alloy plates were discussed based on the marco and microscopic fractographic observations. The marcoscopic aspects of surface crack growth path for BM-CL and HAZ-CL specimens indicate relatively straight lines, however, the crack growth paths of WM-CL specimens grow first straight and by followed toward the TMAZ and HAZ. The microscopic aspects of fatigue fracture for BM-CL and HAZ-CL specimens indicate typical fatigue striation, but WM-CL showed intergranular fracture pattern by micro structural changes of FSW process.

  • The fatigue crack propagation characteristics were investigated on dissimilar friction weld of two kind of heat-resisting steels (STR3 and STR35) commonly used in valve materials for vehicles. A small circular artificial defect was machined to induce fatigue crack at bonded line, heat affected zone and base metal of the weld on the surface of the specimens. From the results of the experiment, the fatigue limits of the materials STR3 and STR35 were obtained to be 429.0MPa and 409.4MPa respectably. The STR35 base metal and 1.0mm HAZ specimens showed 190% and 82% higher fatigue life than STR3 base metal. And the fatigue life of 1.0mm HAZ specimen was shown 99% on STR3 and 29% on STR35 higher than that of their base metal. But the fatigue life of weld interface specimen was shown 18% on STR3 and 72% on STR35 lower than that of their base metal because of the weld interface separation.

  • When a high-energy ultrasound propagates through a solid body that contains a crack or a delamination, the two faces of the defect do not ordinarily vibrate in unison, and dissipative phenomena such as friction, rubbing and clapping between the faces will convert some of the vibrational energy to heat. By combining this heating effect with infrared imaging, one can detect a subsurface defect in material efficiently. In this paper a detection of the welding defect of thin SUS 304 plates using the UIR (ultrasonic infrared imaging) technology is described. A low frequency (20kHz) ultrasonic transducer was used to infuse the welded thin SUS 304 plates with a short pulse of sound for 280ms. The ultrasonic source has a maximum power of 2kW. The surface temperature of the area under inspection is imaged by a thermal infrared camera that is coupled to a fast frame grabber in a computer. The hot spots, which are a small area around the defect tip and heated up highly, are observed. From the sequence of the thermosonic images, the location of defective or inhomogeneous regions in the welded thin SUS 304 plates can be detected easily.
