  • Anatomical characteristics of kenaf were investigated in transverse, radial and tangential direction by optical and scanning electron micrograph. Kenaf was made up of bast fibers, wood fibers, vessels and parenchyma cells. Bast fibers were long slender cells with different types of pits. The shape of wood fibers were in various ways and pointed at the ends. The pits were observed on the surface of bast fibers. Kenafs were diffuse and radial porous. and composed of solitary pores and two or three radial pore multiples. Various types of vessels were observed. The pits showed alternate pitting and larger diameter than other cells. Parenchyma cells were rectangular or square with different shapes of pith parenchyma cells compared to conventional types of parenchyma cells in wood. The number of pith on the surfaces were small.

  • In order to investigate the influencing factors of flotation fractionation. flotations were performed at varied conditions. The selectivity of fines fractionation is mainly affected by long fibers flocculating degree and if it were not for sufficient flocculation of long fibers, increase of long fibers loss could not be avoided. The amount of flotation reject totally depends on the stability of forth floated on the stock surface. only the small size fines stabilize the froth as they hinder the drainage of liquid lamella in flotation-froth. Two important factors of flotation conditions are improving the flocculation of long fibers and increasing the amount of flotation reject. Changing a flotation flux or an air-mixing ratio with aims of increasing the flocculation of fibers and reject ratios is in conflict. In order to satisfy the both conditions for reducing long fiber loss and for increasing flotation reject a new fractionation promoter is urgently required.

  • In this study, conjugate fibers were prepared from 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol-modified polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin using side by side conjugate spinning, sea-island type conjugate spinning, and split type conjugate spinning methods, and the properties of the conjugate fibers were investigated via several techniques. When viscosity increased, the tenacity of side by side conjugate fibers was increased, whereas elongation decreased. The sea-island conjugate fibers showed lower weight loss and surface color difference (K/S) values relative to that of regular PET fibers at the same conditions. The SEM results indicate that orange type spilt readily produced at a temperature range of 120 - 140$^{\circ}C$.

  • Henequen fibers were treated by electron beam irradiation and by NaOH to make surface modification for better bonding in the manufacture of biocomposite. Impurity removal and carbonyl group formation were noticed in the previous study by electron beam irradiation, but extensive cellulose degradation were also noticed. To evaluate the effects of electron beam irradiation on cellulosic fibers further, henequen fibers, cotton pulp, cotton fibers, and cellophane were irradiated by electron beam, and their changes of cellulose viscosity, chemical composition, and tensile strength were measured and analyzed.

  • A pineapple protease, bromelain, was used to improve the dyeing properties of protein fibers such as wool and silk. The optimal condition for the activity of the pineapple protease was about $60^{\circ}C$ at pH 7. The wool and silk were treated with the protease extracted from a pineapple and the K/S values of the dyed wool and silk were measured using a spectrophotometer in order to compare the dye uptake. The protease treatment enhanced the dyeing properties of protein fibers without severe changes in mechanical properties. The surface appearances of protease-treated fibers were observed by microscopy.

  • Zirconium acetate solution which was obtained from $ZrOCl_2$.$8H_2O$ was condensed polymerized and drawn to fibers by pulling method. Drawn gel fibers fired at 130$0^{\circ}C$ were short porous and mechanically weak. But addition of CaO about 13m/o caused the fibers to have the cubic structure and relatively dense microstructure. In order to clarify the condition for the synthesis of zirconia fibers viscosity measurement DTA-TG analysis X-ray diffraction infrared spectroscopy, SEM and specific surface area were studied.

  • The Co oxide microfibers were synthesized using the electrospinning process and formed $Co_3O_4$ microfibers after being calcined at high temperatures. The calcination temperature influenced the diameters, morphology, crystalline phase, and chemical environment of the fibers. The surface morphology of the obtained fibers was examined by using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). As the calcination temperatures increased from room temperature to 873 and 1173 K, the diameters of the cobalt oxide fibers decreased from 1.79 to 0.82 and 0.32 mm, respectively. The structure of the fibers was investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The calcined $Co_3O_4$ fibers had crystalline face-centered cubic (fcc) structure. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results revealed that increasing the calcination temperature promoted the formation of $Co^{2+}$ and $Co^{3+}$ species.

  • Poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers were modified by deep UV irradiation which was produced by a low pressure mercury lamp. FT-IR and XPS analyses were used to elucidate the surface chemical composition of PET fibers treated with UV. Relative $O_{1s}$ intensity increased considerably and it was found that oxygen was incorporated in the form of COO on the fiber surface. FT-IR and XPS analyses proved the existence of carboxylic groups on the surfaces and the adsorption test of cationic compound further supported these results. The concentration of carboxylic acid group on the surface increased remarkably with Increasing irradiation time. XPS analysis and adsorption experiments proved that the surface structure of the UV-irradiated PET fibers were stable for 12 months. Antibacterial property and the deodorization rate of UV-irradiated PET fibers adsorbed with the berberine compound were investigated. Reduction rates of bacteria increased by about 21 to 99% compared to unradiated PET fiber. Deodorization rates of 23% for unradiated PET fiber increased to about 75% for 30 min irradiated samples.s.

  • Natural fibers derived from lignocellulosic materials are considered to be more environment-friendly than petroleum-based synthetic fibers. Several natural fibers, such as seedpod fibers, have a potential for development, including kapok and balsa fibers. The characteristics of both fibers were evaluated to determine their suitability for specific valuable applications. The purpose of this study was to analyze some important fundamental properties of kapok and balsa fibers, including their dimensions, morphology, chemical components, and wettability. The results showed that the average fiber lengths for kapok and balsa were 1.63 and 1.30 cm, respectively. Kapok and balsa fibers had thin cell walls and large lumens filled with air. The kapok fiber was composed of 38.09% ${\alpha}-cellulose$, 14.09% lignin, and 2.34% wax content, whereas the balsa fiber was composed 44.62% ${\alpha}-cellulose$, 16.60% lignin, and 2.29% wax content. The characteristics of kapok and balsa fibers were examined by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry analyses. The contact angle of the distilled water on kapok and balsa fibers was more than $90^{\circ}$, indicating that both fibers are hydrophobic with low wettability properties because of to the presence of wax on the fiber surface.

  • The modification of coal-tar pitch has been carried out by heat treatment of pitch at different temperatures in the range ($300^{\circ}-400^{\circ}C$) for different times (2-5 hrs) in air and nitrogen. The pitch heat treated in air at lower temperature ($300^{\circ}C$) exhibit increase in softening point by $20^{\circ}C$ as compared to only $2^{\circ}C$ when treated in nitrogen. The changes are faster in air than in pure nitrogen. Pitch as such as well as after heat treatment were further treated with metal complexes by solution route. Silver intake has been found to increase from 0.5 to 0.8 % in nitrogen treated pitch while the uptake is found to decrease for pitches treated in air at $350^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs. Experiments have also been made to incorporate silver into PAN and PAN-ox fibers through solution route. The metal intake has been found to be more in PAN-ox fibers than in PAN as such. Metal loaded carbon composites have been made by using metal loaded fibers as well as cokes. These composites as such exhibit higher surface oxygen complexes but decrease after activation.
