In order to image the distribution of permeability in granitic rocks, we carried out two-dimensional (2D) resistivity profiling, together with in-situ permeability tests, electrical logging of boreholes, and resistivity measurements of rock core samples in a laboratory. Based on the electrical logging and in-situ permeability data from boreholes, we obtained empirical equations which relate resistivity and permeability of the granitic rocks in the area studied. We then applied the empirical equation to a 2D resistivity section, to produce a 2D permeability section of the granitic rocks. In this paper, we present details of the field data and of the procedure for conversion from the resistivity section to a permeability section. The observed relationship between resistivity and permeability of the rocks is also discussed.
We present results of the analysis of FLS 1718+59, a galaxy-galaxy gravitational lens system in the Spitzer First Look Survey (FLS) Field. A background galaxy (z = 0.245) is severely distorted by an elliptical galaxy (z = 0.08), by gravitational lensing. We analyze this system by several methods, including Ellipse and Galfit fitting, gravitational lens modeling (gravlens), and SED fitting. Properties of the lens galaxy can be obtained: from Galfit we measure the effective radius and the average surface brightness inside it, and from gravlens we estimate the total mass inside the Einstein radius (lensing mass). We use these parameters to check that the lens galaxy is located on the Fundamental Plane. Also, we conduct SED fitting for the lens galaxy and estimate the stellar mass, and compare this with the lensing mass of the lens galaxy to check the M-L relation.

The Yongjang mine is located in Masan City, Gyeongsangnamdo, which consists of a black shale possessing quartzite veins with othercompositions such as gold, silver, and sublimated sulfur. The average width of the veins is $9{\sim}17cm$ and the average degrees of the gold and silver are 3.6 g/t and 113.6 g/t respectively. A regional and a detailed scale electrical resistivity surveys are conducted to determine the existence of the mineralization zones and the linear structures in the study area. In addition, surveys of a several different array methods are conducted such as dipole-dipole array in the surface and borehole-to-surface array, surface-to-borehole array, and dipole-dipole array in the borehole. The method of element division can be applied to the region in which the borehole is curved, inclined or the distance between the electrodes is shorter than that of nodal points, because the coordinate of each electrode cannot be assigned directly to the nodal point if several electrodes are in an element. Yongjang vein is extended longer under the subsurface than on the surface in the images reconstructed from the 3D inversion. Therefore, it is recognized that the 3-D interpretation of the electrical resistivity survey is a very useful method to figure out the existence of strike and extension direction because the mineralization zones and the linear structures are shown in each depth.
The Global Expansion Roadmap published by the International Space Exploration Coordination Group, which is organized by space agencies around the world, presents future lunar exploration guidance and stresses a lunar habitat program to utilize lunar resources. The Moon attracts attention as an outpost for deep space exploration. Simulating lunar surface environments is required to evaluate the performances of various equipment for future lunar surface missions. In this paper, an experimental study was conducted to simulate high vacuum pressure and cryogenic temperature of the permanent shadow regions in the lunar south pole, which is a promising candidate for landing and outpost construction. The establishment of an efficient dirty thermal vacuum chamber (DTVC) operation process has never been presented. One-dimensional ground cooling tests were conducted with various vacuum pressures with the Korean Lunar Simulant type-1 (KLS-1) in DTVC. The most advantageous vacuum pressure was found to be 30-80 mbar, considering the cooling efficiency and equipment stability. However, peripheral cooling is also required to simulate a cryogenic for not sublimating ice in a high vacuum pressure. In this study, an efficient peripheral cooling operation process was proposed by applying the frost ratio concept.
We measure the degree of polarization of the lunar regolith to map the distributions of the age and the particle size. We use a 12cm refracting telescope with a 2k-square pixel color CCD (R band) and a polarization filter. The angular resolution obtained is 3.02 km/pixel. Our goal is to obtain a map of the lunar particle size distribution on the lunar regolith and then that of the age distribution. Polarization of the light scattered by lunar surface contains information on their mean particle size. The mean particle size of the lunar surface has been decreased by continued micro-meteoroid impact over a long period. One can estimate the age of the lunar surface if the mean particle size is known. Particle sizes can be measured through observations of polarization because the mean particle size is related to the maximum polarization and albedo. The age and the particle size of the lunar regolith can give vital information for the future lunar exploration.
The evaluation of shear modulus (or shear wave velocity) profile of site is very important in the various fields of geotechnical engineering. To obtain shear wave velocity profile, various in-situ seismic methods using surface waves have been developed. These surface wave based in-situ seismic methods have their own strength and weakness. In this study, new seismic site characterization method using the harmonic wavelet analysis of wave (HWAW) was proposed to overcome some of weaknesses in the existing surface wave based seismic site characterization methods. HWAW method which is based on time-frequency analysis using harmonic wavelet transform have been developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves. In order to estimate the applicability of HWAW method, field tests were performed. Through field applications and comparison with other test results, the applicability of the proposed method were verified.
This research introduces an innovative approach for fabricating microstructure surfaces using spray-coating deposition. The resulting surface, referred to as Magnetically Responsive Microstructures (MRM), exhibits hierarchically structured micro-pillar arrays with remarkably high aspect ratios. The fabrication process involves precisely mixing PDMS and hexane with Carbonyl iron powders, followed by ultrasonication and spray-coating on the top of a PDMS substrate placed on the neodymium magnet. The MRM surface shows hydrophobic properties, characterized by a contact angle surpassing 150° and an aspect ratio exceeding 10. Through a comprehensive exploration of critical parameters, including spray amount, magnet-substrate distance, and solution ratio enhanced dynamic tunability and exceptional hydrophobic characteristics are attained. This novel approach holds significant potential for diverse applications in the realm of dynamically tunable microstructures and magnetically responsive surfaces.
Recently, road subsidence has been increasing in urban areas, threatening the safety of citizens. In the lower part of the road, various road facilities such as water supply and drainage pipelines and telecommunication facilities are buried, and the deterioration of the facilities causes the road subsidence. Especially, in the case of old sewer which are attracting attention as a main cause of ground subsidence, the risk of subsidence is calculated indirectly through CCTV exploration. Currently, we are finding cavity through GPR exploration. However, it is difficult to find the sewer back cavity because it is explored from the surface of the road. Thus, the nondestructive cavity exploration techniques was investigated in this study and we confirmed the applicability through experiments on the test-bed. In this study a new quantitative method is proposed to detect the cavity around sewer.

In order to ensure reliable navigation performance of a lunar exploration rover, navigation algorithms using additional sensors such as inertial measurement units and cameras are essential on lunar surface in the absence of a global navigation satellite system. Unprecedentedly, Visual Odometry (VO) using a stereo camera has been successfully implemented at the US Mars rovers. In this paper, we estimate the 6-DOF pose of the lunar exploration rover from gray images of a lunar-like terrains. The proposed algorithm estimates relative pose of consecutive images by sparse image alignment based semi-direct VO. In order to overcome vulnerability to non-linearity of direct VO, we add adaptive motion prior weights calculated from a linear function of the previous pose to the optimization cost function. The proposed algorithm is verified in lunar-like terrain dataset recorded by Toronto University reflecting the characteristics of the actual lunar environment.
The groundwater survey was carried out by electrical resistivity and resistivity tomography using several kinds of electrode array to delineate the depth of the saturated zone and basement complex, the aquifer system of fractured rock, and the 2-D resistivity structure was obtained by inversion technique. And the hole-to-surface and crosshole tomography were applied for two boreholes and the inverted resistivity tomogram are obtained. The comparison of those data with core logging data was performed and those results were relatively well correlated. And it was possible to find out the configuration of basement and the fracture zone and the aquifer system from the 2-D resistivity structure and resistivity tomogram.
