  • Carbon nanotube (CNT) cathodes having a trench structure similar to the structure of the gated triodetype cathode were successfully fabricated by a screenprinting method with multi-walled carbon nanotubes. We observed that a liquid method not only readily removes the organic residues on the CNT films, but also satisfactorily protrudes the CNTs out of the electrode surface. The CNT cathodes prepared by the liquid method showed a turned-on field of $1.4\;V/{\mu}m$. The emission current density of them was about $3.1\;mA/cm^2$ at the electric field of $3\; V/{\mu}m$. The liquid method appears to be a promising surface treatment of CNT cathode for gated triode-type FEDs applications.

  • In order to investigate field emission mechanism of undoped polycrystalline diamond films, diamond films with different structural properties were deposited by varying positive substrate bias and/or $CH_4$ concentration. When increasing $CH_4$ concentration and positive substrate bias voltage, nondiamond carbon content in diamond films increased. Increase of nondiamond carbon content with increasing substrate voltage is ascribed to increase of substrate and excess generation of $CH_n$ radicals. Field emission properties of undoped polycrystalline diamond films ere significantly enhanced with increasing nondiamond carbon content. For diamond films with a small amount of nondiamond carbon, electrons are emitted through diamond surface while for the films with a large amount of nondiamond carbon, electron emission occurs through diamond bulk as well as surface. From this study, depending on nondiamond carbon content two field emission mechanisms were suggested.

  • Using laser ablation technique carbon thin films were deposited on Si(100) substrate as a function of substrate temperature. In this study, the surface morphologic, structural and field emission properties of these carbon thin films were investigated using Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and a diode technique, respectively. With increasing of the substrate temperature, the surface morphologies were changed significantly. Moreover, the intensity of D-band and the full width at half maximum of these bands were dependent on substrate temperatures. As the substrate temperature was increased, the field emission properties were improved. As the result, we find that the field emission properties of the films were changed significantly with the substrate temperature and structural features of carbon than films.

  • Fault detection using optical emission spectra with modified K-means cluster analysis and principal component anal ysis are demonstrated for inductive coupl ed pl asma cl eaning processes. The optical emission spectra from optical emission spectroscopy (OES) are used for measurement. Furthermore, Principal component analysis and K-means cluster analysis algorithm is modified and applied to real-time detection and sensitivity enhancement for fluorocarbon cleaning processes. The proposed techniques show clear improvement of sensitivity and significant noise reduction when they are compared with single wavelength signals measured by OES. These techniques are expected to be applied to various plasma monitoring applications including fault detections as well as chamber cleaning endpoint detection.

  • The effect of silver (Ag) nano-particles on OLEDs was investigated by using a finite difference time domain (FDTD) tool. The proposed OLEDs employed Ag nanoparticles thermally deposited in a high vacuum on a cathode. The emission rate of the exciton was improved by 1.8 fold compared to the conventional OLEDs without Ag nano-particles. Less spacing between the dipole source and the Ag nano-particles resulted in a larger emission rate of the exciton in the OLED with nano-particles. The size of the Ag nano-particles was proportional to the emission rate of the exciton in a range of nano-meter scale of nano-particles. The enhancement of the emission rate of the exciton due to Ag nano-particles caused the improvement in the efficiency of the proposed OLED.

  • Using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), carbon thin film as electron field emitter were fabricated. These carbon thin film were deposited on Si(100) substrate at several RF power. These film were estimated by raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and field emission. The field electron emission property of these carbon thin film was estimated by a diode technique. As the result, we observed that the field emission properties of these films were promoted by higher RF power. These results are explained as change of surface morphology and structural properties of carbon thin film

  • The field emission characteristics of diamond films deposited by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) method were investigated. Diamond films were deposited on n-type Si(100) wafer using various mixtures of hydrogen and methane gas, and the I-V characteristics are measured. We observed that the field emission characteristics depend on the $CH_4$ concentration and the diamond film thickness. All the films show remarkable emission characteristics; low turn-on voltage, high emission current density at lower voltage, uniform stable current density, and good stability and reproducibility. The threshold field for producing a current density of 1mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ is found as low as 7.6V/$\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • Die-sinking electrical discharge machining(EDM) for conductive ceramic matrix composite(CMC) of Tic/$Al_2O_3$ was experienced with addition of ultrasonic emission, and the results were compared with ones obtained by the EDM only. From this experimental study, the values of material removal rate(MRR) and surface roughness($R_{max}$), scanning electron microscope(SEM) micrographs, and weibull probability distribution of bending strength for the specimens were obtained and compared. The trend of MRR was found to be increased slightly with the current and the duty factor for both EDM only and EDM with ultrasonic emission. The MRR values were found to be increased for EDM with ultrasonic emission. The SEM micrographs of EDMed surface by under various operating conditions showed less micro cracks in various places. Although smaller bending strength value was obtained by EDMed surface with ultrasonic emission by weibull probability distribution analysis of bending strength.

  • We have studied the physical properties of X-ray point sources in galaxy clusters for years based on the archival observations using the most sophisticated space X-ray observatory, Chandra X-ray Observatory. Because the ultimate goal of the study is comparing the physical properties of X-ray point sources found in galaxy clusters to those in X-ray blank fields; blank fields are the regions in the sky where any noticeable cosmic diffuse X-ray emission is not observed, an important key issue regarding this study is picking out the point sources related with galaxy clusters. However we do not have red-shift information of all the X-ray point sources. Therefore as a first order approximation we will consider the point sources with smaller projected cluster-centric distance than the adopted size of galaxy clusters. As a first step of this study we perform X-ray surface photometry of ~600 galaxy clusters based on ~800 Chandra ACIS observations. We carefully investigate the radial structures of diffuse X-ray emission in 3 different energy bands. Based on the highly accurate surface photometry we determine the characteristic size of diffuse X-ray emission (i.e., the boundary of X-ray emission). We also investigate the cosmological evolution of this characteristic size of galaxy clusters. General discussion regarding the two dimensional morphology of galaxy clusters will be presented.

  • In this study, the decision of dressing time for diamond wheel was analyzed by observing with acoustic emission signals and surface roughness, and also obtained the machining characteristics by weibull distribution plot for the values of bending strength. From the experimental study, it was possible to predict the time of re-dressing for the diamond grinding wheel with the analysis of acoustic emission signals and surface roughness values, and following conclusions were obtained. The root-mem-square values of acoustic emission signals were obtained low as the increased of table speed for different abrasive grain size. This is caused by the lack of grinding power which is not able to get rid of all real grinding mass of depth as the table speed is increased. The values of bending strength for ground $Si_3 N_4$ specimens were decreased for gain size of #400 than that of #60, but it was found that the surface roughness values for gain size of #60 were better than that of #400. As compared the shape parameter of weibull distribution plot for the values of bending strength, it was found that the reliability of bending strength for grain size of #60 increased than that of #400.
