  • In order to determine the mechanical behavior of the curved laminates in practical applications, three right-angled composite brackets with different lay-ups were investigated both experimentally and numerically. In the experimental, quasi-static tests on both unidirectional and multidirectional curved composite brackets were conducted to study the progressive failure and failure modes of the curved laminates. In the numerical modeling, three-dimensional finite element analysis was used to simulate the mechanical behavior of the laminates. Here, a strength-based failure criterion, namely the Ye criterion, was used to predict the delamination failure in the composite curved laminates. The mechanical responses of the laminate subjected to off-axis tensile loading were analyzed, which include the progressive failure, the failure locations, the load-displacement relationships, the load-strain relationships, and the stress distribution around the curved region of the angled bracket. Subsequently, the effects of stacking sequence and thickness on the load carrying capacity and the stiffness of the laminates were discussed in detail. Through the experimental observation and analysis, it was found that the failure mode of all the specimens is delamination, which is initiated abruptly and develops unstably on the symmetric plane, close to the inner surface, and about $29^{\circ}$ along the circumferential direction. It was also found that the stacking sequence and the thickness have significant influences on both the load carrying capacity and the stiffness of the laminates. However, the thickness effect is less than that on the curved aluminum plate.

  • The low actuation voltage and quick bending response of IPMC(ion-exchange polymer metal composite) are considered attractive for the construction of various types of actuators. In this study, in order to develop a new type actuators by using the IPMC platinum electrode of IPMC are fabricated by using electroless impregnation-reduction method plating. As the platinum-plating times are increased, IPMC performance was improved in terms of bending displacement and force due to the enhanced surface conductivity. In addition, we investigated the basic actuation characteristics of resonance frequency and actuator length as well as the effect of water uptake and ion mobility. Using the classical laminate theory(CLT), a modeling methodology was developed to predict the deformation, bending moment, and residual stress distribution of anisotropic IPMC thin plates. In this modeling methodology, the internal stress evolved by the unsymmetric distribution of water inside IPMC was quantitatively calculated and subsequently the bending moment and the curvature were estimated for various geometry of IPMC actuator.

  • The frost heave process from repeated freezing and thawing actions in winter on forest road cut-slopes is important for forest road maintenance and management. This study investigated the damages of the forest heave process on forest road cut-slopes by measuring the changes in the road-cut surface elevation and sediment production and by conducting vegetation surveys which were aimed at providing information for forest road maintenance plans. The temperature and humidity differences were determined between the north and south cut-slopes. T-test showed that the north slope had a lower temperature and humidity than that of the south slope. Field observations also confirmed frozen soils on the north slopes, indicating that the north slopes are susceptible to frost heave. Sediment was converted to dry weight per unit area ($g/m^2$). T-test showed that the north slope produced more sediment than that of the south slope. The study confirmed that more frost heave occurred on the north cut-slopes than on the south cut-slopes. Vegetation surveys were conducted on five cut-slope plots. Considering the dominant species found above the cut-slopes, vegetations in all the plots are expected to succeed to pine and oak in the future. The dominant species appearing on the cut-slopes of the study area were exotic species because the elapsed time of the site was only 2 - 4 years.

  • This paper describes a fiber optic sensor suitable for non-contact detection of ultrasonic waves. This sensor is based on a fiber optic Sagnac interferometer. Quadrature phase bias between two interfering laser beams in Sagnac loop is introduced by a polarization controller. A stable quadrature phase bias can be confirmed by observing the interferometer output versus phase bias. This method eliminates a digital signal processing for detection of ultrasonic waves using Sagnac interferometer. Interference intensity is affected by the frequency of ultrasonic waves and the time delay of Sagnac loop. Collimator is attached to the end of the probing fiber to focus the light beam onto the specimen surface and to collect the reflected light back into the fiber probe. Ultrasonic waves produced by conventional ultrasonic transducers are detected. This fiber optic sensor based on Sagnac interferometer is very effective for detection of small displacement with high frequency such as ultrasonic waves used in conventional non-destructive testing.

  • The first lesion in neural tissue produced by electrical currents were made in the 19th century by workers using direct current. In 1953, Sweet and Mark clearly demonstrated that DC lesions have unpredictable and ragged borders and may vary in size. They, as well as Hunsperger and Wyss, suggested that the use of high frequency currents might provide improved results and were proved correct. However, $Bovie^{(R)}$ electrosurgical unit may also be used in percutaneous medial branch neurotomy if a lesion made at a point or the dorsal surface of the transverse process just caudal to the most medial end of the superior edge of the transverse process (Bogduk's method). At this point the medial branch lies on the bone and its depth and medial displacement are defined by the bone which precludes the need for lateral radiographs to check placement. A lesion was made at same target point using the $Bovie^{(R)}$ electrosurgical unit in a 41 year male patient who had received a Kaneda operation because of L2 compression fracture. The patient was relieved of pain without any adverse effects.

  • This research was a technical case study for the authentic restoration of the seven-storied Simgoksa stone pagoda after disassembly and reconstruction using three-dimensional image analysis. During disassembly and reconstruction, the pagoda's properties were analyzed in terms of the overall modification and displacement of the pagoda. Distortion was minimized by ensuring structural stability during the reconstruction process. Also, the original site of the pagoda was examined in order to utilize it fully during rebuilding. Before reconstruction of the pagoda, moss and lichen on the stone surfaces were removed by scientific surface cleaning. The foundation of the pagoda was reinforced with rammed earth than was similar to the original foundation using a mixture of soil and quicklime. The results are expected to provide valuable data for the reconstruction of other stone pagodas.

  • Since heat curing acrylic resins undergo unavoidable dimensional changes following polymerization, adaptation can be altered. Until recently, although numerous studies on the dimensional changes of denture base were based on a microscopic technic that measures the relative displacement of a limited reference points on the denture base, but there have been few studies on the distortions of resins using holographic interferometry. Purpose of this study was to determine and compare the dimensional changes and fringe patterns of 4 heat curing acrylic resins, and observe the distortions of acrylic resin denture base by temperature change with the aid of the holographic interferometry. Holographic interferograms were taken on the resin specimens and acrylic resin denture base with the 10mW He-Ne laser and double exposure method. Comparison and analysis of fringe pattern on the recorded object surface was performed. The following results were obtained. 1. The dimensional changes for the high impact resin Lucitone 199 were statistically the greatest of all resins, and the rapid heat curing resin Premium super 20 were the least. 2. The most polymerization shrinkage of all materials occured in initial period of measurements, at this time the difference of polymerization shrinkage properties between resins was founded. 3. The stress distribution of specimens was seen by various type of fringe pattern which had directionality. 4. The polymerization shrinkage of resins was greatly influenced by temperature change. 5. The partial deformations of resin denture base were observed in 70 C and 90 C water.

  • Al2O3/Al composites were produced by immersing the sintered silica preform in molten aluminum which contained magnesium as impurity. Three distinct regions existed in the penetration behavior of molten me-tal with changing the reaction temperature. These regions are denoted as low temperature regime(75$0^{\circ}C$-85$0^{\circ}C$) intermediate regime(90$0^{\circ}C$-95$0^{\circ}C$) and high temperature regime(100$0^{\circ}C$$\leq$) In the low temperature regime the penetration speed of molten aluminum increased with increasing reaction temperature whereas it decreased in the intermediate regime due to the phase transition of alumina formed by displacement reac-tion. In the high temperature regime the penetration speed of molten aluminum was the highest at 100$0^{\circ}C$ which was 3.6 mm/hr But above 105$0^{\circ}C$ molten aluminum did not penetrate into the silica preform because of the formation of a dense spinel layer at the preform surface by magnesium in molten Al.

  • In this study, a total of 12 types of sequential model tests were conducted at the laboratory for small scale anchored walls. The sequential behavior for flexible wall embedded in sand was investigated by varying degrees of relative density of Joomoonjin sand and flexibility number of model wall. The model tests were carried out in a 1000mm width, 1500mm length, and 1000mm high steel box. Load cells, pressure cells, displacement transducer and dial gauges were used to measure the anchor forces, lateral wall deflections, lateral earth pressures and vertical displacements of ground surface, respectively. Limited model tests were performed to examine the parameters for soil-wall interaction model and the formulation of analytical method was revised in order to predict the behavior of anchored wall in sand. Based on the model tests and proposed analytical method, model simulations were performed and the predictions by the present approach were compared with measurements by the model tests and predictions by other commercial programs. It is shown that the prediction by the present approach simulates qualitatively well the general trend observed for model test.

  • In this paper, an approximate optimization program based on GUI(graphic user interface) environment is developed. This program is coded by using Fortran and Visual basic. Fortran is used to Progress approximate optimization process. Visual basic is used to make user environment for user to use conveniently. Inside of this program, it uses two independent programs. One is commercial program, ANSYS, and the other is optimization program, PLBA(Pshenichny-Lim-Belegundu Arora). The former is used to obtain approximate equation of stress and displacement of a structure. The latter is used to solve approximate optimization. This algorithm uses second-order information of a function and active set strategy. This program is connecting ANSYS and PLBA. And it progress the process repeatedly until it obtain optimum value. As a method of approximate optimization, sequential design domain(SDD) is introduced. SDD starts with a certain range which is offseted from midpoint of an initial design domain and then SDD of the next step is determined by optimal point of a prior step.
