Measurement of Surface Strain on Soft Biological Tissues Using Irregular Grid Pattern (불규칙적인 격자망을 이용한 생체 연조직의 곡면변형률 측정)

  • In this study, an automatic surface-strain measurement system called "ASIAS-bio" has been developed. This system can be used even in cases in which it is very difficult to apply a regular grid pattern necessary for measuring surface-strain, such as curved or uneven surfaces; surfaces damaged by corrosion or contamination; or soft materials such as rubber, foam, and biological tissues. This system works independently of the measurement conditions including the material and its surface condition, grid pattern and size, grid marking method, and degree of deformation. A comparison between the strain distributions of the sheet metal parts measured by using this system and those obtained by a commercial system showed that this system was sufficiently reliable. In addition, the deformation of the swine joint capsule and human knee skin was measured by using this system to demonstrate its usefulness.

  • Recently, the technology of surface treatment is being more important which affects the material cost reduction and substitution to the expensive material. The material used for the mechanical processing should have not only high intensity, but also strength toughness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. In order to increase the durability and have better quality of the parts using such kind of tooling material, various kinds of research of the surface hardening through many kinds of heat resources is being done and practically applied. In this study, the characteristics of hardening surface zone for high strength of the press die material through laser beam irradiation are researched. In this study, it is experimentally observed by the status of the surface morphology, tensile strength, the hardness distribution of the base metal and wear condition by the surface hardness pattern by the laser beam based on the process parameters of $CO_2$ laser by using SM45C and STD11 used for press tool. Through this research, the characteristics of surface hardened zone for high strength of the thin metal by laser beam irradiation is done.

A STUDY ON CORROSION BEHAVIOR OF DENTAL AMALGAMS AS A FUNCTION OF TIME (시간경과에 따른 아말감의 부식거동에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to observe in vitro chloride corrosion behavior from 5 kinds of amalgam (Caulk spheracal, Amalcap, Dispersalloy, Tytin, Sybralloy) as a function of time after tritruration by using potentiostat. After each amalgam alloy and Hg was triturated as the direction of the manufacturer by the mechanical amalgamator, the triturated mass was inserted the cyrindrical matal mold ($12{\times}10mm$) and was condensed by using routine manner. The specimen was removed from the mold and was stored at room temperature for 1 week, 1 month and 3 months, and standard surface preparation was routine carried out. The 0.9% saline solution was used as electrolyte in pH 6.8~7.0 at $30{\pm}0.5.^{\circ}C$. The open circuit potential was determined after 30 minutes' immersion of 1 week, 1 month and 3 month old specimens. The scan rate was 1 mV/sec and the surface area of amalgam exposed to the solution was $0.65\;Cm^2$ for each specimen. All potentials reported are with respect to a silver / silver chloride electrode (SSE). The following result was obtained. 1. All amalgam specimens became more noble corrosion potentials which represent the improved corrosion resistance as the time elapsed. 2. Three kinds of high copper amalgam always exhibited more noble potential than low copper amalgam at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months. 3. Two kinds of low copper amalgam had the similar polarization curve pattern with 3 current peaks at each time period and current densities associated with these peaks were decreased as aging especially in caulk spherical amalgam. 4. All kinds of high copper amalgam had the similar polarization curve pattern with absence of prominent current peak at each time period, but the polarization curve of D amalgam had one apparent current peak at 1 week.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the anodic polarization curve from 4 kinds of low copper amalgam (Fine cut alloy, Spheralloy, Aristalloy and Amalcap) and 4 kinds of high copper amalgam (Dispersalloy, Sybraloy Orosphere and Tytin) obtained by using the potentiostat. The specimen made as the direction of manufacturer was stored at room temperature for about 7 days. The standard surface preparation was routinely carried out. The 0.9% saline solution was used as electrolyte in pH 6.8-7.0 at $37^{\circ}C$. The open circuit potential was determined after 30 minutes' immersion of specimen. The scan rate was 1mV/sec and the surface area of amalgam exposed to the solution was 0.785$cm^2$ for each specimen. All potentials reported are with respect to Ag/AgCl eelctrode. The following results were obtained. 1. The corrosion potential of high copper amalgams was higher than one of low copper amalgams, and the current density of high copper amalgam was lower than one of low copper amalgams. 2. The low copper amalgams had the similar pattern of polarization curve, but the high copper amalgams had the different pattern one another. 3. The polarization curve of Orosphere amalgam which is the admixed type was similar to one of low copper amalgam.

Effect of Filament Winding Methods on Surface Roughness and Fiber Volume Fraction of SiCf/SiC Composite Tubes (SiCf/SiC 복합체 튜브의 표면조도 및 섬유 부피 분율에 미치는 필라멘트 와인딩 방법의 영향)

  • Silicon carbide and its composites are being considered as a nuclear fuel cladding material for LWR nuclear reactors because they have a low neutron absorption cross section, low hydrogen production under accident conditions, and high strength at high temperatures. The SiC composite cladding tube considered in this study consists of three layers, monolith CVD SiC - $SiC_f$/SiC composite -monolith CVD SiC. The volume fraction of SiC fiber and surface roughness of the composite layer affect mechanical and corrosion properties of the cladding tube. In this study, various types of SiC fiber preforms with tubular shapes were fabricated by a filament winding method using two types of Tyranno SA3 grade SiC fibers with 800 filaments/yarn and 1600 filaments/yarn. After chemical vapor infiltration of the SiC matrix, the surface roughness and fiber volume fraction were measured. As filament counts were changed from 800 to 1600, the surface roughness increased but the fiber volume fraction decreased. The $SiC_f$/SiC composite with a bamboo-like winding pattern has a smaller surface roughness and a higher fiber volume fraction than that with a zigzag winding pattern.

Effects of Sweat on the Metal Frames of Eyeglasses (땀이 금속안경테에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: In this paper, the changes in eyeglasses frames were investigated when the frames were exposed to artificial sweat. Methods: The changes in surface, hardness, and tensile strength of eyeglasses frames made of nickel silver, Monel, and titanium were tested after the exposure to the artificial sweat of pH 6.5, 6.0, and 5.0, during 1, 3, and 6 week(s), for each. Results: Corrosion pattern of eyeglasses frames made of nickel silver, Monel, and titanium was induced by artificial sweat, and the patterns were different from another frame materials. In proportion to the pH of artificial sweat and exposure time to artificial sweat, hardness of all frames made of three different material decreased, however, tensile strength of the three frames was not changed. Conclusions: The necessity of routine management for eyeglasses frames can be suggested since the changes in surface corrosion and hardness of eyeglasses frames induced by sweat were shown.

  • The purpose of this paper is to find out quantitatively the relationship between the surface shape and the mechanical properties of corroded reinforcement. Three-dimensional measurements were carried out on the surface shape of variously corroded reinforcements and parameters expressing the characteristics of the shape, which included the maximum decrement of sectional area of reinforcement, its distribution along the axis. It was investigated that which parameters could correspond to the mechanical properties of corroded reinforcement and it was confirmed that the maximum decrement of sectional area of reinforcement could express the mechanical properties most appropriately. Finally, this paper proposes a constitutive model of corroded reinforcement for analyzing the structural behavior of reinforced concrete structures considering the localized corrosion of by finite element method.

  • Multi-nozzle spray painting procedure of the inorganic zinc shop primer was established in order to obtain uniform film thickness. The shop primer paint prevents the corrosion of steel block during shipbuilding. When the dry film thickness of shop primer is insufficient, rust will be generated on the steel block. Otherwise, thick coating of shop primer may be a problem of weld defect. So, it is important to obtain the uniform film thickness of shop primer. The uniformity of dry film thickness is affected by spray speed, distance from spray gun to target surface and overlapping span of spray path. In order to uniformly maintain coating thickness of shop primer, the coating procedure was established based on the correlation of shop primer spray variables.

  • This study proposes the integrity evaluation of the bogie frame using ultrasonic fractography analysis. Analysis objectives in this study are to investigate fracture planes of damaged zone by the A-scan method. The surface condition of fracture planes shows degree of degradation by the stress concentration. The detection of the natural defects in the bogie frame is performed using the characteristics of echodynamic pattern in ultrasonic signal. Results of ultrasonic testing agree fairly well with those of actual fracture plane. In quantitative fractography analysis, microstructures of actual fracture plane turned out to be intergranular and transgranular fracture. Proposed ultrasonic fractography analysis in this study can be used for the integrity evaluation of the bogie frame.

Conservation of gilt bronze locks (Treasure No. 1141) excavated from Hancheonsa temple (보물 제1141호 한천사 출토 금동자물쇠 보존처리)

  • Gilt bronze locks(Treasure No. 1141) excavated from Hancheonsa temple are artifacts of Goryeo Dynasty. The locks underwent a conservation process from October 2001 to July 2002. The process included cleaning and the application of corrosion inhibitors, Benzotriazolesolution, as well as reinforcement treatment with Paraloid NAD-10 solution,an acrylic resin. Non-destructive XRF analysis unveil that the artifacts are made of an alloy of copper(Cu), tin(Sn) and lead(Pb), but the gilt layer is too thin to analyze the purity of the gold or the exact production method. Gilt bronze locks are important materials because they preserve all the structures of locks in Goryeo Dynasty to the smallest detail. The surface pattern is revealed through the conservation process and components of the alloy through material analysis.
