A milling process with 45 degree chamfered inserts produces a perfect flat surface only in theory. It is due to many unwanted factors including thermal effect, dynamic effect, the problem of the controller used and the problem of accuracy of the machine tool. In this study, introduced is a method to improve the surface roughness by redesigning of the chamfer angle of the insert, which traditionally has been 45 degree. First, the relationship between the fixed machine coordinate and the relative coordinate on the insert is derived. This transfer matrix is used to determine the new insert angle to maximize the flatness of the machined surface. A newly designed insert is manufactured, and used to carry out the experiment. It is proved that the insert designed by the proposed method produced a much flatter surface than a traditional one.

In this study, the effect of cutting edge geometry, such as helix and rake angles, on surface roughness in ball-end milling is investigated by using the Taguchi method. A set of experiments adopting the $L_{27}(3^{13})$ design with an orthogonal array are conducted with special WC ball-end mills having different helix and rake angles. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is performed to analyze the effects of tool geometry and machining parameters, such as cutting speed, feed per tooth, and depth of cut, on surface roughness. The ANOVA results reveal that helix and rake angles are critical factors affecting surface roughness; the interaction of helix angle and cutting speed is also important. This research can contribute to novel cutting edge designs of ball-end mills and optimization of cutting parameters.

Molecular dynamic simulations were performed to examine the wetting behavior of a graphite surface textured with nanoscale pillars. The contact angle of a water droplet on parallelepiped or dome-shaped pillars was investigated by systematically varying the height and width of the pillar and the spacing between pillars. An optimal inter-pillar spacing that gives the highest contact angle was found. The droplet on the dome-covered surface was determined to be more mobile than that on the surface covered with parallelepiped pillars.

We investigated the variation in contact angle of a nano-sized water droplet on a nano stripe-patterned surface using molecular dynamics simulation. By changing the height and width of the stripe pillar, and the gap width of the stripes, we observed the contact angle of water droplet in equilibrium. When the surface energies were 0.1 and 0.3 kcal/mol, the calculated contact angles were in good agreement with the Cassie and Baxter equation. However, when the surface energy is 0.5 kcal/mol, the contact angles are observed to be perturbed along the Cassie and Baxter equation.
In order to analysis the degradation process of epoxy/glass fiber for outdoor condition, FRP laminate was exposed to high temperature and water. Then the degradation process was evaluated by comparing contact angle, surface potential decay, and surface resistivity. For the change of wettability, the contact angle of thermal-treated specimen with the high temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ increased. But that of water-treated specimen decreased. The characteristic of surface potential decay shows the tendency of the remarkable decrease on water-treated specimens, but increase on thermal-treated specimen compared with untreated one. Also, for the surface resistivity, it shows the same trend compared with the change of contact angle.

Measurements of the local heat transfer coefficients were made on a hemispherically convex surface with a round oblique impinging jet. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation on the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystal for the surface temperature measurements. The Reynolds number used was 23000 and the nozzle-to-surface distance was L/d=2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 and the jet angle was $\alpha$=$0^{\circ}\; 15^{\circ}\;30^{\circ}C\; and \;40^{\circ}C$. In the experiment, the Nusselt number at the stagnation point decreases as the jet angle increases and has the maximum value for L/d=6. The X-axis Nusselt number distributions exhibit Secondary maxima at $0^{\circ}C\re $\alpha$\re 15^{\circ}C, L/d\le6$ for X/d<0(upstream) and at $0^{\circ}C\re $\alpha$40^{\circ}C,\;L/d\le4\;and\; at\; 30^{\circ}C\re $\alpha$$\leq$40^{\circ}C,\;L/d\le 6 $for X/d>0(downstream). The secondary maxima occurs at long distance from the stagnation point as the jet angle increases or the nozzle-to-surface distance decreases. The Y-axis Nusselt number distributions exhibit secondary maxima at Y/d=$\pm$2 for $0^{\circ}C\le a\le30^{\circ}C\; and\; L/d\le4, and \;for\;$\alpha$=40^{\circ}C$and L/d=2. The displacement of the maximum Nusselt number from the stagnation point increases as the jet angle increases or the nozzle-to-surface distance decreases and the maximum distance is about 0.67 times of the nozzle diameter. The ratio of the maximum Nusselt number to the stagnation Nusselt number increases as the jet angle increases.
Background: The serratus anterior is one of the most important muscle for maintaining good scapular alignment in the shoulder joint. The pectoralis major and upper trapezius may also compensate for weak serratus anterior muscles. The push-up plus exercise has been identified as the optimal exercise for maximum activation of the serratus anterior. Objects: The purpose of this study was to examine differences in surface electromyography (EMG) activity of upper trapezius, pectoralis major, and serratus anterior muscles during push-up plus exercises on variously angled surfaces in subjects with winged scapula. Methods: Sixteen subjects with winged scapula (male=5, female=11) volunteered for this study. The subjects performed push-up plus exercise on four different tilt angles, namely $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$. EMG activities in the serratus anterior, upper trapezius, and pectoralis major muscles during performance of push-up plus exercise were measured in all subjects. Data were processed from repeated measures one-way analysis of variance. Results: There was significant difference in the muscle activity of the serratus anterior on the different surface angles (p<.05). The results of the post-hoc analysis showed significantly greater serratus anterior muscle activity on a surface at a $0^{\circ}$ angle than at others tilt angles (p<.05). There was also significant difference in the ratio of serratus anterior to upper trapezius and serratus anterior to pectoralis major across the four surfaces (p<.05), and post-hoc analysis showed significantly greater values on the $0^{\circ}$ surface than on other tilts (p<.05). Conclusion: This study found that performing push-up plus exercises on a flat surface with $0^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ tilt angle achieves high activation of the serratus anterior muscle for selective strengthening. It can also take into account the sequential application, which is first performed at a $30^{\circ}$ and at a $0^{\circ}$ tilt angle for and effective but not excessive muscle activation.

Measurements of the local heat transfer coefficients on hemispherical convex and concave surfaces with a turbulent impinging jet were made. The Reynolds number used was 11000, 23000, 50000 and the nozzle- to- surface distance was L/d=2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 and the jet angle was a = $0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $40^{\circ}$. In case of concave surface, the Nusselt number at the stagnation point decreases as the jet angle increases and has the maximum value for L/d=6. The X-axis Nusselt number distributions exhibit secondary maxima at $0^{\circ}$$\leq$ a $\leq$$15^{\circ}$, L/d $\leq$ 4 for X/d<0(upstream) and at $0^{\circ}$$\leq$ a $\leq$$40^{\circ}$, L/d $\leq$ 4 and at $30^{\circ}$$\leq$ a $\leq$$40^{\circ}$, 4 < L/d $\leq$ 6 for X/d<0(downstream). The secondary maximum occurs at long distance from the stagnation point as the jet angle increases or the nozzle-to-surface distance decreases. In case of convex, correlations of the stagnation point Nusselt number according to Reynolds number, jet-to-surface distance ratio and dimensionless surface angle are presented. In the stagnation point, in term of Ren, n ranges from 0.43 in case of 2 $\leq$ L/d $\leq$ 6 to 0.45 in case of 6 < L/d $\leq$ 10, there agrees roughly appears to be laminar boundary layer result. The maximum Nusselt number, in this experiment, occurred in the direction of upstream. The displacement of the maximum Nusselt number from the stagnation point increases with increasing surface angle or decreasing nozzle-to-surface distance. On this condition about surface curvature D/d=10, the maximum displacement is about 0.7 times of the jet nozzle diameter. The ratio of the maximum Nusselt number to the stagnation Nusselt number increases as the jet angle increases.

The hexagonal network-type PDMS microstructures were fabricated and they were employed to low-friction drag surfaces. While the lowest contact angle measured from the smooth surface was $108^{\circ}$ the highest contact angle measured from the microstructured surfaces was $145^{\circ}$ The moving speed of bullet-type capsule attached with a PDMS pad of smooth surface ($CA=108^{\circ}$) was 0.1261 m/s and that with a PDMS pad of microstructured surface ($CA=145^{\circ}$) was 0.1464 m/s. Compared with the smooth surface, the microstructured surface showed 16.1% higher moving speed. The network-type microstructures have a composite surface that is composed with air and PDMS solid. Therefore, the surface does not wet: rather water is lifted by the microstructures. Because of the composite surface, water shows slip-flow on the microstructures, and thus friction drag can be reduced.
We investigated the annealing effect on generating pretilt angle and aligning liquid crystal (LC) using the photo-depolymerization reaction in this study. In case of rubbing polyimide (PI) surface with the side chain, pretilt angle tends to increase with increasing the annealing time. It is considered because the steric interaction is increased by annealing which cause the side chain to come back to original position. For obliquely irradiating ultraviolet (UV) light on PI surface, pretilt angle shows to $0^{\circ}$ and is increased by annealing. The pretilt angle in rubbed PI surface is much higher than in photo-aligned PI surface. It is attributed to the steric interaction and the number of LC molecular arrangement on azimuthal direction. In addition. in case of obliquely irradiating UV light on PI surface. it showed LC alignment to increase by annealing. It can be regarded due to the fact that the re-alignment of LC molecule is improved to residual polymer direction by annealing.
