With the advent of submarine detection technology using low-frequency active sonar there is a call for a new submarine stealth device that can replace the existing passive anechoic tiles. Proposed in this study is a low-frequency echo reduction technique based on active impedance matching, which employs a tile projector designed to cover a wide area such as the surface of a ship. To judge the feasibility of the active impedance matching technique finite-element simulations of low-frequency echo reduction are performed. Based on the analysis, a tile projector is designed, fabricated, and tested in an acoustic tank for its low-frequency echo reduction performance.

Using a surface modification technique, ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) of Ti thin film it becomes possible to prepare an active ceramic surface to braze $Al_2O_3$-STS304 with conventional Ag-Cu eutectic composition filler metal. Researches on bonding formations at interfaces of ceramic joints were mainly related on the development of filler metals to ceramic, the process parameters, and clarifications of reaction products. From the results, the reactive brazing is a very convenient technique compared to the conventional Mn-Mo method. However melting point of reactive filler is still higher than that of Ag-Cu eutectic and it forms the brittle inter metallic compound. Recently several new approaches are introduced to overcome the main shortcomings of the reactive metal brazing in ceramic-metal, metal vapor vacuum arc ion source was introduced to implant the reactive element directly into the ceramics surface, and sputter deposition with sputter etching for the deposition of active material.

The vertical distributions of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, chlorophyll, and primary production were investigated within the top 200m water depth in the south Pacific Ocean in February,2000. The study area ($24^{\circ}-41^{\circ}S,\;81^{\circ}-168^{\circ}W$) can be hydrologically divided into two regions. Upwelling was actively occurring in the eastern region of the $110^{\circ}S$ line, meanwhile it was not active in the western region. Accordingly, chemical properties in the surface waters were different between the two regions; nitrate+nitrite and phosphate concentrations were much higher in the eastern region than in the western region due to the active upwelling, but silicate concentration was higher in the western region. Among the nutrients, the major element influencing primary production was also different between the two regions; silicon would be a major element influencing primary production in the eastern region, but nitrogen may act as a major element for primary production in the western region. Primary production showed similar values in the two regions in spite of the large differences of nutrient concentrations in the surface waters, but the total chlorophyll integrated within the 200 m water depth was almost twice as much as in the western region than that in the eastern legion.
This study investigated the behaviour of sulfur species after the early diegenetic reduction of sulfate from pore solution in an anoxic intertidal flat deposit in the Banweol area of Kyeong-gi Bay, west coast of Korea. A total of seven sediment cores were collected during 1990∼1992 and were analyzed for their solid-phase sulfur species (acid-volatile sulfur, element sulfur, pyrite sulfur) as well as for chemical components in the pore solution, such as sulfate, ammonium, hydrogen sulfide, phosphate and Fe ion. The pore water sulfate oncentration was found to decrease rapidly downward from the sediment surface, while that of hydrogen sulfide, ammonium and phosphate showed and increase. The dissolved iron concentration in pore water, on the other hand, was found high in the surface layer of sediment, but fell sharply below this layer. these characteristic profiles of pore water sulfide and iron concentrations suggest that some reaction occurs between dissolved iron and sulfide ions, leading to the formation of various sulfide minerals in the sedimentary phase. The amount of inorganic sulfur species in the sediment increased downward, and showed a maximum of up to 7.9 mg/g. among the three species analyzed, acid-volatile sulfur (AVS) was dominant comprising more than 50% of the total. The amount of pyrite sulfur was greater than that of element sulfur. This implies that the formation of pyrite was restricted in this environment. the limited amount of element sulfur in this deposit may have discouraged the active formation of pyrite.

The guided wave technique is commonly used in structural health monitoring as the guided waves can propagate far in the structures without much energy loss. The guided waves are conventionally generated by the surface-mounted piezoelectric wafer active sensor (PWAS). However, there is still lack of understanding of the wave propagation in layered structures, especially in structures made of anisotropic materials such as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. In this paper, the Rayleigh-Lamb wave strain tuning curves in a PWAS-mounted unidirectional CFRP plate are analytically derived using the normal mode expansion (NME) method. The excitation frequency spectrum is then multiplied by the tuning curves to calculate the frequency response spectrum. The corresponding time domain responses are obtained through the inverse Fourier transform. The theoretical calculations are validated through finite element analysis and an experimental study. The PWAS responses under the free, debonded and bonded CFRP conditions are investigated and compared. The results demonstrate that the amplitude and travelling time of wave packet can be used to evaluate the CFRP bonding conditions. The method can work on a baseline-free manner.

Shape memory alloys (SMA) are often used in smart structures as active components. Their ability to provide large recovery forces and displacements has been useful in many applications, including devices for artificial muscles, active structural acoustic control, and shape control. Based on the 3-dimensional SMA constitutive equation in this paper, the radial displacement control of externally pressurized circular and semicircular composite cylinders under external pressure with a thin SMA layer bonded on its inner surface or inserted between composite layers in investigated using 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Upon actuation through resistive heating, SMAs start to transform from martensitic into austenitic state, simultaneously recover the prestrain, and thus cause the composite cylinders to go back to their original shapes of the cylinder cross-sections.
This study investigated propagation characteristics of piezo-activated guided waves in an aluminium rectangular-section tube for the purpose of damage identification. Changes in propagating velocity and amplitude of the first wave packet in acquired signals were observed in the frequency range from 50 to 250 kHz. The difference in guided wave propagation between rectangular- and circular-section tubes was examined using finite element simulation, demonstrating a great challenge in interpretation of guided wave signals in rectangular-section tubes. An active sensor network, consisting of nine PZT elements bonded on different surfaces of the tube, was configured to collect the wave signals scattered from through-thickness holes of different diameters. It was found that guided waves were capable of propagating across the sharp tube curvatures while retaining sensitivity to damage, even that not located on the surfaces where actuators/sensors were attached. Signal correlation between the intact and damaged structures was evaluated with the assistance of a concept of digital damage fingerprints (DDFs). The probability of the presence of damage on the unfolded tube surface was thus obtained, by which means the position of damage was identified with good accuracy.

Most metals are polycrystalline material whose deformation is dominated by the slip system. During the deformation process, orientation of slip systems is rearranged with preferred orientations, leading to deformation-induced crystallographic texture which is called deformation texture. Depending on the texture development, the property of material can be changed. The rate-independent crystal plasticity which is based on the Schmid law as a yield function causes a non-uniqueness in the choice of active slip systems. In this work, to avoid the slip system ambiguity problem, rate-independent crystal plasticity model based on the smooth yield surface with rounded-off corners is adopted. In order to simulate the polycrystalline material under plastic deformation, we employ the Taylor model of polycrystal behavior that all the grains are assumed to be subjected to the macroscopic velocity gradient. Rigid-plastic finite element program based on this rate-independent crystal plasticity is developed to predict the grain-level deformation behavior of FCC metals during metal forming processes. In the finite element calculation, one integration point is considered as a crystalline aggregate which has a number of crystals. Macroscopic behavior of material can be deduced from the behavior of aggregates. As applications, the extrusion processes are simulated and the changes of mechanical properties are predicted.
The conduction cooling HTS SMES magnet is operated in cryogenic temperature. The insulation design at cryogenic temperature is an important element that should be established to accomplish miniaturization that is a big advantage of HTS SMES. However, the behaviors of insulators for cryogenic conditions in air or vacuum are virtually unknown. Therefore, we need active research and development of insulation concerning application of the conduction cooling HTS SMES. Specially, this paper was studied about high vacuum and cryogenic temperature breakdown and flashover discharge characteristics between cryocooler and magnet-coil. The breakdown and surface flashover discharge characteristics were experimented at cryogenic temperature and vacuum. Also, we were experimented about mechanical properties of 4-point bending test. From the results, we confirmed that about research between cryocooler and magnet-coil established basic data in the insulation design.

Ceramic femoral heads are now widely used in Total Hip Replacement (THR). Due to their high biocompatibility and low ductility, ceramic femoral heads are considered to be suitable for young and active patients. However, as in testing the mechanical stability of the femoral head, the conventional proof test (standard ISO 7206-10) has its limit of showing axisymmetric stress distribution on the contact surface, while non-uniformed stress distribution is expected after THR. Since non-uniformed stress distribution can result in the increased probability of ceramic femoral head fracture, it is considerable to evaluate the stress distribution in vivo-like conditions. Therefore, this study simulated the ceramic femoral heads under in vivo-like conditions using finite element method. The maximum stress decreased when increasing the size of the femoral head and stress distribution was concentrated on superior contact surface of the taper region.
