  • In this study, the magnitude and phase variation of dynamic earth pressure acting on a pile in liquefiable soils were analyzed using a series of 1g shaking table tests. In the case of a pile in dry sand, the value of the dynamic earth pressure was the highest near the surface due to the inertia force of the upper load on the pile and it decreased as the depth of the pile got lower. On the other hand, for a pile in liquefiable sand, the magnitude and shape of the dynamic earth pressure were similar to those of the excess pore pressure and was largely affected by the deformation of soils. Furthermore, the inertia force of the upper load and the dynamic earth pressure acted in opposite directions in cases of dry sand and saturated sand where low excess pore pressure had developed. However, after liquefaction, those force components near surface acted unfavorably in the same direction. Finally, the Westergaard’s solution was modified and proposed as a method to evaluate the magnitude of dynamic earth pressure acting on a pile during liquefaction.

  • In this paper, the contact stress and strain distributions in elastomer O-ring seals have been analyzed using a non-linear finite element method. The stress behavior of PTFE materials is assumed as Odgen model because the sealing clearance between the flange and the surface of the O-ring is not small and the sealing pressure of working fluids covers from the atmospheric pressure to high pressure of 15MPa. The contact normal force and stress in wavy O-rings in which is developed for this analysis are uniformly distributed along the flange and the wall of the rectangular groove. And the normal sealing forces are also kept high compared to other contact sealing models such as the conventional O-ring and X-ring, Thus, the FEM computed results indicate that the sealing characteristic of wavy O-rings is food compared with other contact seals.

  • Impact on cylindrical surface caused by plunging breaking waves is investigated experimentally. The breaking waves are generated in a wave flume by decreasing the wave maker frequencies linearly and focusing the generated wave components at one specific location. The breaking wave packets are based on constant wave steepness spectrum. Three inclination angles of cylinder are applied to examine the effect of contact angle between cylinder and front surface of breaking waves. Also, the effect of cylinder diameter on pressure distribution and its peak value is investigated by adopting three cylinders with different diameters. The longitudinal location of cylinder is slightly moved in eight different points to find out a probable maximum value of impact pressure. The pressures and total force on cylinder surface are measured by piezo-electric pressure sensors and 3-components load cell with 30kHz sampling rate. The variation of peak impact pressures and forces is analyzed in terms of cylinder diameter, inclination angle and location. Also, the pressure distribution on cylindrical surface is examined. The cylinder location and surface position are more important parameters that govern the magnitude and shape of peak pressures, while the cylinder diameter and inclined angle are relatively insignificant. In a certain conditions, the impact phenomenon becomes very unstable which results in a large variation of measured valves in repeated runs.

  • Since matric suction of unsaturated soil was related to soil and ground water contaminations, it is very important to analyze its mechanism that was represented by shear characteristics. In three phases of soil, a little air makes the condition of unsaturated soil on contract or shrinkage surface between water and air. Capillarity and suction in pore of unsaturated soil cause surface tension and surface force so it makes negative pore water pressure and increases effective stress as a result. Therefore, negative pore water pressure in partially saturated soil affects the soil structure and degree of saturation and it is important to evaluate accurately unsaturate flow and behavior. In this study, the shear strength characteristics of the seven sandy soils were investigated using consolidated drained triaxial tests with special emphasis on the effects of the negative pore pressure and the matric suction. These tests involved shearing under either a constant net confining pressure and varying matric suction or under a constant matric suction and varying net normal stress.

  • The shear spinning process, where the plastic deformation zone is localized in a very small portion of the workpiece, shows a promise for increasingly broader application to the production of axially symmetric parts. In this paper, the three components of the working force are calculated by a newly proposed deformation model in which the spinning process is understood as shearing deformation after uniaxial yielding by bending, and shear stress, $\tau_{rz}$, becomes k, yield limit in pure shear, in the deformation zone. The tangential force are first calculated and the feed force and the normal force are obtained by the assumption of uniform distribution of roller pressure on the contact surface. The optimum contact area is obtained by minimizing the bending energy required to get the assumed deformation of the blank. The calculated forces are compared with experimental results. A comparison shows that theoretical prediction is reasonably in good agreement with experimental results

  • This paper developed the model for electro hydraulic force control system by identification method via ARMAX model. Implementation of Identification is performed on Pin-On-Disk type tribotester. The wear mechanism is an important mechanic property to select a material´s life and a optimum work condition. Pin-on-disk type tribotester is popular wear analysis experimental equipment and its mechanism is that adding a force on a rotating disk to simplify two surface contact´s wear experimental condition. Material´s rotating velocity and eccentricity rotation makes disturbance and it affects adding constant force. To get a high performance of force adding part, DDV(Direct Drive Valve) which has pressure control loop is used. To obtain a tribotester´ s ARMAX model, prediction error method(PEM) is used in case force adding part and rotating part is ...

  • This study was performed the blankholding force and Vee-ring effects on blanking characteristics, such as maximum blanking force, burnish, dish-shape, hardness. etc. in fine-blanking die by the experimental method. Two types of aluminum (Al.1050-O, Al, 5052-H) Such as annealed and unannealed materials were used for the experiment. In order to get a hydrostatic pressure effect, the clearance was set to 0.5% of the thickness of strip, and the counter punch and stripper plate with Vee-ring was set-up. While this experiment was carry8ing out, the average blanking velocity was constant (37.5mm/sec). As a result of this study, we got a good surface roughness and a dimensions, the good squareness and the reduction of dish-shape could be obtained, and also the additional results obtained were such that the hardness of shear plane was increased and the maximum blanking force was reduce in the condition of Vee-ring height of 1.0~1.5mm, and blankholding force of 1200kg.

  • This paper describes about the analysis of firing rebounding force exerted on the launching system supporting structure. The measured high pressure data at the launching tube is used as external force. The maximum firing rebounding force was occurred when the snubber of inner structure contacts the surface of wall in launching tube.

  • The motion and wave drift forces of floating BBDB (backward-bent duct buoy) wave energy absorbers in regular waves are calculated, taking account of the oscillating surface-pressure due to the pressure drop in the air chamber above the oscillating water column, within the scope of the linear wave theory. A series of model tests has been conducted in order to order to verify the motion and time mean wave drift force reponses in regular waves at the ocean engineering basin, MOERI/KORDI. The pneumatic damping through an orifice-type duct for the BBDB wave energy device are deducted from experimental research. Numerical simulation for motion and drift force responses of the BBDB wave energy device, considering pneumatic damping coefficients, has been carried out, and the results are compared with those of model tests.

  • A wind tunnel experiment was performed with the design wind speed of 50m/s to investigate the wind forces of Ieodo Ocean Research Station. The structure portion above water surface was modelled with 1/80 scale ratio. The wind force coefficients were determined from the force signals and compared to the results of a numerical study which was separately undertaken. Those results generally agreed well, and it is assured that the experimental data can be effectively used in the wind resistant design of the structure. Making use of the experimental force and pressure coefficients, the wind farce and moments acting on the overall upper structure of prototype are determined together with the wind pressures on local impervious facilities (main deck, solar panel and helideck).
