  • The composition of the diet of juvenile barbel steeds, Hemibarbus labeo was studied using 67 specimens collected in August, 2004 from the surf zone of the Nakdong river estuary. The fish examined ranged from 5.1 to 9.7 cm in standard length (SL). Hemibarbus labeo was found to be carnivorous and consumed mainly amphipods, with teleosts, polychaetes, and shrimps following. They showed size-related changes in diet. Small individuals (< 6.4 cm SL) mainly consumed amphipods. As fish size increased, the portion of amphipods consumed decreased, while a reverse trend was evident for teleosts. It was also observed that Hemibarbus labeo consumed more amphipods and polychaetes during the day, while fish served as their main prey during the night.

  • Monthly samples of surf zone fish at Taechon Beach were collected by a beach seine from June 1995 to May 1996, and analyzed for the species composition, abundance and community structure. Of 26 species identified, Favonigobius gymnauchen, Leiognathus nuchalis, Sillago japonica and Kareius bicoloratus predominated in abundance. In spring, the adults of resident species were dominated. A large number of juveniles of pelagic or demersal fish occupied the surf zone from summer to autumn. Fish numbers and biomass were low in winter. The species composition of the present study showed a similar seasonal trend to that obtained in 1984-85. However, demersal fish such as K. bicoloratus, Repomucenus lunatus, Johnius belengerii and Enedrias fangi, and L. nuchalis were increased, while pelagic fish such as Thrissa koreana, Sardinella zunasi and Konosirus punctatus were diminished. These changes seemed to be related to sedimentation of fine particles for demersal fish and subsequent increase in turbidity for pelagic fish after reclamation in the bay.

  • The diet composition of juvenile Korean piscivorous chub, Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis were studied using 277 specimens collected from January to December 2004 in the surf zone of Nakdong river estuary. The size of Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis ranged from 2.6 to 9.1 cm in standard length (SL). Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis was carnivore that consumes mainly amphipods and insects. Its diet also included small quantities of polychaetes, fishes, and algae and plants. Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis showed ontogenetic diet change. Smaller individuals (< 4 cm SL) mainly consumed amphipods. The portion of these prey items decreased with increasing fish size, and this decrease was paralleled with increased consumption of larger preys such as polychaetes and fishes. Insects were preyed moderated values in all size classes. Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis diet also showed diel change with consuming more on amphipods and polychaetes during day.

  • Fish assemblage occupying the surf zone habitat of Taecheon sand beach in Cheonsu Bay was analyzed using monthly samples collected by a beach seine from September 1984 through August 1985. During each sampling period five hauls were completed, one at each 2-hour interval during the spring tide. Of 35 species identified, Favonigobius gymnauchen, Sillago japonica, Konosirus punctatus, Sardinella zunasi and chaenogobius mororana accounted for 79% of the individuals collected, and F. gymnauchen, s. japonica, K. punctatus, S. zunasi and Kareius bicoloratus constituted 67% of the biomass obtained. Overall abundance in terms of numbers and in biomass were 0.13 individuals/m$^2$ and 0.33g/m$^2$, respectively. A larger number of individuals and greater biomass was observed during the warmer months showing significant correlation with water temperature. High abundance of June was related to the occurrence of adult F. gymnauchen. A large number of individuals and great biomass was collected in August and September, a period of high abundance in juveniles of the seasonal species such as S. japonica, K. punctatus and S. zunasi. Temperature and habitat occupation according to life history of the dominant species might be the primary factors of the marked seasonality of the surf zone fish populations in the study area.

  • Surf-zone fishes in Daechon Beach, situated at the mouth of Cheonsu Bay, Korea, were collected by a beach seine during the spring and neap tides in August 1999. Short-term variation in species composition was analyzed based on tidal range, tidal level, and time of day. Of 24 species identified, juvenile pelagic fishes predominated in the number of individuals captured. Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed that the number of individuals was significantly higher during the spring tide than during the neap tide. During the spring tide the fishes were more abundant at the low level than at the high level, while during the neap tide there was no significant difference. The mean density of pelagic fishes did not show significant differences between high and low tides. Demersal fishes were caught mainly in the water below the low level of the neap tide.

  • Gobiid fish were collected monthly in Cheonsu Bay by a beach seine from the shallow water and by an otter trawl from the deep water from September, 1984 to August, 1986. Seasonal variation in species composition and biology of the major species were examined with the data of length and age composition. Fourteen speices of gobies were identified. Gobiid fish were more abundant in the shallow water than in the deep water. In the shallow water, they constituted 66% and 39% of the fish collected in the mud flat and the sand beach, respectively. The suction discs of the gobies explains that they inhabit successfully in the surf zone where the wave action is strong. Of the major species, Chaenogobius mororanus predominated in the shallow mud flat. A large number of adults of this species were obtained in Spring and their juveniles were collected from Summer through Autumn. Favonigobius gymnauchen was abundant in the shallow water, especially in the sand beach. This fish seemed to spawn from May through June, about two months later than Chaenogobius mororanus. Acanthogobius hasta juveniles lived in the shallow water and moved into the deep water as the fish grew. Chaturichthys stigmatias was collected mainly in the deep zone.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of shallow water fish off Yongwon, Jinhae in the southern coast of Korea was determined by the analysis of monthly samples collected by a beach seine from January to December, 1998. Among 54 species identified, the resident species such as Favonigobius gymnauchen, Chaenogobius laevis, Pholis nebulosa and juvenile Hyporhamphus intermedius were predominated in abundance. The temporal species such as Sardinella zunasi, Leiognathus nuchalis and Takifugu niphobles were collected between April and September. Mean abundance (322 individuals/1000 $m^2$ or 806 g/1000 $m^2$) was higher than that in the shallow sand surf zone of Teachon, but lower than that in the shallow mud area of Chonsu Bay in the western coast of Korea. A large number of H. intermedius were collected in cold months between November and January. The dominant resident species began to be collected from february, and the number of species and biomass were increased until July. A small number of temporal species were collected and subsequently the abundance was low from August to October when high abundance was expected as in the other shallow waters by recruitment of a large number of juveniles of temporal species. The low abundance in these warm months seemed to be related to the water quality by weak water circulation in this shallow mud area.
