  • We consider a supply chain consisting of a make-to-order manufacturer and N component suppliers and study the impacts of the number of suppliers on component inventory management. The manufacturer has full information and continuously observes the state of both component inventory level and customer backorders. Based on this information, the manufacturer determines whether or not to place a component purchasing order to a supplier among N suppliers even though some orders are in process by other suppliers. The goal of this paper is to numerically identify the manufacturer's purchasing policy which minimizes the total supply chain cost and the best choice of N. Our model contributes to the current literature in that the problem of simultaneously considering multiple outstanding orders and incorporating order setup cost into the model has not been covered yet. From numerical experiment, we investigate how much the policy with N suppliers can contribute to reducing the supply cost compared to the policy with a single supplier.

  • The successful implementation of green supply chain management(GSCM) practices requires a level of cooperation that can be difficult to conduct. Despite this challenge, limited scholarly attention has been paid to exploring how the implementation of GSCM practices can be effectively facilitated and enhanced through accumulated social capital with suppliers. Based on social capital theory, this study postulates that supplier network characteristics derived from social capital with key suppliers can be critical antecedents of GSCM, which in turn enhances the firm's environmental performance. To test hypotheses, data were collected from 330 firms in 15 countries, and structural equation modeling was employed. Results show that GSCM improves environmental performance, and structural and cognitive social capitals of the supplier network act as antecedents and lead to GSCM implementation.

  • Background: Supplier induced demand (SID) indicates the case when doctors increase the demand of the patients, following their (physicians') own best interests rather than patients'. This may occur when asymmetry of information exists between suppliers and consumers. This study aims to confirm whether SID exists in the Korean setting, particularly by dividing SID into both 'induced demand effect' and 'availability effect.' Methods: Induced demand effect and availability effect are differentiated following Carlsen & Grytten's theoretical frame which divides doctor density regions into high and low ones. Results: Positive correlation between doctors' density and utilization of their services was found, which could be interpreted as 'availability effect.' Conclusion: The result suggests that additional medical use for additional doctor, particularly in the area of low doctor density, can be interpreted to occur to meet the basic medical need of the people rather than as a result of unnecessary induced demand. It is important to make more medical doctors provided and to distribute them appropriately across the region in such a country like Korea where doctor's density is relatively low.

  • Rapid knowledge change, heightened competition. and shortened product life cycles are just a few of the constants faced by many buying firms in today's markets. Many buying firms have responded to these conditions by outsourcing non-core activities. The Quality and cost of a product or service offered in the market is a function, not only of the capabilities of the firm, but also of the network of suppliers who provide inputs to the firm. When a firm finds its suppliers lacking in performance it can help suppliers to develop their capabilities. There are three main goals for this study. The first goal is to identify the important factors that precede and influence firms' investment in knowledge transfer activities. The second goal is to investigate the relationship between knowledge transfer activities and the consequences of knowledge transfer activities. The last goal is to explore the effects of knowledge change speed. To analyze the validity of the research model and the hypotheses. the data are collected from 238 manufacturing firms through the administration of structured Questionnaires. The results of structural equation model analyses indicate that the model is generally valid and 11 of 14 hypotheses are supported by the data. Reasons for and implications of these observed relationships are discussed.

  • Purpose - This study aims to provide a clue on which factors current managers and many more potential entrepreneurial applicants were required to concentrate on presenting effective research methods in the effects of purchasing companies' perception of service quality about suppliers of MRO industrial goods on the quality of relationships. Research design, data, and methodology - To accomplish the purpose of this study, we plan to conduct a research model with factors of MRO service quality as the leading variables and conduct a causal analysis using regression analysis on their influence relations. Results - In order to achieve the above purpose, it is necessary to select service quality factors suitable for the characteristics of MRO industrial goods supplier companies. And it is necessary to develop a plan for improving the relationship quality with buyer companies by understanding the sales orientation of MRO industrial goods supplier companies. Also, they develop a combined strategy capable of facilitating relationship quality by clarifying the role of rapport. Conclusions - It is expected that these results will provide strategic clues which service quality factors should be improved from the perspective of supplier companies and will provide various information on educational training sales skills of the sales staff.

  • In this paper, we analyze a logistic system involving a supplier who produces and delivers multiple types of items and a buyer who receives and sells the products to end customers. The buyer controls the inventory level by replenishing each product item up to a given order-up-to-level to cope with stochastic demand of end customers. In response to the buyer's order, the supplier produces or outsources the ordered item and delivers them at the start of each period. For the system described above, a mathematical model for a single type of item was developed from the buyer's perspective. Based on the model, an efficient method to find the cycle length and safety factor which correspond to a local minimum solution is proposed. This single product model was extended to cover a multiple item situation. From the model, algorithms to decide the base cycle length and order interval of each item were proposed. The results of the computational experiment show that the algorithms were able to determine the global optimum solution for all tested cases within a reasonable amount of time.

  • This study compares and analyzes wholesale(or price-only) contract, revenue-sharing contract, quantity-flexibility contract, and channel-rebate contract in a decentralized supply chain consisting of one supplier and one retailer. By setting the parameters of each coordination contract based on the previous results, we conduct simulations using @RISK for several combinations of these parameters. Under the supply chain coordination, we evaluate the probability of successfully signing a contract and the participant in favor of each contract. As a result, the quantity-flexibility contracts is most advantageous for the retailer and the channel-rebate contracts is most advantageous for the supplier. It revealed that revenue-sharing contracts can be used more flexibly because they can be selected in the widest range to redistribute profits between supplier and retailer.

  • The purpose of this research is to study customer-supplier relationships, particularly their partnerships, to help managers and practitioners successfully design, develop, implement and deploy tools and joint practices as a means for an effective supply chain management (SCM). To achieve this purpose, a total of 1,811 potential survey questionnaire respondents responsible for purchasing, sales/marketing, quality-, and production- or operations-related functions of U.S. private manufacturing companies in SIC 35, 36, and 37 were used to collect quantitative data. Using 172 usable survey questionnaire responses, eight hypothesized relationships were tested using two independent (joint use of specific tools and joint practices) and four dependent variables (informed partners, role integrity, conflict resolution, and mutuality). From the overall perspective (customer+supplier), organizations with higher levels of joint action have higher degrees of informed partners whereas organizations with higher levels of joint action resolve conflicts formally and do not have higher degrees of mutuality.

  • In this paper, we consider a single-vendor single-buyer supply chain problem where a single vendor orders raw materials from its supplier, then using its manufacturing processes converts the raw materials to finished goods in order to deliver finished goods to a single buyer for effective implementation of Just-In-Time Purchasing. An integrated lot-splitting model of facilitating multiple shipments in small lots between buyer and supplier is developed in a JIT Purchasing environment. Also, an iterative heuristic solution procedure is developed to find the order quantity for finished goods and raw materials, and number of shipments between buyer and supplier. We show by numerical example that when the integrated policy is adopted by both vendor and buyer in a cooperative manner, both parties can benefit.

  • We show how a supplier can peg cost measures to the reliability of his time guarantees via the penalty costs considered in the framework. The framework also enables us to study the connections between the logistics network and the market. In this context, we show that even when the market base increases significantly, the supplier can still use the logistics network designed to satisfy lower demand density, with only a marginal reduction in profit. Finally we show how the framework is useful to evaluate and compare various logistics system improvement strategies. The supplier can then easily choose the improvement strategy that increases his profit with the minimal increase in his logistics costs.
