We examine the value of information sharing in the context of supplier-buyer relationships after controlling for trading partners' opportunism. Given that trading partners' opportunism is not randomly chosen, we explicitly incorporate their self-selection process into our estimation procedure by employing Heckman's self-selection model. According to our analysis, firms that have built safeguards via mutual trust, commitments and information sharing experience less opportunistic risk in supplier-buyer relationships. Our findings also suggest that information sharing has a positive impact on firm performance after controlling for opportunism. Further, firms that are less exposed to trading partners' opportunistic risk have achieved a higher performance than others that are more exposed. Importantly, higher performance for those firms with less opportunistic risk is driven by safeguards in supplier-buyer relationships as well as information sharing. Our findings can be applied for systems analysts to design information systems of supplier-buyer transactions.
Purpose - This paper aims to examine the impact of buyer-supplier cooperation on suppliers' trust on buyers and the moderating role of buyers' governance mechanism between the sharing activities and trust. Research design, data, and methodology - An integrated research model is designed to materialize the research hypotheses. First, the impact of buyer-supplier cooperation is empirically analyzed by looking into how the sharing activities, in the field of information, resource, and knowledge, of buyer with supplier will affect the trust of supplier on buyer. Second, the moderating effect of contract-based governance mechanism of buyer is empirically analyzed. Third, the influence of trust on innovation performance of suppler is empirically analyzed. Results - Our findings provide supporting evidence for some of our hypotheses. First, all of the sharing activities are significantly influential, but in different degree, to trust of supplier. Second, contract-based governance mechanism of buyer have a moderating effect on the relationship between sharing activities and trust, positively in resource-sharing activities, negatively in information-sharing activities, not significant in knowledge-sharing activities. Third, supplier's trust on buyer positively affects supplier's own innovation performance. Conclusions - The strategies applied in supply chain management have become important as the competition among firms has shifted from competition between individual firms to competition between supply chains. A customer's sharing activities with its supplier may contribute to an increase in innovation performance. The supplier's information-sharing activity with its customer could affect its information-sharing activities with its main supplier. Cooperative activity with a partner in the supply chain is cultivated and amassed into relationship knowledge, and this study shows that the cooperative relational knowledge related to information-sharing activities enables firms to participate in sharing activities with their main suppliers. Increasing evidence shows that sharing various activities between buyer and supplier improves trust and performance outcomes, and enables firms to maintain competitive advantage. From the perspective of knowledge theory, external knowledge is becoming more important in firms' innovation activities, because innovative knowledge is acquired primarily through interaction with another organization. In addition, relationship learning could be an important tool in absorbing the supplier's core technology, information, expertise, and core competencies, increasing relational value.

This study investigates the impact of supplier involvement, customer involvement, and employee training on product quality and organizational performance. Based on literature review, this study develops hypotheses and tests them by employing a structural equations model. Using survey data of 193 firms from 22 manufacturing industries, this study empirically shows that the activities for supply chain quality management (SCQM) enhance the quality and organizational performance. Specifically, quality leadership is revealed to be an antecedent of other SCQM activities. The most contributable finding is, while the supplier involvement and employee training directly enhance the organizational performance, customer involvement indirectly improves it via quality performance.
In many industries, competitive advantage is rapidly shifting to the management of suppliers. Especially, in the automotive industry, suppliers' manufacturing performance influences the quality of automobiles which are assembled by motor companies. This study seeks to identify dominant types of buyer-supplier relationships and to examine suppliers' performance difference according to types of buyer-supplier relationships. The findings indicate that the supplier's production performance in the cooperative relationship is higher than that of the suppliers in the other relationships. And then this study examines the relationships between interfirm asset specificity and suppliers' performance. The findings indicate that the greater the interfirm human asset cospecialization and physical asset specialization, the higher the supplier's market and production performance.
Selecting suppliers in the global supply chain is the very difficult and complicated decision making problem particularly due to the various types of supply risk in addition to the uncertain performance of the potential suppliers. This paper proposes a multi-phase decision making model for supplier selection under supply risks in global supply chains. In the first phase, the model suggests supplier selection solutions suitable to a given condition of decision making using a rule-based expert system. The expert system consists of a knowledge base of supplier selection solutions and an "if-then" rule-based inference engine. The knowledge base contains information about options and their consistency for seven characteristics of 20 supplier selection solutions chosen from articles published in SCIE journals since 2010. In the second phase, the model computes the potential suppliers' general performance indices using a technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) based on their scores obtained by applying the suggested solutions. In the third phase, the model computes their risk indices using a TOPSIS based on their historical and predicted scores obtained by applying a risk evaluation algorithm. The evaluation algorithm deals with seven types of supply risk that significantly affect supplier's performance and eventually influence buyer's production plan. In the fourth phase, the model selects Pareto optimal suppliers based on their general performance and risk indices. An example demonstrates the implementation of the proposed model. The proposed model provides supply chain managers with a practical tool to effectively select best suppliers while considering supply risks as well as the general performance.
Managers have come to realized that a large and increasing amount of sources for a corporate competitive advantage can be found in their company's supply chain. At a fundamental level, there is a similar consensus that building a collaborative supply management is a more effective way of managing firms' supply chains. This paper is an attempt to examine the effects of collaborative supply management by probing a mechanism which shows how competences and/or performance are transferred from suppliers to markets through the supply chains. Research hypotheses regarding the relationships between collaborative supply management, supplier Performance, buyer internal performance (new product development and operational performance), and buyer market performance were empirically validated by utilizing a structural equation modeling analysis. The research result Indicates the positive impacts of a collaborative supply chain on supply performance as well as buyer internal and market performance, which also well illustrate how the improved competence and/or performance of suppliers engendered from the supplier-buyer collaboration flows throughout the entire supply chain.
In supply chains, collaboration between buyer and supplier can improve firms' ability of supply chains to their objectives and competitive advantages. A key factor in collaboration in supply chain is to identify buyer relationships and supply relationships as antecedents of the factor collaboration. We analyzed data collected from buyers and suppliers sampled from a mobile networks industry in Korea and found that the level of collaboration comes from strong relationships between two parties and the collaboration enhances the supply chain performances. However, buyer relationships and supplier relationships have indirect impacts on trading partners' performance through collaboration whereas both have direct impacts on one's performance. Therefore to enhance supply chain performances, supplier's operational efficiency and buyer satisfaction, firms of buyers and suppliers should consider pursuing practical and substantial collaboration along with buyer-supplier relationships.
The objective of this research is to identify perceived organizational performance changes resulting from customer-supplier partnership and their joint action. In addition, the perceived organizational performance change in this research is compared with objectively measured organizational performance improvement to see if there is any difference between them.
