  • The objective of this paper is to study experimentally on the noise characteristics of supersonic jet from multihole orifice in the range of jet pressure from $at_g$ to $at_g$ in the reverberation room. At first, the single orifice jets are investigated for various hole diameter from 3.8mm to 10mm. Through the noise spectrum, the turbulent mixing noise and the shock associated noise is analyzed. The noise for confined jets into a tube of diameter 30mm or 90mm with length 2m is investigated in comparision with that for the free jets. The sound power level is measured and compared with thoretical models for free jet. At second, multihole orifice jets are investigated to study the effect of multijet on noise reduction. The spectrum and power level of multijets are measured and compared with single jets. The multi-jets in a confined pipe are also investigated. It is found that the noise spectrum is significantly altered by increasing the number of jet with decrease in jet diameter and also by confining the jet into tube.

  • It is well known that screech tones of supersonic jet are generated by a feedback loop driven by the instability waves. Near the nozzle lip where the supersonic jet mixing layer is receptive to external excitation, acoustic disturbances impinging on this area excite the instability waves. This fact implies that the nozzle lip thickness can influence the screech tones of supersonic jet. The objective of the present study is to experimentally investigate the effect of nozzle-lip thickness on screech tones of supersonic jets issuing from a convergent-divergent nozzle. A baffle plate was installed at the nozzle exit to change the nozzle-lip thickness. Detailed acoustic measurement and flow visualization were made to specify the screech tones. The results obtained obviously show that nozzle-lip thickness significantly affects the screech tones of supersonic jet, strongly depending on whether the jet at the nozzle exit is over-expanded or under-expanded.

  • An axisymmetric supersonic jet is simulated at a Mach number of 1.5 and a Reynolds number of $10^5$ to identify the mechanism of sound radiation from the jet. The present simulation is performed based on the high-order accuracy and high-resolution ENO(Essentially Non-Oscillatory) schemes to capture the time-dependent flow structure representing the sound source. In this simulation, optimum expansion jet is selected as a target, where the pressure at nozzle exit is equal to that of the ambient pressure, to see pure shear layer growth without effect of change in jet cross section due to expansion or shock wave generated at nozzle exit. Shock waves are generated near vortex rings, and discernible pressure waves called Mach wave are radiated in the downstream direction with an angle from the jet axis, which is characteristic of high speed jet noise. Furthermore, vortex roll-up phenomena are observed through the visualization of vorticity contours.

  • An attempt to reduce supersonic jet noise is carried out by using two steady microjets in a round jet. The jet is issued from a round sonic nozzle with an exit diameter of 10 mm. Two micro-nozzles with an inside diameter of 1 mm each are installed on the exit plane at an angle of 45 relative to the main jet axis. Far-field noise was measured at 40 diameters off the jet axis. The angle between a microphone and the jet axis is 30 or 90$^{\circ}$. For an injection rate of 4-6% of the main jet, screech tones were completely suppressed by the microjets. The reduction in the overall sound pressure levels were 2.4 and 2.7 dB for 90 and 30 measuring directions, respectively. However, the enhancement of mixing/spreading of the jet by the microjet was negligible. The reduction of noise is probably due to distorted shock cell structures and/or deformed large scale vortical structures by the microjets.

  • A supersonic dual coaxial jet has been employed popularly for various industrial purposes, such as gasdynamic laser, supersonic ejector, noise control and enhancement of mixing. Detailed characteristics of supersonic dual coaxial jets issuing from an inner supersonic nozzle and outer sonic nozzles with various ejection angles are experimentally investigated. Three important parameters, such as pressure ratios of the inner and outer nozzles, and outer nozzle ejection angle, are chosen for a better understanding of jet structures in the present study. The results obtained from the present experimental study show that the Mach disk diameter becomes smaller, and the Mach disk moves toward the nozzle exit, and the length of the first shock cell decreases with the pressure ratio of the outer nozzle. It was also found that the highly underexpanded outer jet produces a new oblique shock wave, which makes jet structure much more complicated. On the other hand the outer jet ejection angle affects the structure of the inner jet structure less than the pressure ratio of the outer nozzle, relatively.

  • When the under-expanded supersonic jet impinges on the perpendicular plate, it is well known that the self-induced flow oscillation occurs at the specific conditions. This phenomenon is related with the noise problems of aeronautical and other industrial engineering. But, the very complicated flow field is formed and it is difficult to clear the flow structure and the mechanism of oscillation. This paper aims to clear the characteristics of flow field and the wave pattern during the under-expanded supersonic jet impinges on the plate. The numerical calculation was carried out using the TVD numerical method. In this paper, the flow visualization, the pressure fluctuation on the surface of plate and the mechanism of oscillation are discussed.

  • The objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the noise propagating characteristics, the noise reduction mechanism and the performance of a slotted tube attached at the exit plane of a circular convergent nozzle. The experiment is performed through the systematic change of the jet pressure ratio and the slot length under the condition of two kinds of open area ratios, 25% and 51%. The open area ratio calculated by the tube length equivalent for the slot length is defined as the ratio of the total slot area to the surface area of a slotted tube. The experimental results for the near and far field sound, the visualization of jet structures and the static pressure distributions in the jet passing through a slotted tube are presented and explained in comparison with those for a simple tube. The propagating characteristics of supersonic jet noises from the slotted tube is closely connected with the slot length rather than the open area ratio, and its propagating pattern is similar to the simple tube. It is shown that the slotted tube has a good performance to suppress the shock-associated noise as well as the turbulent mixing noise in the range of a limited jet pressure and slot dimension. The considerable suppression of the shock‘associated noise is mainly due to the pressure relief caused by the high-speed jets passing through the slots on the tube. Both the strength of shock waves and the interval between them in a jet plume are decreased by the pressure relief. Moreover, the pressure relief is divided into the gradual and the sudden relief depending upon the open area ratio of the slotted tube. Consequently, the shock waves in a jet plume are also changed by the type of pressure relief. The gradual pressure relief caused by the slotted tube with the open area ratio 25% generates the weak oblique shock waves. On the contrary, the weak normal shock waves appear due to the sudden pressure relief caused by the slotted tube with the open area ratio 51%.

  • To investigate the generation mechanism of the shock-associated noise, an underexpanded supersonic jet from an axisymmetic nozzle is simulated under the conditions of the Nozzle exit Mach number of 2 and the exit pressure ratio of Pe/Pe =1.5. The present simulation is performed based on the high-order accuracy and high-resolution ENO (Essentially Non-Oscillatory) scheme to capture the time-dependent flow structure representing the sound source. It was found that the shock-associated noise is generated by the weak interaction between the downstream propagating large turbulence structures of the jet flow and the quasi-periodic shock cell structure during the one is passing through the other. The directivity of propagating waves to the upstream is clearly shown in the visualization of pressure field. It is shown that the present calculation of the centerline pressure distribution is in fare agreement with the experimental data at the location of first shock cell.
