  • This research aims in finding a more optimal ejector size for evacuating engine exhaust gasses and 20% of the cell cooling air. The remaining 80% of cell cooling air pumped into the test chamber is separately exhausted from the test chamber via a discharge port fitted with flow control valves and vacuum pump. Unlike its predecessor this configuration utilizes a smaller capture area to improve pressure recovery. The modified ejector size has a diameter of 1100mm enough to evacuate 66kg/s jet engine exhaust in addition to about 20%, 24kg/s of the cell cooling air tapped from the sterling chamber. This configurations has an area ratio of the engine exit and ejector inlet of about 1.2. Simulation results of the proposed ejector configuration, indicates improved pressure recovery.

  • This paper describes the machining characteristics of the MoSi$_2$--based composites through the process of electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes. In addition to hardness characteristics, microstructures of Nb/MoSi$_2$laminate composites were evaluated from the variation of fabricating conditions, such as preparation temperature, applied pressure, and pressure holding time. MoSi$_2$-based composites have been developed in new materials for jet engines of supersonic-speed airplanes and gas turbines for high-temperature generators. These high performance engines may require new hard materials with high strength and high temperature-resistance. Also, with the exception of grinding, traditional machining methods are not applicable to these new materials. Electric discharge machining (EDM) is a thermal process that utilizes a spark discharge to melt a conductive material. The tool electrode is almost -unloaded, because there is n direct contact between the tool electrode and the work piece. By combining a non-conducting ceramic with more conducting ceramic, it was possible to raise the electrical conductivity. From experimental results, it was found that the lamination from Nb sheet and MoSi$_2$ powder was an excellent strategy to improve hardness characteristics of monolithic MoSi$_2$. However, interfacial reaction products, like (Nb, Mo)SiO$_2$and Nb$_2$Si$_3$formed at the interface of Nb/MoSi$_2$, and increased with fabricating temperature. MoSi$_2$composites, with which a hole drilling was not possible through the conventional machining process, enhanced the capacity of ED-drilling by adding MbSi$_2$, relative to that of SiC or ZrO$_2$reinforcements.

  • The air velocity flowing in inner combustion chamber of SCramjet is supersonic and the time of its stay is very short as a few milliseconds. Within this short time, fuel injection, air-fuel mixing, and combustion process should be accomplished. Several methods are suggested for mixing enhancement. Among these, cavity is selected to study for mixing characteristics. The numerical simulation is performed in the case of freestream Mach number of 2.5 and cavity located in front of fuel jet injection. 3 different sized cavities of the same length-height ratio were used in order to recognize the effect about cavity size. Also, the case without cavity was analyzed to find the effect of cavity. Used code compared with the result of experiment under identical conditions and it was verified. Through this comparison and verification, mixing enhancement by cavity size could be confirmed.

The flight control system utilizes RSS criteria in longitudinal axis to achieve performance enhancements and improve stability. The flight control law of T-50 advanced trainer employs RSS concept in order to improve the aerodynamic performance and guarantee aircraft stability. The longitudinal center of gravity(X-c.g) varies as a function of external stores, fuel state and gear position. Shifts in X-c.g relate directly to longitudinal static margin in aircraft stability. This paper deals the maximum aft X-c.g for critical aircraft loadings and checks static margin limits using sensitivity such as damping, natural frequency, gain and phase margin. And nonlinear analysis was conducted for such as short period input. And also, this paper shows the T-50 aircraft stability based on the result of high angle of attack flight such as upright and inverted departure.

  • Modern versions of supersonic jet fighter aircraft using a digital flight-by-wire flight control system design utilizes a control surface reconfiguration in order to guarantee the aircraft flight stability when a control surface is failed. The T-50 flight control laws are designed such that the surface reconfiguration mode controls the aircraft using non-failed control surfaces when one of the control surfaces is failed. In this paper, linear analysis and HQS(Handling Quality Simulator) pilot simulations are performed to analyze the flight stability and handling quality when the surface reconfiguration mode is engaged for aircraft landing configuration. It is found that the aircraft flight stability and handling quality is satisfied to level 1 requirements when the T-50 flight control law is changed to the surface reconfiguration mode.

The laws of flight control system utilize RSS criteria in both longitudinal and lateral-directional axes to achieve performance enhancements. Particularly, the design of longitudinal control laws for utilizing RSS methods greatly affects the performance of the aircraft in Air-to-Air Tracking and Air-to-Ground modes, which improves weapon delivery. In the area of Air-to-Air Tracking, the development of longitudinal control laws aids in the fine tracking and gross acquisition of other aircraft. • Modern versions of supersonic jet fighter aircraft have several different weapon loading configuration to support air-to-air combat and air-to-ground delivery of weapon modes. These various aircraft loading conditions could result in asymmetric configurations to the aircraft once delivered. These asymmetric configurations could result in decreased handling qualities for the pilot maneuvering, stability, control issues and aerodynamic performance of the aircraft. In order to eliminate or decrease these adverse impacts on the pilot's ability, development of T-50 flight control law attempts to control the aircraft in both longitudinal and lateral-directional axes. Especially, the design of the lateral-directional roll axis control laws, utilizing a simple roll rate feedback structure and gains such as F-16, is developed for the T-50 aircraft to meet the aircraft's design requirements. Consequently, it is found that the improved control law decreases the roll-off phenomenon in lateral axes during pitch maneuver.

  • In this study, a simplified axisymmetric model is proposed for the problem of compressible internal flow past a microgap. Using numerical and experimental methods, the phenomena of choked flows are observed; these flows are induced by the acceleration of subsonic flows past the narrow cross-section of an annular shape made by a microgap. The relation between mass flow rate and differential pressure is obtained, and by comparing the result with experimental results, the reliability of the numerical results is discussed. The generation of a supersonic jet flow and its diffraction are visualized by performing the numerical analysis of axisymmetric compressible Navier-Stokes equations. This investigation greatly extends the physical understanding of the axisymmetric compressible flow, which has a wide range of engineering applications, e.g., in the case of valves in automotive power systems.

  • The ejector is a simple device which can transport a low-pressure secondary flow by using a high-pressure primary flow. In general, it consists of a primary driving nozzle, a mixing section, and a diffuser. The ejector system entrains the secondary flow through a shear action generated by the primary jet. Until now, a large number of researches have been made to design and evaluate the ejector systems, where it is assumed that the ejector system has an infinite secondary chamber which can supply mass infinitely. However, in almost all of the practical applications, the ejector system has a finite secondary chamber implying steady flow can be possible only after the flow inside ejector has reached an equilibrium state after the starting process. To the authors' best knowledge, there are no reports on the starting characteristics of the ejector systems and none of the works to date discloses the detailed flow process until the secondary chamber flow reaches an equilibrium state. The objective of the present study is to investigate the starting process of an ejector-diffuser system. The present study is also planned to identify the operating range of ejector-diffuser systems where the steady flow assumption can be applied without uncertainty. The results obtained show that the one and only condition in which an infinite mass entrainment is possible is the generation of a recirculation zone near the primary nozzle exit. The flow in the secondary chamber attains a state of dynamic equilibrium at this point.
