  • Turbopump, which is a part of 75 ton open cycle liquid rocket engine has a super sonic impulse turbine. This paper investigated the leading edge thickness effect on the turbine performance experimently. Two rotors were tested with the different leading edge thickness. The ratios (rotor thickness to Pitch) are 1.9 and 1.4 times to 30 ton turbine rotor. As a result, a rotor with 1.4 times ratio had a 1.5% higher efficiency gain than a rotor with 1.9 times ratio. The pressure ratio with the maximum efficiency on the same rotational speed was increased to the full expansion ratio of nozzle.

  • In this study, the flow characteristics within supersonic cascades are numerically investigated by using Fine Turbo, a commercial CFD code. Cascade flows are computed for three different inlet conditions. : a uniform supersonic inlet condition, a linear nozzle and a converging-diverging nozzle located in front of cascades. The effect of inlet conditions is compared and flow characteristics including shock patterns and shock-boundary layer interaction are analyzed. Also the effect of design parameters such as pitch-chord ratio, blade angle and blade surface curvature on the flow within supersonic cascades are studied.

  • A small supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. Experiments were performed to find the flow characteristics of a supersonic turbine with the cascade positions and to find a factor of the expansion loss. The supersonic cascade with a 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested with the cascade positions. The flow was visualized by a Z-type Schlieren system. The static pressures at the turbine cascade inlet and outlet were measured by pressure transducers and a pressure scanner. Also, The total pressures at the turbine cascade back flow were measured. Highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions of the supersonic turbine were observed. And the flow characteristics in the supersonic turbine with the cascade positions were observed.

  • Geometrical design variables are numerically investigated to improve aerodynamic performance of the supersonic impulse turbine of a turbopump in a liquid rocket engine. Aerodynamic redesign was performed for maximization of the blade power. Four design variables considered are blade angle, blade thickness and radii of upper and lower arc blade with appropriate constraints. A fast Navier-Stokes solver was developed and Chien's k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence modelling was used for turbulence closure. In initial shape, a flow separation was found in the middle of blade chord. However, it disappeared in final shape via its geometrical design variable change. About 3.2 percent of blade power was increased from this research.
