Theoretically, stable operations of an inlet are achieved at the design condition. However, at off-design conditions supersonic inlets often encounter the problem of aerodynamic instability, called inlet buzz. During inlet buzz, supersonic inlets exhibit considerable oscillation of the shock system in front of the inlet and corresponding large pressure fluctuations downstream. This phenomenon results in decrease of engine performance. An experimental and numerical study was conducted to investigate the phenomenon of supersonic inlet buzz on a generic, axisymmetric, external-compression inlet with a single-surface center-body. This study suggest that intermittent buzz exist and the frequency become to be large as increasing the back pressure.

The design process of blended inlet body (BIB) for the preliminary design of a near-space high supersonic unmanned aerial vehicle (HSUAV) is presented. The mass flow rate and cowl area of inlet at a design point are obtained according to the cruise condition of the HSUAV. A mixed-compression axisymmetric supersonic inlet section with a fixed geometry reasonably matching the high supersonic cruise state is created by using the inviscid theory of aerodynamics. The inlet section is optimized and used as a baseline section for the BIB design. Three BIB concepts for the HSUAV are proposed, and their internal aerodynamic characteristics of inlet are evaluated using Euler computational fluid dynamics (Euler CFD) solver. The preferred concept is identified, in which the straight leading edge of the baseline HSUAV configuration is modified into the convex leading edge to accommodate the inlet and meet the requirements of the cowl area to capture the sufficient air flow. The total recovery of inlet for the preferred BIB concept and the aerodynamic characteristics of the modified HSUAV configuration are verified using Navier-Stokes computational fluid dynamics (NS CFD) solver. The validation indicates that the preferred BIB concept can meet both the requirements of the inlet and aerodynamic performance of the HSUAV.

A Numerical analysis of preventing pressure oscillation for the supersonic inlet of IRR at the boosting mode was conducted in this study. To reduce the fluctuation of pressure, the supersonic inlet was equipped with annular slit. By decreasing the entrained air mass, the amplitude of fluctuation and maximum pressure at the inlet were decreased while the frequency was increased. In case, the optimal trade-off value is obtained between frequency and amplitude, it is expected that the pressure oscillation declining method using the slit will be helpful in various boosting and transition mode problem for IRR.

off-design conditions, supersonic air inlets often encounter the problem of aerodynamic instability, called inlet buzz, which causes the significant degradation of the engine performance. An experimental and numerical study was conducted to investigate the phenomenon of supersonic inlet buzz on a generic, axisymmetric, external-compression inlet with a single-surface center-body. It is understood the mechanism of buzz onset as proving that the origin of buzz is the flow choking induced by separation at the intake throat. Also it is observed the intermittent and continuous buzz mode as area ratio varies and understood the transition process through this study. The buzz frequency become to be higher as decreasing the area ratio, but for each area ratio, the frequency of pressure oscillation is the same at all points of intake.

An experimental study was conducted at a Mach number of 2.0 to investigate the buzz suppression method on an axisymmetric, external compression supersonic inlet. The inlet model has a fixed geometry with no internal contraction. The inlet configuration was altered by changing the cowling. Results show that source of buzz has been related to the existence in the flow field of velocity discontinuity across a vortex sheet which originates from a shock intersection point. With external compression inlet, buzz can be suppressed by positioning the oblique shock slightly inside or outside of the cowl.

In this paper are presented a concept of a new supersonic air inlet, which is designated a Multi-Row Disk (MRD) inlet, aiming at performance improvement under off-design conditions, and results of wind tunnel tests examined performance characteristics of the MRD inlet. The MRD inlet is frequently called ‘a skeleton inlet’ because of its appearance. The performance of a conventional axisymmetric inlet with a solid center body (spike) deteriorates under off-design Mach number conditions. It is due to the fact that total pressure recovery (TPR) governed by the throat area of inlet and mass capture ratio (MCR) governed by an incidence position of an oblique shock from the spike tip into the cowl can not be controlled independently in such air inlet. The MRD inlet has the spike that is composed of a tip cone and several disks arranged downstream of it, based on the experimental fact that several deep cavities on a conical surface have little negative effect on the boundary layer growth. The overall spike length of the MRD inlet is adjustable to the given flight speed by changing space between disks so that a spillage flow can be controlled independently from controlling the throat area. It could be made clear from the result of wind tunnel tests that the MRD inlet improves TPR by 10% compared with a conventional inlet with a solid spike under off-design conditions.

Temperature and velocity controlling of air at inlet position of Ramjet combustor is important under Ramjet engine grounding-test condition since temperature of inlet air increases due to compression process by supersonic flow at inlet position of Ramjet combustor. In this study, Vitiated Air Heater methodology was used to control temperature of air that is inducted into Ramjet combustor. Temperature and velocity of air at Vitiated air heater exit, which is inducted into Ramjet combustor, were measured to evaluate Vitiated air heater system developed in this study. It is shown that temperature and velocity of inducted air can be well controlled using Vitiated air heater system developed in this study, and we could make a Vitiated Air which is almost same with real air.

The development of an air data acquisition algorithm has been described in the supersonic flow at the preliminary design stage with pressure data acquisition device composed of major three total pressure sensors and two static pressure sensors which are installed on the surface of a cone type supersonic inlet. Through this algorithm, Mach number, angle of attack and sideslip angle can be very easily derived with simple interpolation algorithm and predefined data tables. The available range of Mach number is 1.6 to 4.0, angle of attack, $-12^{\circ}$ to $12^{\circ}$ and sideslip angle, $-12^{\circ}$ to $12^{\circ}$. In preliminary design stage, the data tables applied to the developed algorithm are constructed with data driven by Taylor Maccoll equation. The present algorithm would be useful to get supersonic flow air data for the various aerial vehicles and their flight tests.

This study is the results of the analytical research for a dual-model scramjet engine flowpath which is included inlet, isolator, combustor, and nozzle. To design a dual-mode scramjet engine and to investigate its performance, the performance analysis models and tools are required to develope for aerodynamic, thermodynamic characteristics, propulsion, and total system. Therefore, analysis models for air inlet, isolator, supersonic combustor, and nozzle of a dual-mode scramjet engine were accomplished, the performance characteristics of a dual-mode scramjet engine is investigated with using the developed analysis tools.

Total pressure recovery ratio in intake is crucial factor to the operational characteristics of supersonic propulsion system because it does not compress inlet air mechanically by compressor, but does compress inlet air by ram compression. As the result of that the dynamic characteristic analysis of engine was performed before the controller was designed, it could be ascertained when the AoA of flight vehicle increases, the buzz margin decreases so that the shock wave produced outside intake in the specified area according to flight operation's characteristics. Therefore the PID control algorithm was designed to be controlled buzz margin that the characteristic of shock wave could meet the requirement of performance in intake. The PID controller was designed that the buzz margin value is being positive number using the control variables; fuel flow and nozzle throat area.
