This study compares the performance of two smart isolation systems that utilize superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) for seismic protection of bridges using energy balance concepts. The first isolation system is a SMA/rubber-based isolation system (SRB-IS) and consists of a laminated rubber bearing that decouples the superstructure from the bridge piers and a SMA device that provides additional energy dissipation and re-centering capacity. The second isolation system, named as superelastic-friction base isolator (S-FBI), combines the superelastic SMAs with a flat steel-Teflon bearing rather than a laminated rubber bearing. Seismic energy equations of a bridge structure with SMA-based isolation systems are established by absolute and relative energy balance formulations. Nonlinear time history analyses are performed in order to assess the effectiveness of the isolation systems and to compare their performance. The program RSPMatch 2005 is employed to generate spectrum compatible ground motions that are used in time history analyses of the isolated bridge. Results indicate that SRB-IS produces higher seismic input energy, recoverable energy and base shears as compared to the S-FBI system. Also, it is shown that combining superelastic SMAs with a sliding bearing rather than rubber bearing significantly reduce the amount of the required SMA material.

This paper focuses on the seismic protection of slender old masonry structures by the implementation of prestressing devices at key locations. The devices are vertically and externally located inside the towers in order to be reversible and calibrated. An extensive parametric study on a selected slender tower is carried out based on more than 100 nonlinear static simulations aimed at investigating the impact of different parameters on the seismic performance: (i) different prestressing levels; (ii) shape memory alloy superelasticity and (iii) changes in prestressing-forces in all the stages of the analysis until failure and masonry toe crushing. The tendon materials under analysis are conventional prestressing steel, fiber-reinforced polymers of different fibers and shape memory alloys. The parametric study serves to select the most suitable prestressing device and optimal prestressing level able to dissipate more earthquake energy. The seismic energy dissipation is evaluated by comparing the structural capacity curves in original state and retrofitted.
Transformation behavior and superelastic behavior of Ti-Ni-Cu alloys with various Cu content has been investigated by means of electrical resistivity measurement, X-ray diffraction, tensile test and transmission electron microscopy. Two types of heat treatment are given to the specimens: i) Solutions treatment. ii) thermo-mechanical treatment. The transformation sequence in solution treated Ti-Ni-Cu Alloys substituted by Cu for Ni up to 5at.% occurs to $B2{\rightleftarrows}B19^{\prime}$ and it proceeds in two stages by addition of 10at.%Cu, i. e, $B2{\rightleftarrows}B19{\rightleftarrows}B19^{\prime}$. Also, it has been found that Ti-30Ni-20Cu alloy transformed in one stage : $B2{\rightleftarrows}B19$. The thermo-mechanically treated Ti-47Ni-3Cu alloy transformed in two stages: B2${\rightleftarrows}$rhomboheral phase${\rightleftarrows}B19^{\prime}$, while transformation sequence in Ti-45Ni-5Cu and Ti-40Ni-10Cu alloy transformed as same as solution treated specimens. The critical stress for inducing slip deformation in solution treated and thermo-mechanically treated Ti-40Ni-10Cu alloy is about 90MPa and 320Mpa respectively.
Superelastic Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are gaining acceptance for use as reinforcing bars in concrete structures. The seismic behaviour of concrete frames reinforced with SMAs is being assessed in this study. Two eight-storey concrete frames, one of which is reinforced with regular steel and the other with SMAs at the plastic hinge regions of beams and regular steel elsewhere, are designed and analyzed using 10 different ground motion records. Both frames are located in the highly seismic region of Western Canada and are designed and detailed according to current seismic design standards. The validation of a finite element (FE) program that was conducted previously at the element level is extended to the structure level in this paper using the results of a shake table test of a three-storey moment resisting steel RC frame. The ten accelerograms that are chosen for analyzing the designed RC frames are scaled based on the spectral ordinate at the fundamental periods of the frames. The behaviour of both frames under scaled seismic excitations is compared in terms of maximum inter-storey drift, top-storey drift, inter-storey residual drift, and residual top-storey drift. The results show that SMA-RC frames are able to recover most of its post-yield deformation, even after a strong earthquake.
Ti-Ni-Cu alloys are very attractive shape memory alloys for applications as actuators because of a large transformation elongation and a small transformation hysteresis. Rapidly solidified Ti-Ni alloy ribbons have been known to have the shape memory effect and superelasticity superior to the alloy ingots fabricated by conventional casting. In this study, solidification structures and shape memory characteristics of $Ti-Ni_{30}-Cu_{20}$ alloy ribbons prepared by melt spinning were investigated by means of DSC and XRD. Operating parameters to fabricate the amorphous ribbons were the wheel velocity of 55 m/s and the melt spinning temperature of $1500^{\circ}C$. The crystallization temperature was measured to be $440^{\circ}C$. The crystallized ribbons exhibited very fine microstructure after annealing at $440^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes and $460^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes and was deformed up to about 6.8% and 6.23% in ductile manner, respectively. Stress-strain curve of the ribbon exhibited a flat stress-plateau at 64 MPa and this is associated with the stress-induced a B2-B19 martensitic transformation. During cycle deformation with the applied stress of 220 MPa, transformation hysteresis and elongation associated with the B2-B19 transformation were observed to be $4.3^{\circ}C$ and 3.6%.
The aim of the current study was to predict shape recovery behavior of Ni-Ti shape memory alloy (SMA) wire after loading-unloading and after wire drawing. The superelasticity of SMA was analyzed by a hyper-elastic model for the Mullins effect using ABAQUS. Firstly, tensile tests and loading-unloading tests of the Ni-Ti SMA wire with a diameter 1.0 mm were performed using an MTS servo-hydraulic tester. The parameters for the Mullins effect were computed by ABAQUS based on curve-fitting of the loading-unloading test data. The proposed FE-model predicted the shape recovery of Ni-Ti SMA after wire drawing. Finally, the effectiveness of the model was verified by drawing experiments. The wire drawing experiments using the Ni-Ti SMA were conducted on a drawing machine(1ton, 50mm/s). In order to evaluate the shape recovery of Ni-Ti SMA, the drawn wires are annealed for 30min at $450^{\circ}C$.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of heat treatments on the martensite transformation and tensile deformation behavior in Ti-Ni-B alloys with various boron concentration. Three types of heat treatment are given to the specimens; i) solution treatment ii) aging iii) thermo-mechanical treatment. In solution treated specimens. R-phase transition which is related to abnormal increase of electrical resistance prior to martensitic transformation has been formed at a boron content of 0.2at % and the $M_s$ temperature has been decreased with the increasing of boron content. However. It has not been affected by aging, while that of thermo-mechanically treated specimens has been remarkably increased in the vicinity of recrystallization temperature. The thermo-mechanically treated specimen has showed a good thermal fatigue characteristics, shape memory effect and superelasticity in comparison with the solution treated specimen.
Large-scale earthquakes pose serious threats to infrastructure causing substantial damage and large residual deformations. Superelastic (SE) Shape-Memory-Alloys (SMAs) are unique alloys with the ability to undergo large deformations, but can recover its original shape upon stress removal. The purpose of this research is to exploit this characteristic of SMAs such that concrete Beam-Column Joints (BCJs) reinforced with SMA bars at the plastic hinge region experience reduced residual deformation at the end of earthquakes. Another objective is to evaluate the seismic performance of SMA Reinforced Concrete BCJs repaired with flowable Structural-Repair-Concrete (SRC). A $\frac{3}{4}$-scale BCJ reinforced with SMA rebars in the plastic-hinge zone was tested under reversed cyclic loading, and subsequently repaired and retested. The joint was selected from an RC building located in the seismic region of western Canada. It was designed and detailed according to the NBCC 2005 and CSA A23.3-04 recommendations. The behaviour under reversed cyclic loading of the original and repaired joints, their load-storey drift, and energy dissipation ability were compared. The results demonstrate that SMA-RC BCJs are able to recover nearly all of their post-yield deformation, requiring a minimum amount of repair, even after a large earthquake, proving to be smart structural elements. It was also shown that the use of SRC to repair damaged BCJs can restore its full capacity.
The application of shape memory alloys (SMAs) to the seismic response reduction of civil engineering structures has attracted growing interest due to their self-centering feature and excellent fatigue performance. The loading rate dependence of SMAs raises a concern in the seismic analysis of SMA-based devices. However, the implementation of micromechanics-based strain-rate-dependent constitutive models in structural analysis software is rather complicated and computationally demanding. This paper investigates the feasibility of replacing complex rate-dependent models with rate-independent constitutive models for superelastic SMA elements in seismic time-history analysis. Three uniaxial constitutive models for superelastic SMAs, including one rate-dependent thermomechanical model and two rate-independent phenomenological models, are considered in this comparative study. The pros and cons of the three nonlinear constitutive models are also discussed. A parametric study of single-degree-of-freedom systems with different initial periods and strength reduction factors is conducted to examine the effect of the three constitutive models on seismic simulations. Additionally, nonlinear time-history analyses of a three-story prototype steel frame building with special SMA-based damping braces are performed. Two suites of seismic records that correspond to frequent and design basis earthquakes are used as base excitations in the seismic analyses of steel-braced frames. The results of this study show that the rate-independent constitutive models, with their parameters properly tuned to dynamic test data, are able to predict the seismic responses of structures with SMA-based seismic response modification devices.
Research into the replacement of injured systems and tissue in the human body is advancing rapidly. Recently, Ti-Ni shape memory alloys have shown excellent biofunctionality related to their shape memory effect and superelasticity. In this study, the effect of an acid or an alkali treatment on the bioactivity in 49Ti-Ni and 51.5Ti-48.5Ni alloys is investigated in an effort to utilize Ti-Ni alloy as a biomaterial. In addition, the biocompatibility in a SBF solution is assessed through in vitro testing. A porous surface was formed on the surface of both alloys after a chemical treatment. According to the in vitro test, apatite formed on the surfaces of both alloys. The forming rate of apatite in the Ti-rich alloy was faster that in the Ni-rich alloy. The formation of apatite provided proof of the bioactivity of the Ti-Ni alloy. A small quantity of Ni was eluted at the initial stage, whereas Ni was not found for 12 days in the Ti-rich alloy and for 8 days in the Ni-rich alloy. In the case of the treated 51.5Ti-Ni alloy, the shape memory property was worsened but the biocompatibility was improved.
