The cryogenic nitrogen spray of a swirl injector has been numerically investigated using three dimensional LES turbulence model to analyze the dynamic characteristics under supercritical condition. To predict the precise nitrogen properties under supercritical condition, SRK equation of state, Chung's method for viscosity and thermal conductivity and Takahashi's correlation based on Fuller's theory for diffusion coefficient are implemented. The complex flow structures due to interaction between flow field and acoustic field are observed inside and outside the injector under supercritical condition. FFT, POD, and DMD techniques are employed to understand the coherent structures. By implementing the FFT, the dominant frequencies are identified inside and outside the injector. The coherent flow structures related to the dominant frequencies are visualized using the POD and DMD techniques. In addition, the DMD provides the damping coefficient which is related with the instability prediction.
Collisionless shocks with low sonic Mach numbers, M<4, are expected to accelerate cosmic ray (CR) protons via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) in the intracluster medium (ICM). However, observational evidence for CR protons in the ICM has yet to be established. Performing particle-in-cell simulations, we study the injection of protons into DSA and the early development of a nonthermal particle population in weak shocks in high ${\beta}$ plasmas. Reflection of incident protons, self-excitation of plasma waves via CR-driven instabilities, and multiple cycles of shock drift acceleration are essential to the early acceleration of CR protons in supercritical quasi-parallel shocks. We find that only in ICM shocks with $M{\geq}2.3$, a sufficient fraction of incoming protons are reflected by the overshoot in the shock electric potential and magnetic mirror at locally perpendicular magnetic fields, leading to efficient excitation of magnetic waves via CR streaming instabilities and the injection into the DSA process. Since a significant fraction of ICM shocks have M < 2.3 CR proton acceleration in the ICM might be less efficient than previously expected. This may explain why the diffuse gamma-ray emission from galaxy clusters due to proton-proton collisions has not been detected so far.
The worldwide issue of greenhouse gas reduction has recently drawn great attention to carbon capture and storage(CCS). In this study, we developed a 10,000 ton/year pilot injection plant for geological storage of carbon dioxide. Major components of the pilot plant include a pressure pump, a booster pump, and an inline heater to bring liquid carbon dioxide into its supercritical state. The test results show that the pilot plant readily achieves the injection pressure and temperature, showing satisfactory control performance. The overall power consumption is 2,000 ~ 2,500 W, more than 75% of which consumed by the pressure pump. This study will facilitate varied research on greenhouse gas reduction as the only domestically developed system for geological injection.

The single jet of decane/methylcyclohexane mixed fuel that is surrogate for kerosene was injected into supercritical environment and visualized using shadowgraph technique. The injection pressure drop of the fuel jet of Tr = 0.484 was kept constant at 0.5 MPa and the experiment was conducted above the critical point of the mixed fuel, and the reduced temperatures of the chamber was changed from 1.00 to 1.23, and the reduced pressures was 1.00 and 1.38. As an index for reducing the density of jets sprayed into the supercritical environment, the brightness intensity of the post-processed jet image was observed with the internal temperature and pressure of the chamber. It was confirmed that the decrease in the brightness intensity of the jet when the temperature inside the chamber increased, and when the pressure inside the chamber was higher at the same temperature, the decrease in the brightness intensity of the jet was delayed. When the pressure inside the chamber is high, it is thought that the change in brightness intensity is delayed due to the increase in the pseudo-critical temperature of the fuel and the increase in the temperature required to reduce the density of the fuel jet.
As part of basic studies of monitoring carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) storage using electrical and seismic surveys, laboratory experiments have been conducted to measure resistivity and P-wave velocity changes due to the injection of $CO_2$ into water-saturated sandstone. The rock sample used is a cylinder of Berea sandstone. $CO_2$ was injected under supercritical conditions (10 MPa, $40^{\circ}C$). The experimental results show that resistivity increases monotonously throughout the injection period, while P-wave velocity and amplitude decrease drastically due to the supercritical $CO_2$ injection. A reconstructed P-wave velocity tomogram clearly images $CO_2$ migration in the sandstone sample. Both resistivity and seismic velocity are useful for monitoring $CO_2$ behaviour. P-wave velocity, however, is less sensitive than resistivity when the $CO_2$ saturation is greater than ~20%. The result indicates that the saturation estimation from resistivity can effectively complement the difficulty of $CO_2$ saturation estimations from seismic velocity variations. By combining resistivity and seismic velocity we were able to estimate $CO_2$ saturation distribution and the injected $CO_2$ behaviour in our sample.

Time-lapse electrical resistivity measurements have been made in a scale model experiment for geological $CO_2$ sequestration in aquifer. Three types of $CO_2$ injection are tested in a water tank filled with glass beads. These are $CO_2$ dissolved into filtered tap water, $CO_2$ gas, and mineral oil. The mineral oil is a substitute for liquid phase of supercritical $CO_2$. For reconstructing three-dimensional resistivity images, we measure potential differences at 32 potential dipoles on the top surface of the tank due to two current dipoles on the front and back sides. The resultant resistivity images clearly show the movement of injected $CO_2$ in aquifer.

Merger shocks with Ms < ~ 3 - 4 have been detected in galaxy clusters through radio observations of synchrotron radiations emitted from cosmic-ray (CR) electrons. The CR electrons are believed to be produced by the so-called diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at the merger shocks. To describe the acceleration of electrons, the injection into DSA has to be understood. Recent studies have showed that electrons could be energized through stochastic shock drift acceleration (SSDA), a mechanism mediated by multi-scale plasma waves at shock transition zone. However, such preacceleration process seems to be effective only at the supercritical shocks with Ms > ~ 2.3, implying that further studies should be done to explain radio relics with weaker shocks. In this talk, we present the results obtained by fully kinetic 2D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, which include pre-existing suprathermal electrons possibly ejected from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or produced by previous episodes of turbulence/shocks. The simulations indicate that the pre-existing electrons enhance the upstream plasma waves in shocks with Ms < ~ 2.3. However, the wavelength of such waves is not long enough to scatter off suprathermal electrons and energize them to the injection momentum for DSA. Hence, we conclude that preexciting suprathermal electrons alone would not solve the problem of electron acceleration at radio relic shocks.
Lab scale experiments to investigate the dissolution reaction among supercritical $CO_2$-sandstone-groundwater by using sandstones from Gyeongsang basin were performed. High pressurized cell system (100 bar and $50^{\circ}C$) was designed to create supercritical $CO_2$ in the cell, simulating the sub-surface $CO_2$ storage site. The first-order dissolution coefficient ($k_d$) of the sandstone was calculated by measuring the change of the weight of thin section or the concentration of ions dissolved in groundwater at the reaction time intervals. For 30 days of the supercritical $CO_2$-sandstone-groundwater reaction, physical properties of sandstone cores in Gyeongsang basin were measured to investigate the effect of supercritical $CO_2$ on the sandstone. The weight change of sandstone cores was also measured to calculate the dissolution coefficient and the dissolution time of 1 g per unit area (1 $cm^2$) of each sandstone was quantitatively predicted. For the experiment using thin sections, mass of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Na^+$ dissolved in groundwater increased, suggesting that plagioclase and calcite of the sandstone would be significantly dissolved when it contacts with supercritical $CO_2$ and groundwater at $CO_2$ sequestration sites. 0.66% of the original thin sec-tion mass for the sandstone were dissolved after 30 days reaction. The average porosity for C sandstones was 8.183% and it increased to 8.789% after 30 days of the reaction. The average dry density, seismic velocity, and 1-D compression strength of sandstones decreased and these results were dependent on the porosity increase by the dissolution during the reaction. By using the first-order dissolution coefficient, the average time to dissolve 1 g of B and C sandstones per unit area (1 $cm^2$) was calculated as 1,532 years and 329 years, respectively. From results, it was investigated that the physical property change of sandstones at Gyeongsang basin would rapidly occur when the supercritical $CO_2$ was injected into $CO_2$ sequestration sites.
Recent advances in recombinant DNA technology have resulted in development of many new protein drugs. Due to the unique properties of protein druges, they have to be delivered by parenteral injection Although delivery of protein drugs by other routes, such as pulmonary and nasal routes, has shown some promises, to date most protein drugs are administered by par-enteral routs. For long-term delivery of protein drugs by parenteral administration, they have been formulated into biodegradable microspheres. A number of microencapsulation methods have been developed, and the currently used microencapsulation methods are reviewed here, The microen-capsulation methods have been divided based on the method used. They are: solvent evapora-tion/extraction; phase separation (coacervation);spray drying; ionotropic gelation/polyelectrolyte complexation; interfacial polyumerization and supercritical fluid precipitation. Each method is de-scribed fro its applications, advantages, and limitations.

Radio relics in the outskirts of galaxy clusters are interpreted as synchrotron radiation due to the relativistic electrons produced via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) in shocks with low sonic Mach numbers, Ms ≤ 3 in high beta ICM plasma. Electron injection into the DSA process at such weak shocks is one of the key elements, which has yet to be fully understood. In this study, we explore the nature of kinetic microinstabilities excited in weak quasi-perpendicular shocks through 2D particle-in-cell simulations. We find Alfven-ion cyclotron (AIC), whistler, and mirror instabilities can be triggered by ion and electron temperature anisotropy in the immediate downstream of supercritical shocks with Ms > Mcrit ~ 2.3. In particular, AIC instability causes rippling of the shock surface, which in turn generates plasma waves on multi-scales and faciliates the electron preacceleration. Our results may contribute to understanding the origins of radio relics.
