  • The HTS power cable is composed of 2 layers for transmission and 1 layer for shield. The superconducting tapes of transmission layers and shield layer are wound in a cylindrical shape with a winding pitch. The radius of cylinder and the number of superconducting tapes are decided considering to the transmission current capacity and the critical current of superconducting tapes. The increasement of transmission current capacity will increase in volume of HTS cable system. In this paper, the composition method of supercondcuting power cable using the multi-cable is presented. The coated conductor tape can be wound on the smaller cylinder because it has the smaller critical bending diameter than the BSCCO tape. A small-scale cable was composed using the coated conductor tapes and a multi-cable is composed using a small-scale cable considering to transmission current capacity. Even increase of transmission current capacity, this method has advantage that the HTS superconducting power cable can be composed easily. The 22.9 kV and 154 kV superconducting power cable was composed using the presented method.

  • It is required to reduce the cost of superconducting cable to realize a superconducting DC power network that covers a wide area in order to utilize renewable energy. In this paper a new concept of innovative cable is introduced that can enhance the current-carrying capacity even though the same superconducting tape is used. Such a cable can be realized by designing an optimal winding structure in such a way that the angle between the tape and magnetic field becomes small. This idea was confirmed by preliminary experiments for a single layer model cable made of Bi-2223 tapes and REBCO coated conductors. Experiments of three and four layer cables of practical sizes were also done and it was found that the current-carrying capacity increased as theoretically predicted. If the critical current properties of commercial superconducting tapes are further improved in a parallel magnetic field, the enhancement will become pronounced and this technology will surely contribute to realization of superconducting DC power network.

  • The structure of a high-Tc superconducting power cable system is composed of these parts; (from the outer section) a liquid nitrogen cryostat, a vacuum cryostat, multi-layer high-Tc superconducting cable cores and a stabilizer and both cryostats during the stable operating period of the high-Tc superconducting power cable system are calculated by the numerical method. And the optimal conditions of the stabilizer and both cryostats, that minimize the eddy current losses, are derived from the analyzed results. The optimal results can be applied to the design and manufacture of the high-Tc superconducting power cable system.

  • Fault current limiting (FCL) cable is a kind of superconducting cable which has a function of limiting the fault current at the fault of power grid. The superconducting cable detours the fault current through its stabilizer to keep the temperature as low as possible. On the other hands, the FCL cable permits the temperature rise within some acceptable limit and the fault current is limited by the consequent increase of the resistance of superconducting cable. This kind of FCL cable is called 'resistive FCL cable' because it uses resistive impedance to limit the fault current. In this paper, we suggest a novel concept of FCL cable, which is named as 'inductive FCL cable'. The inductive FCL cable is similar as the magnetic shielding fault current limiter in its operating mechanism. The magnetic field of superconducting cable is almost perfectly shielded by the induced current at the shielding layer during its normal operation. However, at the fault condition, quench occurs at the shielding layer by the induced current higher than its critical current and the magnetic field is spread out of the shielding layer. It will induce additional inductive impedance to the superconducting cable and the inductive impedance can be increased more by installing some material with high magnetic susceptibility around the superconducting cable. We examined the feasibility of inductive FCL cable with simple elemental experiments. The current limiting performance of inductive FCL cable was estimated considering an arbitrary power grid and its fault condition.

  • This paper discusses the effects of CD type superconducting cable operation in 22.9kV multi neutral grounded distribution system during L-G fault and counterplans to power system protection. In case of using the 3-phase CD-type superconducting cable, the inductance of superconducting cable system would be decreased due to the current of shield part of superconducting cable, which is opposite direction and nearly equal value with respect to main superconductor. However, when the shield circuit system is operated in shorted state, shield current decreases faulted ground current and give effects to power system protection scheme. This study examines the phenomena of single line to ground fault case in above mentioned system using the EMTDC program and discusses the right operation method of superconducting shield.

  • Inside the existing superconducting cables, the superconducting wire carries a loss-free current, and the cable former (the stranded copper wire) bypasses the fault current to prevent damage and loss of the superconducting cable when the fault current is applied. The fault-current-limiting-type superconducting cable proposed in this paper usually carries a steady current; but in a fault state, the cable generates self-resistance that makes the fault current lower than a certain width. That is, the superconducting cable that transmitted only a low voltage and a large capacity power repetitively limits the fault current, as does a superconducting current limiter. To complete this structure, it is essential to investigate the mutual resistance relationship between the superconducting wires after applying a fault current. Therefore, in this paper, one kinds of superconducting wires (a wire without a stabilization layer) were connected parallel 4 tapes, respectively; and after applying a fault current, the current, voltage, resistance and thermal stability of the HTS thin-film wires were examined.

  • As a research activity of the project of "Verification Test of Superconducting Power Cable", we measured the AC loss of a short length superconducting power cable. The rating and the length of the cable were 22.9kV, 1,250A and 2.2m. The voltage taps for measuring the AC loss were attached to both ends of the conductor of the superconducting cable. Through the voltage taps and a lock-in amplifier we measured the in-phase component of the voltage($V_x$) with the load current(I). The AC loss was measured by multiplying the in-phase component of the voltage($V_x$) by the load current(I). The value of the AC loss of the superconducting power cable was 1.18W/m/phase/kA at 77.3K, 1atm.

  • BSCCO HTS(High Temperature Superconductor) could be applied to superconducting cable, magnet and motor, using its hight critical properties. Especially, superconducting cable has a hight possibility of practical use due to the possibility of low voltage and high capacity transmission caused by its lower power loss than copper cable. In this paper, the transport characteristics of BSCCO superconducting cable, according to the change of BSCCO superconducting cable's accident point at phase $0^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}C$, were analyzed and compared each other. Consequently, when the accident was occur the resistance of the HTS was higher at the point phase $0^{\circ}$ than $45^{\circ}$ which means it will cause much higher load on the HTS.
