The objective of present work is to investigate the performance characteristics of three-lobe Roots type supercharger for the applications of low-compression and high-expansion ration gasoline engine. A performance test was conducted to obtain the drive power, volumetric efficiency, adiabatic efficiency and the influence of performance factors of supercharger . In order to analyze the supercharging characteristics, the experiments are made on operating parameters such as the supercharger speed, pressure ration and inlet temperature on the supercharging performance of the Roots type supercharger . Based on experimental results, the drive power and flow rate of supercharger increased with supercharger speed.

This study aims at the optimal design of the screw rotor, its performance analysis, and development of a small screw supercharger which has a low noise compared with the root type supercharger. The basic theoretical equations and the basic design of the screw supercharger have been established. The optical design of the screw rotor's shape has been also performed theoretically. Also, the performance analysis technique of the designed screw rotor has been developed.

The performance of a supercharger for vehicle using solar cell attached on the exterior of a car, an auxiliary battery, and an air compressor was evaluated in this study. This supercharger is composed of a solar cell of 40W, a battery of 60 Ah, an air compressor of 17 A, 8 $kgf/cm^2$ and an air tank of 8L. It takes about 6 days to charge the battery with the solar cell and the high pressure air of 8L can be supplied about 70 times to engine intake with this battery. The intake pressure increased by about 20~40% with this supercharger. The vehicle power and accelerating performance are enhanced by 87% and 50% each in the low speed range. But the performance improved little in the high speed range because of the rather constant flow rate of air supplied by this type of supercharger.

This study aims at the optimal design of rotors and the development of screw type Supercharger of CNG-fueled engine for commercial vehicle. Based on the new rotor profile, an advanced oil free type Supercharger has been developed, which can achieve higher adiabatic efficiency and lower manufacturing cost. The performance test of screw type Supercharger has achieved high volumetric efficiency and the durability on the bench of performance test has also been established in the compact body.
One means of fulfilling $CO_2$ emission legislation is to downsize engines by boosting their power using turbochargers or mechanical superchargers. This reduces fuel consumption by decreasing the engine displacement. When a turbocharger, which is preferable to a mechanical supercharger in terms of fuel efficiency, is used, there is insufficient availability of exhaust gas energy at low engine speeds, resulting in an unfavorable engine response. Therefore, mechanically driven superchargers have increased in popularity due to their quick response to changing speeds in the transient phase. However, since a mechanical supercharger obtains its driving power from the engine, it is difficult to decrease its fuel consumption. This remains a large negative factor for superchargers, despite their excellent dynamic performance. This study aims to develop a power control concept to improve the fuel economy of a mechanical screw supercharger, which could then be used for engine downsizing.

Sensorless electric superchargers have recently been actively developed to provide a large amount of oxygen to engines in order assist the combustion process for miniaturizing the engines and improving fuel efficiency. The model-based sensorless method for surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors has a disadvantage in that the system may become unstable due to parameter variations in low-speed operation and the rapid-acceleration section. An electric supercharger requires fast response to improve the engine response delay, such as the turbocharger turbo-rack. Therefore, the responsiveness must be improved to use the model-based sensorless system. The position compensation algorithm designed in this study is controlled by converting the position error into the beta, which is the angle formed by the d-axis and the stator current during sudden speed change. In this study, we improved the response of the model-based sensorless system through the algorithm and verified the algorithm validity by applying the algorithm to an actual dual-motor supercharger.

To improve efficiency of diesel engine which requests high output recently and is used all kinds of industrial areas, this thesis experimented dynamic characteristics and exhaust gas characteristics of diesel engine installed by supercharger of correspondent output 200HP and natural inhalation diesel engine through the dynamometer and exhaust gas analyzer in same condition. As the result of experiment with natural inhalation diesel engine and diesel engine installed by supercharger, there were a few differences of output, but dynamic characteristics at high speed showed increased output and efficiency of the engine installed by supercharger. On the contrary, in exhaust gas characteristics, the model installed by supercharger showed increased exhaust gas such as $NO_X$, $O_2$, etc, but added value of exhaust gas is low if considering $CO_2$ reduction and efficiency of dynamic characteristic's increase. Based on the results, diesel engine installed by supercharger is expected to show higher economic feasibility than natural inhalation diesel than natural inhalation engine from an angle of efficiency. Keywords: 200hp class Turbocharger, Exhaust Gas, Engine Performance, Marine Diesel Engine.

A Computer program is developed for creation of a new lobe shaper for Roots-type supercharger. Numerical analyses are preformed for the flowfields in the pocket volumes formed by various lobe shapes. The governing equations for the two-dimensional, turbulent, operational processes in the housing are discretized by the control volume approach that insures the conservative characteristics to be satisfied in the calculation domain, and they are solved by a modified SIMPLE algorithm. Numerical results show that the effects of secondary flow on the leakage flow rate with the Cassini(B) lobe shape is smaller than that of Cassini(A) rotor. But the pocket volume of Cassine(B) lobe is larger than the other lobe shapes.

When a control algorithm is developed to protect automotive compressor surges, the simulation model typically selects an empirically determined look-up table. However, it is difficult for a control oriented empirical model to show surge characteristics of the super charger. In this study, a dynamic supercharger model is developed to predict the performance of a centrifugal compressor under dynamic load follow-up. The model is developed using Simulink$^{(R)}$ environment, and is composed of a compressor, throttle body, valves, and chamber. Greitzer's compressor model is used, and the geometric parameters are achieved by the actual supercharger. The simulation model is validated with experimental data. It is shown that compressor surge is effectively predicted by this dynamic compressor model under various operating conditions.
