  • High-rise buildings are increasingly viewed as having both technical and economic advantages, especially in areas of high population density. Increasingly taller buildings are being built worldwide. Increased heights entail increasing flexibility, which can result in serviceability problems associated with significant displacements and accelerations at higher floors. The purpose of this paper is to present the concept of a versatile vibration control technology (MR dampers with bracings) that can be used in super tall buildings. The proposed technology is shown to be effective, from a serviceability point of view, as well as resulting in dramatically reduced design wind loads, thus creating more resilient and sustainable buildings.

  • A much higher level of seismic performance is needed for supertall buildings due to increased demands for their functional continuities and the recognized needs for their continuing emergence in metropolitan areas. This paper analyzes, compares, and contrasts responses recorded during the 2011 Tohoku-oki Earthquake of different supertall buildings featuring conventional and vibration-controlled engineering systems. The superior performance and advantage of the latter are pointed out, and the typical dynamic properties, response characteristics, and effects on the secondary system are discussed. Ongoing efforts to enhance vibration control performance are described, covering the development of specifications, use of performance curves and targeted displacement design, and methods to find appropriate locations of damper installation resulting in a minimized amount of dampers.

  • An installation of the construction lift has a few limitations by many constrains and these have influences on labor productivity, that can be changed by vertical-transportation management. In the super-tall building construction, a management of construction lift operation is one of the most important factor, but existing methodologies depend on skilled practitioners' experiences. And it is true that the expertise resulted by the experiences does not transfer to the next generation. This study is a part of lifting-management simulation development which aims at the optimal construction lift management. A proposed algorithm is focus on lifting time calculation considering an acceleration capability. This research evaluates the result accuracy using comparative analysis on simulation result and field measuring time.

  • This paper summarizes the structural concept and design of the "Nakanoshima Festival Tower West" in Osaka, Japan, which is 200m high and has a super-high damping system. Its superstructure is mainly composed of a central core and outer tube frames. It has a bottom truss structure at the boundary between the low-rise and mid-rise sections of the building, where the column arrangement is changed. Besides, the high-rise section of the building has a neck truss structure. These truss structures smoothly transfer the axial forces of the columns and reduce the flexural deformations induced by horizontal loads. Oil dampers with extremely high damping capacity are installed in the rigid walls named the "Big Wall Frames" of the low-rise section. Moreover, many braces and damping devices are well arranged in the center core of each story. The damping effects of these devices ensure that all structural members are remain within the elastic range and that story drifts are within 1/150 in large earthquakes. This super-high damping structure in the low-rise section is named the "Damping Layer". The whole structural system is named the "Super Damping Structure". The whole structural systems enhance the building's safety, comfort and Business Continuity Planning (BCP) under large earthquakes.

  • This paper addresses the key technologies for supertall building construction based on the Lotte World Tower project in Korea. First, the mega-mat foundation construction technologies are shown, including ultra-low heat concrete, heat of hydration control programs, and the logistics plan. Then, high strength concrete technologies of 50~80 MPa are introduced and discussed within the context of the highest pumping record in Korea at 514.25 meters. Structural design concepts of gravity load and lateral force resistance systems are introduced, along with surveying systems using GNSS and temporary installation plans of special heavy equipment like tower cranes, hoists, and high pressure concrete pumps. If it is possible to coordinate these key technologies and others, optimizing for the building's design and construction, supertall building construction can be successfully completed.

  • Shanghai Tower is a super high-rise building of 632 m height with 'mega frame-core- outrigger truss' structure system. Due to the complexity and irregularity of structure, shaking table test was carried out to investigate its seismic performance. A 1/40 scaled test model was designed, built and tested on shaking table under earthquake of small, moderate and large levels. The experimental results showed that the structure can meet the requirements of Chinese codes and reach scheduled performance objectives. Elastic and plastic time-history analysis on the structure were carried out and the results were compared to experimental results. Based on the research results some suggestions were proposed to contribute favorable effect on the seismic capacity of the structure.

  • The concept of vertical living has been hailed as a solution to control fast growth and urbanization of cities worldwide. As super tall residential projects become more common and sustainability considerations become more necessary, their efficiency has been called into question. How do vertical residential developments compare with suburban homes? What are the environmental advantages and disadvantages of vertical communities? Is there a middle ground? We present the results from an AS+GG study that compares the environmental performance of different housing typologies ranging from a 215 supertall building to single family residences, including several scales in between. Our samples comprise 2,000 residential units per type and include the infrastructure needed to support them. We analyzed land use, energy use, and lifecycle carbon emissions for each typology. The results show that different typologies perform better depending on the parameter being assessed. We discuss these findings; assess overall performance, and present conclusions.

  • To accommodate urban concentration of population, multi-purpose super-tall buildings have been introduced, but they induce many travel demands causing regional traffic problems. While several travel demand management policies such as transit promotion or parking limits are presented to alleviate such problems, transportation infrastructure are still insufficient to meet high demands. In this study, super-tall buildings are categorized by scale and purpose, then mode-specific derived demand is estimated using modal share of each category. Optimal transportation infrastructure level is determined by condition-based average changing amount yielded by street network delay (in case of road) or the number of transit routes (in case of transit).

  • Korean metropolises are choked by lack of green space to attain the limit of horizontal expansion. The alternative plan is trying total expansion that the green zone and road are made from the rest site by high-rise buildings. And high-rise building can solve indiscriminate development to attain the limit situation. The building of landmark can be the image of the nation and the pride of the citizen. The relaxing the height restriction of government can be whole nation's interests. Appearing high-rise building in overpopulated city is the subject of a generation and this trend cannot be avoided.
