The developments on desulfurization have been focused on the application to the advanced power generation systems such as integrated gasification-combined cycle (lGCC) and the gasification-molten carbonate fuel ceil (MCFC). The gas produced from the coal gasification contains H$_2$S and other hazardous sulfur compounds, which must be removed to avoid corrosion and environmental problems. (omitted)
The flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs) (EC 1.14. 13.8) are NADPH-dependent flavoenzymes that catalyze oxidation of soft nucleophilic heteroatom centers in a range of structurally diverse compounds including foods, drugs, pesticides, and other xenobiotics. In humans, FMOl appears to be the predominant form expressed in human fetal liver. cDNA-expressed human FMO and human liver microsomal FMO have been observed to N- and S-oxy-genate nucleophilic nitrogen- and sulfur-containing drugs and chemicals, respectively. In the present study, FMOl can be expressed in the baculovirus expression vector system at level of 2.68 nmol FMOl/mg of membrane protein. This isoform was examined for its capacity to metabolize methimazole to its S-oxide using thiocholine assay. Kinetic studies of its S-oxide by recombinant human FMO1 result in Km of 7.66 $\mu$M and Vmax of 17.79 nmol/min/mg protein.

The reaction of sulfur dioxide with cupric oxide supported on zeolite was investigated over a temperature range of $250{\sim}450^{{\circ}C$. After the completion of the $SO_2$ removal reaction, the cupric sulfate produced was regenerated to copper by hydrogen or LPG. The experimental results showed that the removal efficiency of $SO_2$ was improved with temperature increase and with $SO_2$ inlet concentration decrease. The reaction of $SO_2$ with CuO/Zeolite was well explained by the shrinking unreacted core model using first order chemical reaction control and diffusion control. THe reaction rate constant and the effective diffusivity were respectively as follows: 1k (cm/s) = 2.519 exp[-10991 (cal/mol)/RT] $De(cm^2/s) = 2.06 \times 10^{-5} exp[-8380 (cal/mol)/RT]$
Fatigue crack growth test or low alloy steel was performed in high temperature water. Test parameters were dissolved oxygen content. loading frequency and R-ratio ($P_{min}/P_{max}$). Since the sulfur content or the steel was low, there were no environmentally assisted cracks (EAC) in low dissolved oxygen(DO) water. At high DO, the crack growth rate at R = 0.5 tests was much increased due to environmental effects and the crack growth rate depended on loading frequency and maximized at a critical frequency. On the other hand, R = 0.7 test results showed an anomalous decrease of the crack growth rate as much different behavior from the R = 0.5. The main reason of the decrease may be related to the crack tip closure effect. All the data could be qualitatively understood by effects of oxide rupture and anion activity at crack tip.
Mo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method in various conditions to identify the states of surface Mo species. TPR (Temperature-Programmed Reduction) and Raman spectroscopy were applied to analyze the surface Mo species. TPR analysis revealed that MoO3 was reduced to Mo through MoO2, the intermediate state and the increase of Mo loading enhanced the reducibility of Mo oxide till the formation of monolayer coverage. High temperature calcination induced oxygen defects in MoO3 giving their unstable states for easier reduction. Raman spectroscopy analysis showed that the increase of Mo loading induced the polymeric Mo oxide.
Bioheavy oil, which is expanding its range of use as an alternative fuel to reduce environmental pollutant emissions, has a lot of difficulty in combustion due to its low emission of pollutants such as nitrogen oxide (NOx) and sulfur oxide (SOx), while its low dissipation and high oxygen content in fuel. many studies have been conducted on change in characteristics by mixing rate combustion characteristics and combustion reactions, but there have been no specific and effective studies on the composition of control system, optimization of control, development of logic for mixing and burning, minimizing environmental pollutantants discharge. In this study, we intend to consider systemmatic and empirical considerations on the composition, logic development, solve the problem of manual switching of bioler master due to excessive oxygen content and tuning of the control system for optimal combustion of bioheavy oil.

The study was performed to investigate the effects of gaseous imission of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on the growth of rice plant under stressed field conditions. The plants were cultivated in normal paddy fields where are 88 industrial plants operating with 285 smoke stacks emitting pollutants. There has been a number of reported studies (1, 3, 11, 19, 20) which deal with rice plant damages by air pollution under a simulated exposure experimental condition. Furthermore, these experiments were conducted to examine effects of a single pollutant on the plant. Furthermore, these experiments were conducted to examine effects of a single pollutant on the plant. In korea, however, there is no study reported in literature with respect to the in-situ dose-response relationship between rice pant reduction in yields and air pollution. This study is specifically dealt with multiple effects of sulfur dioxde and hydrogen fluoride on various plant growth indicators such as leaf damage, culm height, weight of grain, panicles per hill, spikelets per panicle and percent fertility. It appears that there is a good correlation between ambient concentrations of sulfur oxides and sulfur contents found in leaves with an average correlation coefficient of 0.868 within a 1% significance level. It is interesting to note that a better multiple correlation was found between percent leaf damage and sulfur and fluoride contentd found in leaf with a significance of 1% level. The yearly correlation coefficient ranges from 0.963 to 0.987 with an average being 0.971. It is, therefore, believed that a percent leaf damage may serve as a single indicator of pollutional damages to rice plant cultivating in fields. Regarding other factors to the diminution of rice plant growth in polluted atmosphere, it appears that a significant correlation to culm length and dry weight of grain with a 1% significance level whereas T/R ratio has a good correlation with lead damage within 5% significance level. An evaluation of data observed has demonstrated that both panicles per hill and percent fertility are significantly affected by air pollutants. As expected, hydrogen fluoride has more effects than sulfur oxide. It is, however, interesting to note that spikelets per panicles has slightly been affected while no indication of effects on 1000-grain-weight has been observed. This may lead to a conclusion that a reduction in yield of rice under polluted field conditions may have more been caused by the diminution of panicles per hill and percent fertility rather than by the diminution of spikelets per panicle and grain weight.
Reactive adsorption desulfurization (RADS) experiments were conducted over a series of commercial metal oxide supports ($Al_2O_{3-}$, $SiO_{2-}$, $TiO_{2-}$ and $ZrO_{2-}$) supported Ni/ZnO adsorbents. The adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in order to find out the influence of specific types of surface chemistry and structural characteristics on the sulfur adsorptive capacity. The desulfurization performance of all the studied adsorbents decreased in the following order: Ni/ZnO-$TiO_2$ > Ni/ZnO-$ZrO_2$ > Ni/ZnO-$SiO_2$ > Ni/ZnO-$Al_2O_3$. Ni/ZnO-$TiO_2$ shows the best performance and the three hour sulfur capacity can achieve 12.34 mg S/g adsorbent with a WHSV of $4h^{-1}$. Various characterization techniques suggest that weak interaction between active component and support component, high dispersion of NiO and ZnO, high reducibility and large total Lewis acidity of the adsorbents are important factors in achieving better RADS performance.

The reduction of $SO_2$ to elemental sulfur by CO over a series of iron niobate with nominal Nb/Fe atomic ratios of 1/0, 10/1, 5/1, 1/1, 1/5, 1/10 and 0/1 was studied with a flow fixed-bed reactor. Strong synergistic phenomena in catalytic activity and selectivity were observed for the iron niobate catalysts, and the best catalytic performance was observed for the catalyst with Fe/Nb atomic ratio of 1/1. The active phase of the activated iron niobate catalysts was identified to be $FeS_2$ using XRD and XPS. Selective reduction of $SO_2$ by CO was followed by the COS intermediate mechanism.
To assess community structure and diversity of archaea, a clone sequencing analysis based on an archaeal 16S rRNA gene was conducted at three sediment depths of the continental slope and Ulleung Basin in the East Sea. A total of 311 and 342 clones were sequenced at the slope and basin sites, respectively. Marine Group I, which is known as the ammonia oxidizers, appeared to predominate in the surface sediment of both sites (97.3% at slope, 88.5% at basin). In the anoxic subsurface sediment of the slope and basin, the predominant archaeal group differed noticeably. Marine Benthic Group B dominated in the subsurface sediment of the slope. Marine Benthic Group D and Miscellaneous Crenarchaeotal Group were the second largest archaeal group at 8-9 cm and 18-19 cm depth, respectively. Marine Benthic Group C of Crenarchaeota occupied the highest proportion by accounting for more than 60% of total clones in the subsurface sediments of the basin site. While archaeal groups that use metal oxide as an electron acceptor were relatively more abundant at the basin sites with manganese (Mn) oxide-enriched surface sediment, archaeal groups related to the sulfur cycle were more abundant in the sulfidogenic sediments of the slope. Overall results indicate that archaeal communities in the Ulleung Basin show clear spatial variation with depth and sites according to geochemical properties the sediment. Archaeal communities also seem to play a significant role in the biogeochemical carbon (C), nitrogen (N), sulfur (S), and metal cycles at each site.
