As regional air pollution gets worse by the sulfur oxides emitted from various types of vessels passing through the many countries, the International Maritime Organization establishes the emission control areas and regulates sulfur dioxide in those areas. In order to satisfy these regional regulations, the fuel selection method and the exhaust gas post-treatment device are applied to the ships. Due to the economic reasons, the post-treatment method of exhaust gas for reducing the amount of sulfur oxides discharged is mainly preferred. The scrubber which is dominantly used in the ships are the spray type system where the sprayed liquid drops used for capturing the soluble sulfur dioxides in the exhaust gas. The performance of the spray type system depends on the size distribution of the sprayed droplets. In order to evaluate this performance, we designed counterflow type scrubber and cyclone scrubber and evaluated the desulfurization efficiency and the amount of droplet evaporation according to the size of each droplet by using computational fluid dynamics. The Eulerian-Eulerian analysis method was used because the scrubber had a gas-liquid two-phase flow inside the scrubber. When the diameter of the droplet was $100{\mu}m$, $300{\mu}m$, $500{\mu}m$ and $700{\mu}m$. As a result, both of scrubbers showed high desulfurization efficiency and low evaporation amount at $500{\mu}m$ and $700{\mu}m$.
We, for the first time, retrieved sulfur dioxide (SO2) vertical column density (VCD) in industrial and volcanic areas from TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) using the Principle component analysis(PCA) algorithm. Furthermore, SO2 VCDs retrieved by the PCA algorithm from TROPOMI raw data were compared with those retrieved by the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) algorithm (TROPOMI Level 2 SO2 product). In East Asia, where large amounts of SO2 are released to the surface due to anthropogenic source such as fossil fuels, the mean value of SO2 VCD retrieved by the PCA (DOAS) algorithm was shown to be 0.05 DU (-0.02 DU). The correlation between SO2 VCD retrieved by the PCA algorithm and those retrieved by the DOAS algorithm were shown to be low (slope = 0.64; correlation coefficient (R) = 0.51) for cloudy condition. However, with cloud fraction of less than 0.5, the slope and correlation coefficient between the two outputs were increased to 0.68 and 0.61, respectively. It means that the SO2 retrieval sensitivity to surface is reduced when the cloud fraction is high in both algorithms. Furthermore, the correlation between volcanic SO2 VCD retrieved by the PCA algorithm and those retrieved by the DOAS algorithm is shown to be high (R = 0.90) for cloudy condition. This good agreement between both data sets for volcanic SO2 is thought to be due to the higher accuracy of the satellite-based SO2 VCD retrieval for SO2 which is mainly distributed in the upper troposphere or lower stratosphere in volcanic region.

Background: Effect of sulfur dioxide($SO_2$) exposure on airway is well known but little about the effect of $SO_2$ exposure on lung parenchyme. This study is to determine if short tenn exposure to $SO_2$ in concentration commonly found in industrialized environment cause potentially harmful effect on the lung parenchyme, and to evaluate the exposure time-response relationship between short tenn exposure to $SO_2$ and the inflammatory response in mouse lung. Method: 5ppm $SO_2$ gas was used and 48 mice were grouped into control(10), 30(9), 60(11), and 120 minute exposure(18) group. In each group, bronchoalveolar lavage(BAL) was done immediately after and at 1,2,3 days after exposure. Histological examination was performed in control and 120 minute exposure group. Results: 1) Cell response in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. In 30 and 60 minute exposure group, compared to the control group, lymphocyte count has significantly increased(p<0.05) at 1 day after exposure but did not differ at 2 days after exposure. In 120 minute exposure group, also compared to the control group, there was significant increase in total cell, macrophage, and lymphocyte count at 1 day after exposure, (p<0.05) which lasted for 2 days but did not significantly differ at 3 days after exposure. 2) Histological findings in 120 minute exposure group. In the airway, mild epithelial cell damage and ciliary loss were noted but there was no evidence of inflammatory cell infiltration. Interstitial inflammatory infiltration was noted at 1 day after exposure, which lasted for 3 days after exposure and there was no evidence of edema or fibrosis in the interstitium Conclusions: These data indicate potentially noxious effect of $SO_2$ on the lung parenchyme as well as the airway at exposure level that are regarded as relatively safe, and the duration of injury depends on the exposure time.
The effects of combination treatment with sulfur dioxide generating pad ($SO_2$ pad) and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on grape quality were examined under simulated exporting condition and actual export to Los Angeles, USA. The 'Campbell Early' grape harvested in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi was precooled at $0^{\circ}C$, selected and packaged at $10^{\circ}C$, and stored at $0^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. The treatment was as follows: general export packaging (control), only $SO_2$ pad, combination of $SO_2$ pad and MAP (perforated polyethylene film, $SO_2$ pad+MA). In case of control and only $SO_2$ pad under simulated exporting condition, the grape quality changes with storage time were decrease in hardness and brush length, increase in stem browning, and increased in shattering rate. The treatment of $SO_2$ pad+MA was the most effective in preserving the grape quality since $SO_2$ concentration inside the package remained around 2.9 ppm by MA film. Grape exports from harvest to local distribution of the USA took 30 days, and only $SO_2$ pad+MA package showed no fungus, maintained brush length and rachis color, and was lowest at 4.0% of shattering rate since the concentration of $SO_2$ in the package was about 4.0 ppm. As a result, it was considered that the combination of $SO_2$ pad and MA was the most effective way to maintain freshness of grape during long-term marine transportation and extend the shelf-life in exporting countries.

In this present study, we investigated the effect of the offset correction factor calculation method on the sulfur dioxide (SO2) column density in the SO2 retrieval algorithm of the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) launched in February 2020. The GEMS operational SO2 retrieval algorithm is the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) - Principal Component Analysis (PCA) Hybrid algorithm. In the GEMS Hybrid algorithm, the offset correction process is essential to correct the absorption effect of ozone appearing in the SO2 slant column density (SCD) obtained after spectral fitting using DOAS. Since the SO2 column density may depend on the conditions for calculating the offset correction factor, it is necessary to apply an appropriate offset correction value. In this present study, the offset correction values were calculated for days with many cloud pixels and few cloud pixels, respectively. And a comparison of the SO2 column density retrieved by applying each offset correction factor to the GEMS operational SO2 retrieval algorithm was performed. When the offset correction value was calculated using radiance data of GEMS on a day with many cloud pixels was used, the standard deviation of the SO2 column density around India and the Korean Peninsula, which are the edges of the GEMS observation area, was 1.27 DU, and 0.58 DU, respectively. And around Hong Kong, where there were many cloud pixels, the SO2 standard deviation was 0.77 DU. On the other hand, when the offset correction value calculated using the GEMS data on the day with few cloud pixels was used, the standard deviation of the SO2 column density slightly decreased around India (0.72 DU), Korean Peninsula (0.38 DU), and Hong Kong (0.44 DU). We found that the SO2 retrieval was relatively stable compared to the SO2 retrieval case using the offset correction value on the day with many cloud pixels. Accordingly, to minimize the uncertainty of the GEMS SO2 retrieval algorithm and to obtain a stable retrieval, it is necessary to calculate the offset correction factor under appropriate conditions.
The formation of complexes between SO2 and acetic acid was studied theoretically. The ab initio and DFT calculations were performed with MP2 and B3LYP methods using 6-311++G(d,p), aug-cc-pVDZ and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets. Six stable complexes were identified, and three stable bidentate complexes, C1, C2 and C3, were formed between SO2 and syn-acetic acid, which is more stable form of acetic acid. Anti-acetic acid also form three complexes, C4, C5 and C6, with SO2. C4 is bidentate and C5, C6 are monodentate complexes, which are less stable. The most stable complex, C1 has S⋯O=C and O⋯H-O interactions, and the S⋯O and O⋯H distances are less than the sum of van der Waals radii. The vibrational frequencies of complexes were calculated and were compared with those of monomers. The frequency shifts after formation of complex were found, and the overall pattern of frequency shifts relative to monomers is similar among the six complexes.
Studies were carried out to determine the effect of sulfur dioxide on leaf injury and yield of ten soybean cultivars. Plants were fumigated with 2.0 ppm of $SO_2$ for 4 or 8 h in a closed-top field chamber. In the comparison of foliar injury, Paldalkong and Eunhakong were more susceptible to $SO_2$ than Bogwangkong, Jangsukong, and Jangkeungkong. Correlations between chlorophyll contents, peroxidase activity, and stomatal resistance of leaves and foliar susceptibility were insignificant. However, significant correlations $(r=-0.611^{\ast})$ were found between superoxide dismutase activity and foliar injury rates. Dry weight, number of pods and total grains were significantly reduced by $SO_2$ fumigation but plant height, number of nods and weight of 100 grains were not affected. Yield reduction rates were higher in Eunhakong and Paldalkong than in Bogwangkong and Jangkeungkong. A liniar relationship was found between foliar injury rate and the percent crop loss with a significant coefficient of b=-1.17 in the susceptible cultivar of Paldalkong, but Bogwangkong, insusceptible cultivar, showed lower value of -0.165.
This study selected three types of agglomerated wood charcoal (Agglomerated wood charcoal with charcoal powder, Carbonized wood briquette, Ignition-type of perforated charcoal) that are in circulation in Korea among fuel-type wood products and analyzed the fuel characteristics, harmful substance content, and emissions of air pollutants generated by combustion. The first results showed that charcoal-grilled carbon, which is the raw material of charcoal, produced higher CO than saw-billed carbon. The second result is that the emission standards of air pollutants generated by the combustion of molded wood coal are not up to the emission standards of nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides in the entire product, compared with the emission criteria of the atmospheric environment preservation method (based on 2019, carbon monoxide: 200 ppm, nitrogen oxides, 150 ppm sulfur oxides: 100 ppm), but the carbon dioxide moulding and carbon dioxide levels were not up. Based on the analysis of combustion gas generated during combustion derived from this study, future research is needed for comparing with the emission standards of pellets, which are wood products for fuel, among the existing biomass burning standards and for reducing carbon monoxide generated during incomplete combustion of agglomerated wood charcoal.

The levels of sulfites in wooden chopsticks were analyzed using two different methods, distillation-alkali titration and ion chromatography. According to the two methods, Sulfur dioxide($SO_2$) was validated by 0.6 and 0.2 ${\mu}ml$ of limit of detection(LOD), 1.8 and 0.5 ${\mu}ml$ of limit of quantification, (LOQ) and a $R^2>0.998$ for linearity, respectively. The recoveries of $SO_2$ from food simulants spiked ar levels of 100 ppm were 70.2-100.2%. 158 samples of wooden chopsticks were monitored the migrated amounts of sulfites. Sulfites were detected in 30 samples in ranged of 0.6 to 15.5 ppm. Maximum migration level, 15.5 ppm of sulfites was considered giving no harmful effect to human since it was reached 5.5% of estimated SML.
