Semi-flexible liquid crystalline polymers containing a mesogenic group and an octamethylene flexible spacer in the main chain were synthesized by solution polycondensation. The mesogenic group in the polymer consists of four aromatic rings connected by ester and ketone, ether, sulfide, methylene, sulfone, or isopropylidene linkage groups. This paper discusses effects of the central linker of the mesogenic group on polymer properties. The structures and properties of synthesized polymers were investigated by $^1H$-NMR, FT-IR, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and polarizing optical microscope (POM). Polymers having bent linkage groups exhibited low thermal transition temperatures, narrow mesophase temperature ranges, low liquid crystallinity, and good solubilities in organic solvents, while those having bulky linkage groups were amorphous and exhibited high glass transition temperatures.
Surface modification of glutaraldehyde fixed bovine pericardium (GFBP) was successfully carried out with hyaluronic acid (HA) derivatives. At first, HA was chemically modified with adipic dihydrazide (ADH) to introduce hydrazide functional group into the carboxyl group of HA backbone. Then, GFBP was surface modified by grafting HA-ADH to the free aldehyde groups on the tissue and the subsequent HA-ADH hydrogel coating. HA-ADH hydrogels could be prepared through selective crosslinking at low pH between hydrazide groups of HA-ADH and crosslinkers containing succinimmidyl moieties with minimized protein denaturation. When HAADH hydrogels were prepared at low pH of 4.8 in the presence of erythropoietin (EPO) as a model protein, EPO release was continued up to $85\%$ of total amount of loaded EPO for 4 days. To the contrary, only $30\%$ of EPO was released from HA-ADH hydrogels prepared at pH=7.4, which might be due to the denaturation of EPO during the crosslinking reaction. Because the carboxyl groups on the glucuronic acid residues are recognition sites for HA degradation by hyaluronidase, the HA-ADH hydrogels degraded more slowly than HA hydrogels prepared by the crosslinking reaction of divinyl sulfone with hydroxyl groups of HA. Following a two-week subcutaneous implantation in osteopontin-null mice, clinically significant levels of calcification were observed for the positive controls without any surface modification. However, the calcification of surface modified GFBP with HA-ADH and HA-ADH hydrogels was drastically reduced by more than $85\%$ of the positive controls. The anti-calcification effect of HA surface modification was also confirmed by microscopic analysis of explanted tissue after staining with Alizarin Red S for calcium, which followed the trend as observed with calcium quantification.
The ultrafiltration characteristics of wafer processing wastewater produced from semicon¬ductor industry was investigated for wastewater reuse. Using the pilot-scale ultrafiltration system con¬taining poly sulfone hollow fiber membranes (MWCO : 10,000, 20,000, 30,(00), the membrane performance, such as flux, rejection rate and concentration factor for flux was examined. The SDhs, turbidity, electrical conductivity and concentration of Si particles were measured, and the possibility of permeate reuse was validated from the experimental results. It was shown that the flux was recovered by the sweeping with air and water effectively. The permeate flux of 30,000 MWCO membrane was about 5 times higher than that of 10,000 and 20,000 MWCO membranes. The concentration of Si particle in the saw wastewater was analyzed 3.8-5.6 mg/$\ell$ and that of Si particle in the permeate was analyzed less than 0.2${\mu}g$/$\ell$. This means the rejection of silicon particle was over 96%.
Linear polyethers were prepared by the reaction of diphenoxide anions from 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, bis (4-hydroxylphenyl) sulfide, and bis (khydroxyphenyl) sulfone with 1,6-dibromohexane in aqueous/nitrobenzene heterogeneous phases. Tetrabutylammonium bromide was employed as a phase transfer catalyst. The polymerizations were dependent both on stirring speed and catalyst level, but only up to certain maximum values. Distribution studies demonstrated transference of diphenoxide anions from aqueous phase into nitrobenzene in the presence of the catalyst. Some of polymers were characterized with respect to their intrinsic viscosities (0.09-O.16), number average molecular weight (2400-4800)) and thermal properties. The use of a new terminology, 'phase transfer polymerization?, is proposed to differentiate this type of polymerizations from interfacial polycondensations.
In this study, to obtain good dispersity of graphene which has excellent conductivity and mechanical strength, the graphene was modified by two different methods. Then the SPAES/graphene hybrid membranes were fabricated from different graphene contents. We compared performance of composite membrane with different preparing method of graphene and content of modified graphene. The morphology of the composite membranes has been investigated using SEM. Chemical structure of modified graphene was analyzed using by FT-IR and EDX. The proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the hybrid membranes were studied with changing graphene content from 0.5 to 3.0 wt.%. The SPAES/modified graphene composite membranes showed high proton conductivity (0.21 S/cm) compared with the SPAES membrane (0.09 S/cm) at $80^{\circ}C$ and 100% relative humidity condition. And the methanol permeability was decreased linearly as the content of modified graphene increased from 0 to 1.5 wt%.
Microbial fuel cells (MFC) were operated with pig wastes and PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells) MEA (Membrane and Electrode Assembly). Performance of hydrocarbon membrane was compared with that of perfluoro membrane at MFC condition. Sulfonated-Poly(Arylene Ether Sulfone) was used as hydrocarbon membrane and Gore membrane was used as perfluoro membrane. OCV of sPAES MEA was 50mV higher than that of Gore MEA and power density of sPAES MEA was similar that of Gore MEA. Reinforcement of sPAES membrane stabilized the performance of MEA in MFC. The highest performance was obtained at temperature of $45^{\circ}C$ and with culture solution circulation rate of 50 ml/min. The highest power density was $1,100mW/m^2$ at optimum condition in MFC using pig waste.

The Montmorillonite (MMT) in the polymer matrix is expected to reduce methanol permeability due to the tortous path formed by dispersed silicate layers. However, the polymer composite membranes containing non-proton conducting inorganic particle tend to show low proton conductivity. To solve this problem, we used an ion exchange method to prepare functionalized MMT with various silane coupling agents. The modified MMT was randomly dispersed in sulfonated poly (arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) matrix to prepare SPAES/modified MMT composite membranes. The performances of hybrid membranes for DMFCs application were investigated. The SPAES/modified composite membrane showed increased proton conductivity compared with the non-modified MMT composite membrane. However, the methanol permeability of the SPAES/modified membrane was higher than that of the non-modified MMT.
Omeprazole (OMP) is a proton pump inhibitor used as an oral treatment for acid-related gastrointestinal disorders. In the liver, it is primarily metabolized by cytochrome P-450 (CYP450) isoenzymes such as CYP2C19 and CYP3A4. 5-Hyroxyomeprazole (5-OHOMP) and omeprazole sulfone (OMP-SFN) are the two major metabolites of OMP in human. Cimetidine (CMT) inhibits the breakdown of drugs metabolized by CYP450 and reduces, the clearance of coad-ministered drug resulted from both the CMT binding to CYP450 and the decreased hepatic blood flow due to CMT. Phenobarbital (PB) induces drug metabolism in laboratory animals and human. PB induction mainly involves mammalian CYP forms in gene families 2B and 3A. PB has been widely used as a prototype inducer for biochemical investigations of drug metabolism and the enzymes catalyzing this metabolism, as well as for genetic, pharmacological, and toxicological investigations. In order to investigate the influence of CMT and PB on the metabolite kinetics of OMP, we intravenously administered OMP (30 mg/kg) to rats intraperitoneally pretreated with normal saline (5 mL/kg), CMT (100 mg/kg) or PB (75 mg/kg) once a day for four days, and compared the pharmacokinetic parameters of OMP. The systemic clearance ($CL_{t}$) of OMP was significantly (p<0.05) decreased in CMT-pretreated rats and significantly (p<0.05) increased in PB-pretreated rats. These results indicate that CMT inhibits the OMP metabolism due to both decreased hepatic blood flow and inhibited enzyme activity of CYP2C19 and 3A4 and that PB increases the OMP metabolism due to stimulation of the liver blood flow and/or bile flow, due not to induction of the enzyme activity of CYP3A4.
In this research, by using the fluorine gas, the poly(ether sulfone) (PES), the polysulfone (PSf), and the poly-vinylidenefluoride (PVDF) membranes were modified to improve the performance of the optional Gas-Liquid Contactor The SEM, surface contact angle, XPS, and the water transmission minimum pressure test was performed in order to examine the characteristics of which is surface modified. As a result of looking into the surface morphology of from the SEM measurement, we could know that the roughness of the membrane surface increased as the fluorine processing time increased. $-CH_2$, and the perfluoro group of $-CH_3$ were chemically combined with the surface fluorine conversion film surface and the hydrophobicity was exposed to be increased. Moreover, we could know that as the surface fluorinated processing time increased from the surface contact angle and water transmission minimum pressure test, the measured value increased and the overall characteristics were improved.
Oxidative desulfurizaton of model sulfur compounds and Industrial diesel fuel(LCO; Light Cycle Oil) over Ti-grafted SBA-15 catalyst was studied in a batch reactor with tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide(TBHP) as oxidant. Effects of Ti loading, TBHP/Sulfur mole ratio, reaction temperature on ODS activity and kinetic parameters were investigated. Ti-grafted SBA-15 catalyst showed higher sulfur removal activity in the oxidative desulfurization reaction of refractory sulfur compounds(DBT and 4, 6-DMDBT) and LCO, suggesting that Ti-grafted SBA-15 catalyst could be a good candidate for ODS catalyst.
