혈소판 농축 혈장을 이용한 골 이식술과 Calcium sulfate를 이용한 조직유도 재생술이 골연하낭의 치료에 미치는 효과에 관한 비교 연구 (The Comparative Study of Bone Grafts using Platelet Rich Plasma and Calcium Sulfate Barrier for the Regeneration of Infrabony Defects)

  • Bone graft using growth factors and guided tissue regeneration have been used for the regeneration of infrabony defects which caused by periodontal disease. Calcium sulfate which is one of the resorbable barrier materials used for guided tissue regeneration. Platelet rich plasma which is a easy method to obtain the growth factors had many common points but, platelet rich plasma was still studying. This study was the comparative study between bone graft using platelet rich plasma and guided tissue regeneration using calcium sulfate barrier material in clinical view. For the study, 28 sites(2 or 3 wall infrabony defects) were treated. 14 infrabony defects were received surgical implantation of BBP-calcium sulfate composite with a calcium sulfate barrier and the others received BBP mixed with platelet rich plasma. Clinical outcome was accessed 3 and 6 months of postsurgery. 1. There was no statistical difference between CS group and PRP group in pocket depth, gingival recession, clinical attachment level, and probing bone level at baseline. 2. There was statistically significant reduction in probing depth, clinical attachment level, and probing bone level at 3 and 6 months postsurgery(p<0.05). 3. In the probing depth and clincial attachment level PPR group had less improvement than CS group, but there was no statistically difference at 3 and 6 months postsurgery. 4. In the recession PPR group had less recession than CS group, but there was no statistically difference at 3 and 6 months postsurgery. 5. In the probing bone level PPR group had less improvement than CS group, but there was no statistically difference at 6 months postsurgery. In conclusion bone graft using platelet rich plasma and guided tissue regeneration using calcium sulfate barrier showed similar clinical improvement for the treatment of 2 or 3 wall infrabony defects.

  • The smouldering combustibility of cellulose insulation treated with boric acid-borax-aluminium sulfate as combustion retardants are examined by cigarette ignition method and electrical cardrige heater method. The effectiveness of Aluminium sulfate as a third combustion are acceptable both smouldering resistance and flame resistance at 18% level of all examined formulation. As the proportion of Aluminium sulfate in the formulation was increased, the flame resistance of cellulose insulation was improved.

  • The alveolar bone remodeling is essential in tooth movement by orthodontic forces. The collagen and chondroitin sulfate are acting as an important roles in bone remodeling. This study was performed to measure out the quantity of the collagen and chondroitin sulfate in the alveolar bone of rats applied by experimental orthodontic forces. The 150 Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into the $PGE_2$ treated group, indomethacin treated group and the normal group. A 80gm force rubber band was used as a orthodontic appliance between upper incisors and right upper 1st molar, and left side of experimental rats with no appliance was regarded as a control side. The samples of alveolar bones were obtained from pressure and tension sites in all three groups. respectively, and in control sides, too. The results were as follows. 1. The change in total collagen remains stable in both pressure and tension sites of all three groups, compared with control side by the time consuming. 2. The change in soluble collagen showed the most highest level in tension site, lowest level in pressure site of $PGE_2$ treated group in 5th. experimental day. 3. The change in chondroitin sulfate showed the most highest level in pressure site, lowest level in tension site of $PGE_2$ treated group in 5th. experimental day. 4. In indomethacin treated group, the change of soluble collagen and chondroitin sulfate showed small range of variance compared with $PGE_2$ treated and normal group.

Recovery of Sodium Sulfate from Farm Drainage Salt and Using It in Direct Dyeing of Cotton - Analysis of Color Difference -

  • Agricultural drainage salt generated during irrigation of crops in San Joaquin Valley, California, exceeds 600,000 tons annually and cumulates in the field in a rapid rate. As a result, the waste is taking out more farmlands for salt storage and disposal, imposing serious concerns to environment and local agricultural industry. In searching for a potential solution to reduce or eliminate the waste, this research explored feasibility of producing a value -added product, sodium sulfate, from the waste and utilizing the product in textile dyeing. The results indicated that sodium sulfate could be produced from the salt and could be purified by a recrystalization method in a temperature range within the highest and lowest daily temperatures in summer in the alley. The recovered sodium sulfate samples, with purities ranging from 67% to 99.91, were compared with commercially available sodium sulfate in direct dyeing of cotton fabrics. The salt samples recovered from Mendata, California (〉98.8% sodium sulfate) cause little color difference in the dyeing with selected direct dyes, and the purified salt (Ⅲ) (99.91% sodium sulfate) is more applicable for direct dyeing of cotton fabrics if it has no other toxic effects. The recovered sodium sulfate from certain areas in the valley could not be employed in direct dyeing due to the high level of impurities in it.

  • Periodontal regeneration refers to the restoration of bone, cementum and periodontal ligament to their original levels before damage from periodontal disease process. Various surgical techniques to the promotion of periodontal regeneration have been used. Bone graft and guided tissue regeneration have used for the regeneration of furcation involvements which caused by periodontal disease. Fibrin adhesive is agents that have been shown to be effective in periodontal regeneration and biological carrier. Calcium sulfate which is one of the resorbable barrier materials has used for guided tissue regeneration. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical effects between bone graft using fibrin adhesive and calcium sulfate barrier in the mandibular class II furcation involvement. For the study, twenty-six class II furcation involved teeth were surgically treated. 13 furcation defects(test group) were treated with bonegraft and fibrin adhesive and the others(control group) were treated with bone graft and calcium sulfate barrier. Pocket depth, clinical attachment level and gingival recession were measured at baseline, postoperative 3 and 6 months. The results of the study are as follows: 1. The change of pocket depth and clinical attachment level in both groups was decreased significantly at 3, 6 months than at baseline(p<0.05). 2. The change of gingival recession in both groups was increased significantly at 3, 6 months than at baseline(p<0.05). 3. The change of pocket depth and clinical attachment level in both groups was decreased at 3, 6 months, and the change of gingival recession in both groups was increased at 3, 6 months but there were no statistically or clinically significant differences with both groups. 4. The significant reduction of the pocket depth and clinical attachment level exhibited marked changes at 3 months in both groups. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that there are no statistically or clinically significant differences between fibrin adhesive and calcium sulfate barrier in the treatment of class II furcations using xenograft.

구기자나무(Lycium chinense Mill.)로의 rolC유전자 도입에 미치는 요인 (Factors Affecting Introduction of rolC Gene in Lycium chinense Mill.)

  • 효과적인 형질전환 시스템을 이용하여 왜화유전자인 rolC 유전자를 구기자나무로의 형질전환 시스템을 확립하였다. 침으로 자극된 엽절편을 2.0 mg/L zeatin이 함유된 3/2 MS배지에 배양하였을 때 엽표면으로부터 줄기재분화가 되었다. 그러나 여러 농도의 kanamycin sulfate와 2.0 mg/L Aeatin이 함유된 배지에 엽절편을 배양하였을 때는 kanamycin sulfate의 농도가 증가할수록 줄기 유발수가 감소하는 것을 볼 수 있었으며, 적정선발농도는 10 mg/L이었다. 엽절편은 공동배양 시간에 따라서 생존율과 줄기재분화에 매우 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 엽절편의 생존율은 dipping할 경우가 가장 좋았으며, 배양시간이 길수록 엽절편의 백색화가 관찰되었고, 생존율이 급격히 감소하는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 줄기재분확에 가장 적합한 공동배양 시간은 24시간으로 나타났다. 공시균주와 24시간 동안 공동배양한 엽절편을 10mg/L의 kanamycin sulfate와 2.0 mg/L zeatin이 함유된 줄기 유도배지에 배양한 결과, 105개의 엽절편 중 80개의 엽절편이 생존하였으며, 그 중에서 15개의 재분화된 줄기를 얻었다. 재분화된 줄기들은 형질전환여부를 판명하기 위해 1차적으로 10 mg/L kanamycin sulfate가 함유된 배지에 옮겨 4 주간 배양한 결과, 항생제에 대해서 저항성을 가진 5개의 식물체를 선발할 수 있었다. 2차적으로 rolC유전자와 NPTII 유전자 도입의 유무를 검증하기 위하여 Southern 분석을 행한 결과, 구기자의 형질전환 식물체에서 rolC 유전자 probe의 coding sequence와 동일한 것으로 생각되는 1kb위치와 NPTII probe의 coding sequence와 동일한 것으로 생각되는 2.6kb 위치에서 각각의 밴드를 확인할 수 있었다.

Adverse Reactions to Protamine Sulfate used for Heparin Neutralization in a Dog Receiving a Blood Transfusion

  • A 14-year-old castrated male ShihTzu diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) 6 months prior was referred to our clinic. The patient had been experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, poor appetite and hind limbs weakness. Hematology tests showed that he had a non-regenerative anemia. With aggressive treatment, the patient's state had gotten worse. He showed ragged breath, vomiting blood and loss of consciousness temporarily. Hematocrit maintained low level. Gastric hemorrhage was strongly suspected by hematemesis. Whole blood transfusion was performed and heparin was used as an anticoagulant. Prior to transfusion, the blood cross matching between donor and patient was performed and the result was compatible. After the transfusion was stabilized, 1 mg of protamine sulfate for each 100 units of heparin was prepared and given intravenously over 3 minutes to reverse the effects of heparin. Immediately after protamine injection, the patient conducted severe anaphylactic shock. Protamine sulfate is used to reverse the anticoagulant action of heparin in dogs and humans. The adverse reaction of protamine sulfate range from mild reaction to fetal cardiac arrest. When using protamine sulfate as heparin neutralization, it can lead to the death of a patient cause of anaphylactic shock. For this reason, the protamine sulfate should be injected slowly with antihistamine and the clinician should carefully monitor patients.

  • Copper sulfate is widely used as a fungicide and pesticide. Acute copper sulfate poisoning is rare but potentially lethal in severe cases. Copper sulfate can lead to cellular damage of red blood cells, hepatocytes, and myocytes. Toxic effects include intravascular hemolysis, acute tubular necrosis and, rhabdomyolysis. A 76-year-old man presented with vomiting and epigastric pain. He had ingested a copper-containing fungicide (about 13.5 g of copper sulfate) while attempting suicide 2 hours prior to presentation. From day 3 at the hospital, laboratory findings suggesting intravascular hemolysis were noted with increased serum creatinine level. He was treated with a chelating agent, dimercaptosuccinic acid (succimer). His anemia and acute kidney injury gradually resolved with a 19-day regimen of succimer. Our case suggests that succimer can be used for copper sulfate poisoning when other chelating agents are not available.

  • For some Korean newsprint mill, addition level of aluminum sulfate has been reduced because sulfur from aluminum sulfate has detrimental effect on the efficiency of anaerobic water treatment. At this moment, an unexpected decrease in sizing degree of TMP mixed newspaper was occurred. The phenomena means that hydrophobic substance usually originated from TMP cannot be fixed on the paper. This study focused on effect of alum and PAC on sizing of paper and contamination. Also, substitutability of PAC was discussed as a possible alternatives of aluminum sulfate under anaerobic condition of water treatment. Evaluation of sizing degree and pitch deposit potential were performed at the varied addition level of PAC and aluminum sulfate. Hydrophobic substance mainly derived from TMP could be fixed on the surface of fiber by PAC. Fines retention was not changed by replacing aluminum sulfate with PAC. Additionally, fixing of hydrophobic substance without excessive agglomeration can be enhanced by PAC with low molecular weight. Consequently, sizing degree of newspaper and contamination of recycling process of ONP can be controlled by low molecular weighted PAC.

Electrochemical Analysis of the Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion of Steels by Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria

  • We have investigated the differences between the general corrosion and microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of steels in terms of electrochemical behavior and surface phenomena. Corrosion potential of steels in the absence of SRB (sulfate-reducing bacteria) shifted to a low level and was maintained throughout the experimental period (40 days). The potential in the presence of SRB, however, shifted to a noble level after 20 days' incubation, indicating the growth of SRB biofilms on the test metal specimens and a formation of corrosion products. In addition, the color of medium inoculated with SRB changed from gray to black. The color change appeared to be caused by the formation of pyrites (FeS) as a corrosion product while no significant color change was observed in the medium without SRB inoculation. Moreover, corrosion rates of various steels tested for MIC were higher than those in the absence of SRB. This is probably because SRB were associated with the increasing corrosion rates through increasing cathodic reactions which caused reduction of sulfate to sulfide as well as formation of an oxygen concentration cell. The pitting corrosions were also observed in the SRB-inoculated medium.
