Thrust vector control using a coflow-counterflow concept is achieved by suction and blowing through a slot adjacent to a primary jet which is shrouded by a suction collar. In the present study, the flow characteristics of thrust vectoring is investigated using a numerical method. The nozzle has a design Mach number of 2.0, and the operation pressure ratio is varied to obtain various flow features of the nozzle flow. Test conditions are in the range of the nozzle pressure ratio from 6.0 to 10.0, and a suction pressure from 90kPa to 35kPa. Two-dimensional, compressible Navier-Stokes computations are conducted with RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The computational results provide an understanding of the detailed physics of the thrust vectoring process. It is found that an increase in the nozzle pressure ratio leads to increased thrust efficiency but reduces the thrust vector angle.

The design of suction muffler for compressor aims to achieve a maximum noise reduction and a minimum pressure loss. Until now, the design process has been performed experimentally rather than theoretically. In this paper, to achieve the maximum noise reduction and minimum pressure loss. we studied the effect of the shape and volume of the expansion tube of the muffler on TL and pressure drop. We made an extensive use of computer program such as SYSNOISE. FLUENT, and STAR-CD to calculate the TL and pressure distribution of suction muffler. The design of the muffler is optimized with respect to flow loss and TL. Experiments are performed to check the result of design change, which proves satisfactory results. It is expected that this process can reduce time to design a muffler in the fields.
When the suction pressure of compressor decreases under its limit, the compression ratio is increased causing the malfunctions of compressor. As the method to decrease the compression ratio, hot gas bypass system is usually adopted in heat pump system. In the hot gas bypass system, the discharged gas from the compressor is bypassed into the compressor suction, which causes the increase of suction pressure and the decrease of compression ratio. In this study, the characteristics and performances of the hot gas bypass system in heat pump was investigated experimentally with a variation of the bypass flow rate ratio. With the increase of the bypass rate ratio, the compressor suction pressure was increased, even though the total capacity and COP was decreased. From the analysis of the experimental results, the optimum pressure control algorithm was suggested in this study.

This paper dealt with numerical estimation of the pressure pulsation of the refrigerant in a suction pipe of the compressor. The behavior of the pressure pulsation was assumed to satisfy the wave equation. The boundary conditions and properties of refrigerant are necessary as input data of the simulation. The pulsating pressures at 15 points in a pipe were measured simultaneously from the pressure transducers. From the experimental data, the complex phase speed and impedance at the end of the pipe of the refrigerant were estimated using the signal processing and used as the input conditions of the numerical analysis. A commercial acoustic software was used to solve the behavior of pressure pulsation. The numerical results for the pressure pulsation in a pipe with and without expansion chamber were carried out and compared with those by experiments. Finally, numerical procedure to estimate the pressure pulsation in a pipe was established and verified.

The effect of periodic passing wake on the film-coolant flow issuing normally from a flat plate was investigated experimentally. The passing wake was generated by rotating thin circular bars. Depending on the rotational direction the test plate could be simulated as a pressure surface or a suction surface of a gas turbine blade. The phase-averaged velocity components were measured using an X-type hot-wire probe. The Reynolds number based on the free-stream velocity and injection hole diameter was 23, 500 and the velocity ratio which is the ratio of film coolant velocity to free-stream velocity was 0.5. The velocity-triangle induced by the wake was similar to that induced by the one generated at the blade trailing edge. The vertical velocity component induced by the passing wake, which approaches to the suction surface and moves away from the pressure surface, played a dominant role in the variation of the flow field. The variation in the phase-averaged velocity on the pressure surface was greater than on the suction surface, but the turbulence kinetic energy variation on the suction surface appeared larger than on the pressure surface.
The purpose of this study is to suggest the reasonable model of the caliber in suction nozzle, the pressure of suction nozzle, and the flow rate about foam system of line proportioner type using in the pumpcar. To test this, the experimental study was accomplished on the ground of the standards for the Performance Certification and Product Inspection of Foam Fire-extinguishing Chemical Mixing Machine. Aqueous Film Forming Foam in 3% and pipe type air foam nozzle with line proportioner FE 40 type were used. Test result showed that the pressure of suction nozzle within the limits between 0.25 MPa and 0.35 MPa was appropriate when the caliber in suction nozzle is 4 mm. Also, the pressure of suction nozzle within the limits between 0.45 MPa and 0.60 MPa was appropriate in the higher pressure than 4 mm when the caliber in suction nozzle is 5 mm.

Data fusion approach is investigated to avoid suction in the left ventricular assist system (LVAS) using a nonpulsatile pump. LVAS requires careful control of pump speed to support the heart while preventing suction in the left ventricle and providing proper cardiac output at adequate perfusion pressure to the body. Since the implanted sensors are usually unreliable for long-term use, a sensorless approach is adopted to detect suction. The pump model is developed to provide the load coefficient as a necessary signal to the data fusion system without the implanted sensors. The load coefficient of the pump mimics the pulsatility property of the actual pump flow and provides more comparable information than the pump flow after suction occurs. Four signals are generated from the load coefficient as inputs to the data fusion system for suction detection and a neural fuzzy method is implemented to construct the data fusion system. The data fusion approach has a good ability to classify suction status and it can also be used to design a controller for LVAS.
This paper presents a kinematic limit analysis for passive earth pressure of rigid retaining structures considering the unsaturation of the backfill. Particular emphasis in the current work is focused on the effects of the spatial change in the degree of saturation on the passive earth pressure under different steady-infiltration/evaporation conditions. The incorporation of change of effective unit weight with degree of saturation is the main contribution of this study. The problem is formulated based on the log-spiral failure model rather than the linear wedge failure model, in which both the spatial variations of suction and soil effective unit weight are taken into account. Parametric studies, which cover a wide range of flow conditions, soil types and properties, wall batter, back slope angle as well as the interface friction angle, are performed to investigate the effects of these factors on the passive pressure and the corresponding shape of potential failure surfaces in the backfill. The results reveal that the flow conditions have significant effects on the suction and unit weight of the clayey backfill, and hence greatly impact the passive earth pressure of retaining structures. It is expected that present study could provide an insight into evaluation of the passive earth pressure of retaining structures with unsaturated backfills.
A series of element tests with different drainage conditions and strain rates were performed on compacted unsaturated non-plastic silt in unconfined conditions. Soil samples were compacted at water contents from dry to wet of optimum with the degree of saturation varying from 24 to 59.5% while maintaining the degree of compaction at 80%. The tests performed were shear infiltration tests in which specimens had constant net confining pressure, pore air pressure was kept drained and constant, just before the shear process pore water pressure was increased (and kept constant afterwards) to decrease matric suction and to start water infiltration. In constant water content tests, specimens had constant net confining pressure, pore air pressure was kept drained and constant whereas pore water pressure was kept undrained. As a result, the matric suction varied with increase in axial strain throughout the shearing process. In both cases, maximum shear strength was obtained for specimens prepared on dry side of optimum moisture content. Moreover, the gradient of stress path was not affected under different strain rates whereas the intercept of failure was changed due to the drainage conditions implied in this study.

In this study, a series of column test as a way in order to make up for the weakness point of the conventional acceleration method were conducted to both propose the suction board drain method and grapes the specific improvement character of this method as a result of a sort of plastic drain board and a phase of vacuum pressure conditions. On this occasion, the study focused on computing the effective factors of the fittest Suction board drain method affected by each condition through confirming the settlement generated during the test, the water content reduction and stress increase effect occurred arising from the test, and the ratio of consolidation related to the improvement period. In accordance with the shape of core and that whether the core is attached to the filter(pocket or adhesion), the castle type of adhesion and the column type of pocket are more efficient than the others as a consequence of the test to find out the improvement effect depending on each drainage such as a castle type, coil type, harmonica type, column type of pocket and a castle of the adhesion. In case of the step suction pressure, the shorter the period of $-0.8\;kg/cm^2$ as a final step of the suction pressure is, the better the improvement is. In addition, the correlation between degree of consolidation per each suction pressure level and duration of application was drawn as a curve and the point of inflection on this curve was provided to determine the duration period to maximize the consolidation.
