  • Recently the deep and large excavations are performed near the existing buildings in urban areas for the practical use of underground space. The earth pressure due to the excavation are varied according to the conditions of ground, the depth of excavation, the construction methods, and the method of supporting the earth pressure etc.. In this study, not only the behavior of axial load and distribution of earth pressure on the flexible wall according to stage excavation depth but also magnitude and distribution of lateral deformation, and the equivalent earth pressure from strut axial loads were analyzed by the results measured from instruments such as, load cells, strain gauges, and in-situ inclinometer, on the field of subway construction. According to the results of this study in the case of stage excavation the earth pressure of soft clayey soil is compounded with Terzaghi-Peck and Tschebotarioff.

  • The strength and dimension of recent constructed subway box structures are increased considerably. These increases are resulting in much initial cracks by hydration heat and thermal stress. According to previous studies, decrease of cement amount by using superplasticizer and L/H value is the best way to eliminate hydration heat and stress. The analyses using finite element model were performed. By the result of analysis, the use of superplasticizer and the decrease of the change of longitudinal placing length are proved to be more effective for elimination thermal cracks. By ACI Code, for longitudinal placing length 25 m, the amount of wall temperature reinforcement is always lack despite of concrete mix proportion. With analytical result and the inducing crack joint, the in-site test were performed and the analytical results proved to be effective. However, the inducing crack joint is not effective if it is a small size.

  • To suggest the standard of railroad noise and its measures and grasp its status 15 open sites of the Jungang. Taeback and Youngdong line in which the background noise level is very low and the railroad is at grade and 7 urban sites of the Kyungboo and Honam line were selected and the sound level which 373 trains passing through the former and 271 trains passing through the latter emitted was investigated. The community response of railroad noise was surveyed for apartment near wayside. Noise reduction of wall for apartment at the wayside was investigated. The prediction of electric train subway noise is derived for the environment impact assessment.

  • This paper discusses contents of the existing design, the behaviours prediction on the strut and retaining wall around subsurfaces, and also evaluates the measured results in comparison with the management criterion during excavation period of ventilation shaft at Pusan-Subway 220. Field measurements showed that maximum displacement 23.74 mm at boundary site of multistratification and the weathered rock to be formed at 0.2~0.6 H of total excavating depth(H), 68 ton of maximum axial force and 4.4X102 kg/cm2 of stress on strut. The measured axial force exceeds prediction levels by up to 50 percent at the weathered soil & rock, and the others come under the category of their levels. The great gap of both field measurements and prediction on behaviour makes a difference of the site situation at the design stage and the practical working. This measured value is greatly safety in comparison with that of the safety criterion, but axial force at 4~5 strut of ventilation shaft l is higher than the prediction.

  • Open-cut method has been widely used to construct underground structures, but it causes several problems such as traffic congestion and public resentment resulting from severe construction noise and ground settlement. In many cases, it is very difficult to build underground structures safely due to the unknown locations of buried facilities such as water pipes, drainage pipes, gas pipes and high-pressure cable conduits etc. Also in open-cut method, moving buried facilities causes additional cost and extension of construction period. Therefore, this paper is to present a case study in which Tubular Roof construction Method (T.R.c.M.), a newly developed construction method for underground structures using slab steel pipes and PC wall trench, is applied for the construction of a subway tunnel in Seoul. As a result, it is found that T.R.c.M. is a construction method by which tunnels can be constructed safely without any effect on the surrounding environment and traffic flow due to the minimized construction vibration and noise.

  • In this study, the vibration analysis of the underground box structures induced train movement is studied. In order to perform these analysis, dynamic data, which was measured when subway is in service, are gained by attaching accelerometers on the structure such as lower beam, lateral wall and upper slab. Also, accelerometers are attached on the lower beams and side walls of the gravel ballast and concrete ballast sections in order to compare vibration due to ballast materials. The vibration results of upper slabs and lower beams reveal that the vibration on the upper slabs is greater than the lower beams. Also, the results of the crack gauge on the upper slab show that crack width dose not change due to vibration, These means that the effect of the vibration on the structure is very limited. In order to evaluate the vibration of the structure, acceleration unit is converted to velocity unit comparing with the existing velocity data gained from the platforms.

  • Supporting system design and construction management for the soft and hard rock layers with fractured zones are very important theme for the safety of temporary retaining wall, surrounding ground and structures in the urban deep excavation for the construction of subway, railway, building etc. The prevailing design method of supporting system for the soft and hard rock layers in the deep excavation is mostly carrying out by simplification without proper consideration for the characteristic of rock discontinuities. Therefore the behaviors of rock discontinuities and fractured zones dominate the whole safety of excavation work in the real construction stage, serious disaster due to the failure of temporary retaining wall can be induced in the case of developing large deformations in the ground and large axial forces in the supporting system. This paper introduces examples of deep excavation where the soft and hard rock layers with fractured zones were designed to be supported by shotcrete and rock bolt, deformations of corresponding ground and supporting systems in the construction period and increments of axial force in the upper earth anchors and strut due to the these deformations were investigated through detailed analysis of measurement data, the results were so used for the management of consecutive construction that led to the safe and economical completion of excavation work. The effort of this article aims to improve and develop the technique of design and construction in the coming projects having similar ground condition and supporting method.

  • The maintenance for the stability of tunnel, especially on downtown area, careful check must be considered during construction stage and after. Moreover we have to achieve the stability of tunnel by ground improvement and reinforcement when ground condition is bad or tunnel failures under the various ground conditions. In this paper, it is presented the case of tunnel failure and the state of restoration by ground reinforcements at seoul subway $\bigcirc$-$\bigcirc$ construction site. For the purpose of ground reinforcement, first, curtain wall was established by chemical grouting. Secondly, cement milk grouting was carried by upper part of tunnel crown. Also Boreholes loading test and tunnel monitoring were carried by in failure site for the long term stability of tunnel.

  • Massive underground excavation can be carried out recently due to the technical development of the excavation for retaining wall. Feed-back analysis using field measurement results is recommended to secure the stability of the construction because calculated values at stages of the design and the construction are uncertain. Reinforcement plan should be established based on the result of it. This study deals with the underground excavation site, which is under construction and is close to structure(subway) at downtown area. The result of feed-back analysis on the measurement data of displacement at multi-soil layers was reflected to make a plan for safe construction. This case study can be useful information for contingency plan on abnormal displacement which can be occurred at similar underground excavation.

  • Displacement control of earth retaining wall is recognized as the most important item for insuring the stability of ground in urban deep excavation site near by major structure such as subway etc. The field monitoring system is classified by two types as manual system and automatic system. The application case of latter type of field monitoring is increased because real time measurement is possible in automatic system and that is correspondent with the recent constructional trend. Though the automatic monitoring system is more useful and advanced than manual monitoring system, accuracy of the system is not verified sufficiently. It was examined that the reliance of automatic monitoring system in this paper through the comparison of monitoring result obtained three urban excavation site in which the each type of monitoring system was executed concurrently. Result of the examination is that the two types of monitoring system is generally alike in view of monitoring result, so the engineering reliance of automatic system was confirmed in case site. This task was researched in restricted case site, it is expected more precise analysis from security of more data monitored and progressive study.
