  • Substructuring-based hierarchical approach for design analysis and optimization of structural frames is presented in this study. The conceptual framework of this method is in the hierarchical modeling for design processes as well as structural systems and the methodology combining substructuring analysis and multilevel optimization. Mathematical models for analysis and synthesis are established on the common basis of substructuring systems. Modularized behavioral analysis, design sensitivity analysis and optimization are linked and integrated on the mathematical and structural basis of substructuring. Substructures are coordinated with the active constraints for system level and the weight ratio criteria. Numerical examples for test frames show the validity and effectiveness of the present approach.

  • In order to acquire high-speed and high-precision performances in servomechanisms, an integrated design method have been proposed. Based on strict mathematical modeling and analysis of system performance according to design and operating parameters, a nonlinear constrained optimization problem including the relevant subsystem parameters of the servomechanism is formulated. Optimum design results of mechanical and electrical parameters are obtained according to the design parameters specified by designers through the integrated design processes. Motors are optimally selected from the servo motor database. Both the geometric errors referring to Abbe offset and the contour errors are minimized while required constraints such as stability conditions and saturated conditions are satisfied. This design methodology both offers the improved possibility to evaluate and optimize the dynamic motion performance of the servomechanism and improves the quality of the design process to achieve the required performance for high-speed/precision servomechanisms.

  • In many engineering problems, the dynamic substructuring can be useful to analyze complex structures which made with many substructures, such as aircrafts and automotive vehicles. It was originally intended as a method to simplify the engineering problem. The powerful advantage to this is that computational efficiency dramatically increases with eliminating unnecessary degrees-of-freedom of the system and the system targets are concurrently satisfied. Craig-Bampton method has been widely used for the linear system reduction. Recently, multi-level optimization (such as target cascading), which propagates the system-level targets to the subsystem-level targets, has been widely utilized. To this concept, the genetic algorithm which one of the global optimization technique has been utilized to the substructure optimization. The number of internal modes for each substructure can be obtained by the genetic algorithm. Simultaneously, the reduced system meets the top-level targets. In this paper, various numerical examples are tested to verify this concept.
