A small-loop electromagnetic (EM) system using multiple frequencies has advantages in survey speed and cost despite of limitation on its depth of investigation. Therefore, small-loop EM surveys have been frequently used on various site investigations involving engineering and environmental problems. We have developed a subsurface imaging technique using small loop EM data. We used a one-dimensional (ID) inversion method to reconstruct a subsurface image from frequency EM sounding data. Tests using simulated data show that the method can reasonably recover the subsurface resistivity structure. Also, the method was tested on field data obtained with multiple frequency small loop EM system at a farm in Chunchon, Korea. The resistivity image obtained form field data compares favorably with the image from the dipole-dipole resistivity survey.
The back projection histogram method has been proposed as the method to construct an image from waves reflected from a buried object for subsurface radar. This method is compose of two phases, i.e., a back projection image construction process and a back projection image superposition process. A simulation analysis of this method has been studied. In this paper, an experimental study is demonstrated in air as the homogeneous Held using three cylinders as buried objects.
Recently, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys have been actively carried out for precise subsurface void investigation because of the rapid increase of subsidence in urban areas. However, since the interpretation of GPR data was conducted based on the interpreter's subjective decision after applying only the basic data processing, it can result in reliability problems. In this research, to solve these problems, we analyzed the difference between the events generated from subsurface voids and those of strong diffraction sources such as the buried pipeline by applying the edge detection technique, which is one of image processing technologies. For the analysis, we applied the image processing technology to the GRP field data containing events generated from the cavity or buried pipeline. As a result, the main events by the subsurface void or diffraction source were effectively separated using the edge detection technique. In addition, since subsurface voids associated with the subsidence has a relatively wide scale, it is recorded as a gentle slope event unlike the event caused by the strong diffraction source recorded with a sharp slope. Therefore, the directional analysis of amplitude variation in the image enabled us to effectively separate the events by the subsurface void from those by the diffraction source. Interpretation based on these kinds of objective analysis can improve the reliability. Moreover, if suggested techniques are verified to various GPR field data sets, these approaches can contribute to semiautomatic interpretation of large amount of GPR data.
Borehole image analysis has been carried out to obtain the detailed geological data by approach of direct observation. Direct application of borehole image analysis inevitably gives rise to a few of restriction of data acquisition due to the limited information within narrow borehole space. Considering the apparent dip of discontinuity surface depending upon the direction, the visualized program of two-dimensional subsurface discontinuities is coded. Borehole image analysis can compensate the distribution of subsurface discontinuity extending into the expected area of investigation. In order to draw subsurface profile in the proposed area of subsurface construction, visualized program is coded as a window GUI (Graphic User Interface) using Fortran and Visual Basic Programming languages. It is to open publicly for the usage of whoever is in want. Discontinuity distribution map is visualized along the Proposed line of tunnel in the Janggye-ri area, Jangsu-gun. Using the visualized program, the limited information from borehole spatially applies into analysis of overall subsurface structures, and the distributional characteristics of discontinuity anticipate at the proposed area. In addition, spacing and extension of joint and depth of discontinuity effecting tunnel safety can be visualized along the direction of the proposed tunnel. These lines of visualization apply design and construction of fundanmental structures.

This paper presents an automated subsurface micro void detection technique based on pulsed infrared thermography for inspecting epoxy molding compounds (EMC) used in electronic device packaging. Subsurface micro voids are first detected and visualized by extracting a lock-in amplitude image from raw thermal images. Binary imaging follows to achieve better visualization of subsurface micro voids. A median filter is then applied for removing sparse noise components. The performance of the proposed technique is tested using 36 EMC samples, which have subsurface (below $150{\mu}m{\sim}300{\mu}m$ from the inspection surface) micro voids ($150{\mu}m{\sim}300{\mu}m$ in diameter). The experimental results show that the subsurface micro voids can be successfully detected without causing any damage to the EMC samples, making it suitable for automated online inspection.
In computer graphics, realistic skin rendering has been regarded as difficult tasks and remains as an important research subject. Translucent materials like skin have some complicated optical properties including subsurface scattering. In this paper, we proposes a skin shader based on subsurface scattering to render realistic skin and it has been implemented as a plug-in for Maya, 3D Package. The rendered image using this proposed skin shader appears more realistic than the rendered image using classical shading techniques. Furthermore, we could model sebum, epidermis, dermis using specular reflection, multiple scattering, single scattering respectively.

Every object emits some energy from its surface. The emission energy forms surface heat distribution which we can capture by using an infrared thermal imager. The infrared thermal image may include valuable information regarding to the subsurface anomaly of the object. Since a thermal image reflects surface clutter and subsurface anomaly, we have difficulty in extracting the information on the subsurface anomaly only with thermal images taken under a wavelength. Thus, we use visible wavelength images of the object surface to remove exterior clutter. We, therefore in this paper, visualize the infrared image for overlaying it with a visible wavelength image. First, we make an interpolated image from two ordinary images taken from both sides of an infrared sensor. Next, we overlay the intermediate image with an infrared image taken from the infrared camera. The technique suggested in this paper can be utilized for analyzing the infrared images on non-destructive inspection against disaster and for safety.

This study investigates acoustic emission (AE) and micro-deformation characteristics of circular openings through biaxial compression experiments. The experimental results showed a significant increase in the frequency, count, energy, and amplitude of AE signals immediately before damage occurred in the circular opening. The differences in frequency and count between before and after damage initiation were significantly pronounced, indicating suitable factors for identifying damage occurrence in circular openings. The results for digital image correlation (DIC) technique revealed that micro-deformation was concentrated around the openings, as evidenced by the spatial distribution of strain. In addition, spalling was observed at the end of the experiments. The AE and micro-deformation characteristics presented in this study are expected to serve as fundamental data for evaluating the stability of underground openings and boreholes for deep subsurface projects.

Recently, the pollution of soil and groundwater becomes a serious social problem, and geophysical exploration methods have been introduced as a remedial investigation method of subsurface. Digital technologies such as personal computer have revolutionized our ability to acquire large volumes of data in a short term, and to produce more reliable results for subsurface image. Also, color graphics easily visualizes the survey results in a more understandable manner, and it is widely used for not only characterizing the contaminated subsurface but also monitoring contaminant and remedial process. In this paper, electrical resistivity survey were carried out In order to understand characteristics of waste landfills, and the applicability of geophysical prospecting to site assessment of waste landfill was also tested. According to the result, electrical resistivity survey were effective in estimating distribution of the leachate plume.

A form of measured temperature distribution to estimate condition of a electrical apparatus is a absolute reference for condition of the apparatus, time rate of transition, and difference between reference and currently temperature. Because passive thermography which has not injection of external thermal stimulation shows difference of temperature being on surface of a structure and temperature difference between the structure and back ground, the result could apply only to estimation or monitor for condition of terminal relaxation and overload related with temperature rising. However, a thermal flow in active thermography is differently generated by structure and condition of surface and subsurface. This paper presents the nondestructive testing using the properties and includes the results by heat injection and cooling to the apparatus. The buried discontinuity of subsurface could be detected by these techniques.
