  • The characteristics of cometabolic removal of xylenes by Alcaligenes xylosoxidans Y234 were investigated. m-Xylene was found to be degraded while ο- and p-xylene were biotransformed into cresols in the presence of benzene or toluene. A lower level of benzene was required than that of toluene to remove the same amount of xylenes, which suggested benzene was a more effective primary substrate than toluene. ο-Xylene was found to be the most toxic to Alcaligenes xylosoxidans Y234 followed by p-xylene and m-xylene. Rates of cell decay during cometabolic removal of ο-, m-, or p-xylene were decreased by up to $76\%$ when benzene-adapted cells were inoculated. Xylenes were removed efficiently using benzene-adapted cells.

  • In these days, constructed wetlands are applied in Korea for various purposes ; post-treatment of effluent in wastewater treatment, management of stormwater and restoration of aquatic ecosystems. However, the removal mechanisms for water pollutant in constructed wetlands are not clearly understood because they are affected by climate, influent characteristics and local constraints. Therefore, this paper is focused on the process that the pollutant, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, of the wetland is removed by. In this study, the main nitrogen removal is performed by nitrification/denitrification mechanism in the rhizosphere of constructed wetlands. And the majority of the phosphorus is removed by adsorption on the substrate of wetland. However the fate of phosphorus in wetlands can be diverse depending on the Oxidation Reduction Potential(ORP), adsorption/desorption, precipitation/dissolution, microbial effect, etc.

  • Recovery of valuable metals in the industrial wastewater and sludge has attracted an attention owing to limited metallic resources in the earth. In this study, we firstly fabricated Ti/Ir-Ru electrodes by spin coating technique for effective recovery of Cu in electrowinning process. Two different Ti/Ir-Ru electrodes were fabricated using 100 and 500 mM of precursors (i.e., Ir-Ru). SEM-EDX and AFM revealed that Ir and Ru were homogenously distributed on the surface of Ti plate by the spin coating, in particular the electrode prepared by 500 mM showed distinct boundary line between Ir-Ru layer and Ti substrate. XRD, XPS, and cyclic voltammetry also revealed that characteristics of IrO2, RuO2, and TiO2 and its electrocatalytic property increased as the concentration of coating precursor increased. Finally, we carried out Cu recovery experiments using two Ti/Ir-Ru as anodes in electrowinning process, showing that both anodes showed a complete removal of Cu (1 and 10 g/L) within 6 h reaction, but much higher kinetic rate constant was obtained by the anode prepared by 500 mM. The findings in this study can provide a fundamental knowledge for surface characteristics of Ti/Ir-Ru electrode prepared by spin coating method and its potential feasibility for effective electrowinning process.

  • Characteristics of a downflow anaerobic packed bed reactor with raschig ring ceramics as a packing were measured and discussed for the basic evaluation of the process. A synthesized glucose substrate wastewater were used as a feed and process characteristics such as pH, biogas production, composition of produced gas, COD removal and VSS were measured with the hydraulic retention time (HRT) changing from 0.25 to 2 days. As a result, this type of reactor was applicable in continuous operation within the given HRT range and the transient period approaching the steady state was about 20 days. The content of methane in produced gas increase with HRT was always high above 50% enough to use as energy source. The COD removal efficiency increased gradually as HRT increased. The axial profile of VSS concentration in the reactor usually showed the maximum at the lower region and the minimum at the middle. The VSS concentration at the upper region and the exit appeared similarly. However, at 0.25 day of HRT, the VSS concentration of effluent became higher than that of the upper region. Therefore the optimum HRT of this reactor occurred about 0.5 day, at which the production of methane began to be just stabilized and loss of VSS and COD removal were resonable.

  • Both strains of KD-1212 and DAH-1056 were isolated and identified from animal manure-contaminated soil by screening bacterial strains for the removal of sulfur compound-malodor with such substrate as sodium thiosulfate or free sulfur. Then the characteristics on the incubation of these microbes were observed under various incubating-condition such as pH, temperature, aerobic or anaerobic, substrate(sulfur compound) concentration, nitrogen and carbon source and rotating speed for mixing, and the optimum incubating condition was established. The optimum pHs of KD-1212 and DAH-1056 were 7.0 and 4.0, respectively, and their optimum temperatures were in the range of $30{\sim}35^{\circ}C$. Another autotrophic strain, ED-1138, was isolated from contaminated soil. The strain DAH-1056 excelled a strain Thiobacillus sp. IW in eliminating hydrogen sulfide during the process of malodor-biofiltration with a fixed strain. The characteristics on the incubation of strain KD-1212 were observed under various substrate-concentrations, nitrogen and carbon sources. KD-1212 favored glucose and maltose, and yeast extract as carbon sources and nitrogen source, respectively. The optimum concentrations of substrate and nitrogen source were 25 mM of sodium thiosulfate and 0.5% yeast extract, respectively for the growth of strain KD-1212.

  • The characteristics of septic tank sludges were investigated and the kinetic coefficients in the aerobic biodegradation were evaluated from bach treatability tests. Using an unbiased statistical method, the estimated values, k (substrate removal rate coefficient) =0. 0175hr-1 at 17\ulcornerC, K. (Michaelis Menten constant) = 248mg/ e, a (cell yield coefficient)=0.625, and Kd (cell decay coefficient:' =0. 00192hr-1 were obtained based on biodegradable COD(mg/ \ulcorner) and volatile suspended solids(mg/\ulcorner). The relationship between COD and BOD, COD (mg/\ulcorner) =2. 1 BOD(mg/\ulcorner) +250, also was established for the septic tank sludges. Dilution was inevitable for the grit removal because of the high viscosity of the sludges. An aerobic activated sludge process rather than anaerobic processes was recommended for the removal of soluble organics after the removal of grit and suspended solids. A multi-stage activated sludge process was adapted for this highly concentrated and not easily-degradable waste. It was estimated that a four-stage activated sludge process would require 40 hours retention time compared to 92 hours for a single-stage process, 52 hours for a double-stage process, and 46 hours for a three stage process in order to achieve an effluent quality of 84mg/ e COD( 40mg/ e BOD) with about 4, OOOmg/ \ulcorner MLSS from an influent quality of I, 500mg/ t COD(714mg/.e BOD), while multi-stages beyond four stage would not save the required retention time significantly.

  • Fine dust in air pollutants is recognized as one of the most serious social environmental problems. Most of the NOx is generated in a combustion process such as that of a coal-fired power plant, and therefore efficient elimination of the NOx from the coal-fired power plants is needed. This study investigates the removal efficiency of using $TiO_2$, a photocatalyst, to remove NOx by Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). To evaluate the NOx removal efficiency, $TiO_2$ catalyst and phosphate binder were mixed on the surface of the $Al_2O_3$ substrate with the exothermic agent, and the substrate was heat-treated. The NOx removal efficiency of the catalysts was evaluated according to the temperature, and XRD, SEM, TG-DTA and BET analyzes were performed to investigate the physicochemical properties of the catalysts. NOx removal efficiency was 58.7%~65.9% at 20min, 63.7~66.0% at 30min with temperature change according to time($250^{\circ}C{\sim}500^{\circ}C$). The $TiO_2$ used in the SCR for NOx removal is judged to have the most efficient removal efficiency at $300^{\circ}C$.

  • An experimental research was conducted in order to study the combined treatment o of municipal landfill leachate and municipal sewage. The landfill leachate was that of Nanjido landfill site, and the municipal sewage was that of Chungnang municipal sewage treatment plant in Seoul. Several sets of bench~scale sequencing batch reactor(SBR) were used as e experimental apparatus. Specially investigated items in this experiment were the removal efficiency of substrate and the influence of treatment time. The experiment lasted for about 2 years. The result are as follows ; 1. The characteristics of leachate were pH 7.5~8.2, BOD 80~336mg/L, COD 908~1,460mg/L, NH3-N 1,409~2,330mg/L, T~P 2.7~7.lmg/L, Cl~3,540~4,085mg/L, a and heavy metals are a very small amount. And the characteristics of sewage were pH 6.9~7.3, BOD 78.4~129.3mg/L, COD 121.2~305.0mg/L, T~N 14.9~36.4mg/L, T-P 2.3~8.9mg/L. 2. The treatability of leachate alone was not treat well. So for the good treatment of leachate, it was necessary to deal with the pretreatment before bi이ogical treatment and a combined treatment of municipal sewage. 3. The various contents of the leachate were 5%, 10%, 30%, and 50%, and the removal efficiency of COD was 86.0%, 82.8%, 60.6%, and 31.7%. The maximum content of the leachate which could be sucessfully treated by SBR in the combined treatment was 10% of that of sewage. And the removal efficiency of COD increased n notably, as its treatment time increased. 4. The various contents of the electrolytic treated leachate were 5%, 10%, 30%, and 50%, and the removal efficiency of COD was 89.9%, 86.1%, 79.2%, and 69.8%. The maximum content of the leachate which could be sucessfully treated by SBR in the combined treatment was 30 % of that of sewage. And the removal efficiency of C COD increased notably, as its treatment time increased.

  • This study was performed to investigate the removal characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the gasphase biofilters, and to propose a stoichiometric analysis approach to characterize biological reaction through carbon mass balance. The VOCs studied were toluene, styrene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) as a single substrate for each biofilter. The critical loading rate was determined to be $46.9\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$, $25.8\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$, $96.3\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$, and $66.5\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$ for toluene, styrene, MEK, and MIBK, respectively. The obtained results indicated that the critical loading rate was well correlated the octanol-water partition coefficient. In the analysis of carbon mass balance, carbon recovery to $CO_2$ became relatively lower as substrate loadings increased, but higher for carbon recovery to biomass. Stoichiometric analysis revealed that biomass yield increased as substrate loadings increased, and its coefficient (g biomass/g substrate) varied from 0.31 to 0.57 for toluene, 0.29 to 0.57 for styrene, 0.08 to 0.56 for MEK, and 0.14 to 0.53 for MIBK.

  • Effects of sulfate on the anaerobic substrate utilization were evaluated using UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) reactor. Effect of sulfate on the organic removal rate was dependent on the relative amount of microorganisms in the reactor, the operational condition, and the characteristics of sludge. When the sulfate shock was applied to 0.0 - 3.0g SO$_{4}$$^{2-}$/d, more than 95% of COD removal efficiency was achieved. Therefore, if F/M ratio was kept to low sufficiently with recirculation, it is shown that operation of the reactor was not affected significantly, though sulfate shock load was doubled compared to the normal operation. Provided that it is shocked by high strength of sulfate or temporary shock load is applied frequently the efficiency of reactor may be disadvantageous as well as the wash-out of sludge will be increased by decreasing the size to the accumulated frequency of granular sludge and the size with maximum frequency.
