  • A nonlinear finite element modeling approach is developed to assess the behavior of a dowel bar embedded on a single concrete block substrate, subjected to monotonic loading. In this approach, a discrete representation of the steel reinforcing bar is considered, using beam finite elements with nonlinear material behavior. The bar is connected to the concrete embedment through nonlinear Winkler spring elements. This modeling approach can only be used if a new constitutive model is developed for the spring elements, to simulate the deformability and strength of the concrete substrate. To define this constitutive model, an extensive literature review was conducted, as well as 3 experimental tests, in order to select the experimental data which can be used in the calibration of the model. Based on this data, an empirical model was established to predict the global dowel response, for a wide range of bar diameters and concrete strengths. This empirical model provided the information needed for calibration of the nonlinear Winkler spring model, valid for dowel displacements up to 4 mm. This new constitutive model is composed by 5 stages, in order to reproduce the concrete substrate response.

  • This study deals with the effect on adhesive strength properties of waterproofing and reinforcing layer and mortar or concrete substrate applicated by epoxy resin anticorrosive and bonding materials. Properties of adhesive strength change condition of concrete substrate, temperature, moisture, curing and cleaning and so on. The purpose of this study is that it makes the estimation value of bond strength of concrete wall and epoxy resin layer when coated epoxy resin as anticorrosive materials for durability performance estimation depend on concrete watertightness, and when penetrated epoxy resin for the reinforcement of concrete used the carbon fiber sheet.

  • This paper deals with the properties of water permeability and porosity of cement mortar substrate coated with siliceous slurry coating under the exposure environment. Conditions of exposure enviornment are four kinds of in constant temperature water and humidity box, in indoor and outdoor exposure. Coated mortar substrate was expected continually increase in water and humidity condition, but was not in dry condition. Watertightness effect of siliceous coating was better in the condition of humidity then the dry condition, and the pore volume was decreased in that condition.

  • The cement concrete pavements are designed twenty years of performance life in Korea. At the present time, some expressways have been elapsed seventy percent of performance life which are detecting local failures. The most repair methods using to repair failures are partial depth repair and full section repair. These methods are most important bonding strength between rapid curing materials and substrate concrete pavements. This study was performed to evaluate bonding strength of the composites section made of rapid curing material and substrate concrete pavements. The pull-out tester was used to test bonding strength for the composites section made of each materials. In the results of the test, the bonding strength values of the epoxy mortar and acrylic mortar are higher than those of the other materials. The performance life of repaired section is affected by various factor. The bonding strength of bonded composites section may be affect the performance life, significantly.

  • Strengthening concrete structures using FRP composites is a commonly considered technology in many practical situations. The success of the strengthening intervention largely depends on adequate bond between FRP sheets and the concrete substrate. In recent years, techniques to anchor FRP sheets in applications where sheets must develop strength in a short length have been proposed. One of these techniques includes use of FRP anchors embedded into the concrete substrate and forming part of the composite strengthening system. This paper presents the results of studies conducted recently at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to advance the understanding on the behavior of FRP anchored systems.

  • In this study, we investigated the tensile bond characteristics of underwater coating materials, in order to obtain useful information in support of repair work for marine and coastal concrete structures. Test variables included type of underwater coating, surface conditions of the concrete substrate, and environmental conditions. Pull-off tensile bond strength was measured at 24 h after applying underwater coatings to concrete substrates, in compliance with the procedures specified in ASTM C1583. Failure modes (coating, interface, and parent concrete) for each coating were identified through visual inspection, and comparisons were made based on measured bond strength. The tensile bond strength decreased underwater compared to that under dry conditions, while no significant effect of surface roughness on the measured bond strength was observed in underwater tests. Key aspects that need to be considered regarding selection and use of underwater coating materials for marine and coastal concrete structures were discussed.
