Catalytic Activity Change of Perovskite Catalysts with A-Site Substitution (페로브스카이트 촉매에서 A-Site 치환에 따른 촉매활성 변화)

  • Catalytic activity changes of perovskite catalysts were examined with their A-site substitution. For the preparation of catalysts, Mn was used for B-site component and La, Ce, Sr, Ba, Ca, Ag were used for A-site component of the perovskite $catalysts(ABO_3)$ The effect of calcination temperature on methane combustion and perovskite structure was also investigated. The surface area and adsorbed oxygen species were tested with BET apparatus and $O_2-TPD$, respectively. Perovskite catalysts whose A-site was partially substituted needed higher calcination temperature than un-substituted one to form the perovskite structure. From $O_2-TPD$ experiment, it was found that methane combustion activity was directly related to the oxygen desorbing ability of the catalysts. The prepared catalyst(LM-7) was stable at $600^{\circ}C$ for 72 hours of reaction.

Site-directed Mutagenesis of Arginine 13 Residue in Human Glutathione S-Transferase P1-1

  • In order to study the role of residue in the active site of glutathione S-transferase (GST), Arg13 residue in human GST P1-1 was replaced with alanine, lysine and leucine by site-directed mutagenesis to obtain mutants R13A, R13K and R13L. These three mutant enzymes were expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to electrophoretic homogeneity by affinity chromatography on immobilized GSH. Mutation of Arg13 into Ala caused a substantial reduction of the specific activity by 10-fold. Km GSH, Km DCNB and Km EPNP values of R13A were approximately 2-3 fold larger than those of the wild type. Mutation of Arg13 into Ala also significantly affected I50 values of S-methyl-GSH that compete with GSH and ethacrynic acid, an electrophilic substrate-like compound. These results appeared that the substitution of Arg13 with Ala resulted in significant structural change of the active site. Mutation of Arg13 into Leu reduced the catalytic activity by approximately 2-fold, whereas substitution by Lys scarcely affected the activity, indicating the significance of a positively charged residue at position 13. Therefore, arginine 13 participates in catalytic activity as mainly involved in the construction of the proper electrostatic field and conformation of the active site in human GST P1-1.

Effects of Sr Substitution on the PSN-PMN-PZT Ceramics for High Frequency (고주파 필터용 PSN-PMN-PZT 세라믹스의 Sr 치환효과)

  • In this study, the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency($TCF_r$), dielectric and piezoelectric properties of $Pb_{1-x}Sr_x[(Sb_{1/2}Nb_{1/2})_{0.035}(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{0.065}(Zr_{0.49},Ti_{0.51})_{0.90}]O_3$ ceramics were investigated with the Sr substitution to Pb site. The dielectric constant was increased according to the increase of Sr substitution and electromechanical coupling factor($k_t$) also showed the highest values of 0.485 when the Sr substitution was 5 mol%. Moreover, the mechanical quality factor($Q_{mt}$) showed the highest value of 233 when the Sr substitution was 2 mol%.

Dielectric Properties of (Ba0.7Sr0.3-3x/2Lax)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 Ceramics with La3+ Substitution for Sr2+-Site ((Ba0.7Sr0.3-3x/2Lax)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 세라믹의 Sr2+-자리에 대한 La3+ 치환에 따른 유전 특성)

  • The effects of La3+ substitution for Sr2+-site on the crystal structure and the dielectric properties of (Ba0.7Sr0.3-3x/2Lax) (Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 (BSLTZ) (0.005 ≤ x ≤ 0.02) ceramics were investigated. The structural characteristics of the BSLTZ ceramics were quantitatively evaluated using the Rietveld refinement method from X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. For the specimens sintered at 1,550 ℃ for 6 h, a single phase with a perovskite structure and homogeneous microstructure were observed for the entire range of compositions. With increasing La3+ substitution (x), the unit cell volume decreased because the ionic size of La3+ (1.36 Å) ions is smaller than that of Sr2+ (1.44 Å) ions. With increasing La3+ substitution (x), the tetragonal phase fraction increased due to the A-site cation size mismatch effect. Dielectric constant (εr) increased with the La3+ substitution (x) due to the increase in tetragonality (c/a) and the average B-site bond valence of the ABO3 perovskite. The BSLTZ ceramics showed a higher dielectric loss due to the smaller grain size than that of (Ba0.7Sr0.3)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 ceramics. BSLTZ (x = 0.02) ceramics met the X7R specification proposed by the Electronic Industries Association (EIA).

B-site Substitution Effects on the Piezoelectric Properties of Bi-based Lead-free Ceramics

  • B-site substitution with isovalent and donor impurities was compared in terms of the piezoelectric properties of Bi-based ABO3 perovskite ceramics. X-ray diffraction study revealed that both impurities bring about degradation in their ferroelectric properties as well as piezoelectric characteristics. However, there existed a difference between the isovalent and heterovalent impurities that influence a phase transformation of ferroelectric anisotropic-to-electrostrictive pseudocubic symmetry. Based upon analyses including the crystal, microstructure, dielectric, ferroelectric properties, we believed that A-site vacancies in the ABO3 ceramic significantly contribute to a ferroelectric-nonpolar phase transition, which give rise to lead to a giant strains. The present paper will discuss the origin of giant strains in Bi-based perovskite ceramics.

Prediction of Hydroxyl Substitution Site(s) of Phenol, Monochlorophenols and 4-Chloronitrobenzene by Atomic Charge Distribution Calculations

  • The predictions of the radical reaction sites for phenol, 2-, 3- and 4-chlorophenols (CPs) and 4-chloronitrobenzene (CNB) were studied by atomic charge distribution calculations. The atomic charge distributions on each atom of these molecules were obtained using the CHelpG and MK (Merz-Kollman/Singh) methods with the optimized structural parameters determined by DFT calculation at the level of BLYP/6-311++G(d,p). By comparing the experimentally obtained hydroxyl addition site(s) and the calculated atomic charges on carbon atoms of phenol and CPs, we found that hydroxyl substitution by oxidation reaction mainly occurred to the carbon(s) with high atomic charges. With these results, we were easily able to predict the position(s) of the ·OH reaction site(s) of phenol, CPs and CNB through atomic charge distribution calculations.

Catalytic Combustion of Benzene over Perovskite-type Oxides Prepared Using Malic Acid Method (능금산법으로 제조된 페롭스카이트형 산화물에서 벤젠의 촉매연소반응)

  • Perovskite-type oxides were successfully prepared using malic acid method, characterized by TG/DTA, XRD, XPS, TEM and $H_2$-TPR and their catalytic activities for the combustion of benzene were determined. Almost of catalyst showed perovskite crystalline phase and 15-70 nm particle size. The $LaMnO_3$ catalysts showed the highest activity and the conversion reaches almost 100% at $350^{\circ}C$. The catalysts were modified to enhance the activity through substitution of metal into the A or B site of the perovskite oxides. In the $LaMnO_3$-type catalyst, the partial substitution of Sr into site the A-site enhanced the catalytic activity in the benzene combustion. In addition, the partial substitution of Co or Cu into site the B-site also enhanced the catalytic activity and the catalytic activity was in the order of Co > Cu > Fe in the $LaMn_{1-x}B_xO_3$ (B = Co, Fe, Cu) type catalyst.

Superconducting Properties of Ge Substitution for the Bi Site in the 2212 Phase of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O Superconductors (Bi계 산화물 초전도체 2212상에 있어서 Bi 자리에 Ge 치환에 따른 초전도 특성)

  • Samples with the nominal composition, Bi2-xGexSr2CaCu2O8+$\delta$ (x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) were prepared by the solid-state reaction method. We have studied the effect of substitution Ge for Bi and investigated the superconducting properties by changing oxygen content with Ge substitution. It was found that temperature difference, ΔK, between TCon and TCzero was considerably smaller in the samples prepared by the intermediate pressing method than that in the samples by the solid-state reaction method. We found the solubility limit of Ge to the 80 K single phase was around x=0.3. Within the solubility limit, lattice constant c decreased with the increase of x. In the region of the 80K single phase, the onset critical temperature TCon increased and excess oxygen content decreased with increase of x.

  • We have studied the catalytic combustion of soot particulates over perovskite-type oxides prepared by malic acid method, The catalysts were modified to enhance the activity by substitution of metal into A or B site of perovskite oxide. In addition, the reaction conditions such as temperature and $O_2$ concentration were investigated. The partial substitution of alkali metals into A site in the $LaMnO_3$ catalyst, enhanced the catalytic activity in the combustion of carbon particulate and the activity was shown in the order: Cs > K > Na. For the $La_{1-x}Cs_{x}MnO_{3}$ catalysts, the catalytic activity showed the maximum value with x=0.3 but no more increase on the catalytic activity was shown with x > 0.3. For the $La_{0.8}Cs_{0.2}MnO_{3}$ catalyst, the substitution of Fe or Ni increased the ignition temperature. The ignition temperature decreased with an increase of $O_2$ concentration, however, no more increase in the catalytic activity was shown with $O_2$ concentration > 0.2. The introduction of NO into reactants showed no effect on the catalytic activity.

Altered sugar donor specificity and catalytic activity of pteridine glycosyltransferases by domain swapping or site-directed mutagenesis

  • CY-007 and CY-049 pteridine glycosyltransferases (PGTs) that differ in sugar donor specificity to catalyze either glucose or xylose transfer to tetrahydrobiopterin were studied here to uncover the structural determinants necessary for the specificity. The importance of the C-terminal domain and its residues 218 and 258 that are different between the two PGTs was assessed via structure-guided domain swapping or single and dual amino acid substitutions. Catalytic activity and selectivity were altered in all the mutants (2 chimeric and 6 substitution) to accept both UDP-glucose and UDP-xylose. In addition, the wild type activities were improved 1.6-4.2 fold in 4 substitution mutants and activity was observed towards another substrate UDP-N-acetylglucosamine in all the substitution mutants from CY-007 PGT. The results strongly support essential role of the C-terminal domain and the two residues for catalysis as well as sugar donor specificity, bringing insight into the structural features of the PGTs.
