  • In this paper, the performance evaluation of the JADE-MUSIC estimation based on the indoor channel is presented. By means of the JADE-MUSIC algorithm, DOA and time delay can be obtained simultaneously. In the JADE-MUSIC method, the channel impulse response is first estimated from the received samples and then this impulse response is employed to estimate DOAs and time delays of multipath waves. Moreover, according to the JADE-MUSIC characteristics, it can work in cases when the number of impinging waves is more than the number of antenna elements, unlike the traditional parametric subspace-based method, such a case is not true. Therefore, we employ the JADE-MUSIC algorithm applying for the real indoor environment where is rich of the multipath propagation waves and can imply that the number of waves is very possibly higher than that of the array element. The experiment is carried out in our laboratory considered to be the real indoor environment. The performance of the JADE-MUSIC algorithm is evaluated in terms of the comparison between the simulation and experiment results by using the simulated channel model and the real indoor channel model, respectively. It is clear that the joint angle and delay estimation using the simulated channel model are in good agreement with the estimation using the real indoor channel model. Therefore, we can say that the JADE-MUSIC algorithm accomplishes the high performance to jointly estimate the angle and delay of the arriving signal for the indoor environment.

  • An integrated approach for prostate cancer detection using proteomic data is presented. Due to the high-dimensional feature of proteomic data, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is used in the first-stage for data reduction as well as noise removal. After the process of DWT, the dimensionality is reduced from 43,556 to 1,599. Thus, each sample of proteomic data can be represented by 1599 wavelet coefficients. In the second stage, a voting method is used to select a common set of wavelet coefficients for all samples together. This produces a 987-dimension subspace of wavelet coefficients. In the third stage, the Autoassociator algorithm reduces the dimensionality from 987 to 400. Finally, the artificial neural network (ANN) is applied on the 400-dimension space for prostate cancer detection. The integrated approach is examined on 9 categories of 2-class experiments, and also 3- and 4-class experiments. All of the experiments were run 10 times of ten-fold cross-validation (i. e. 10 partitions with 100 runs). For 9 categories of 2-class experiments, the average testing accuracies are between 81% and 96%, and the average testing accuracies of 3- and 4-way classifications are 85% and 84%, respectively. The integrated approach achieves exciting results for the early detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer.

  • Damping ratio and frequency have influence on dynamic serviceability or instability such as vortex-induced vibration and displacement amplification due to earthquake and critical flutter velocity, and it is thus important to make determination of damping ratio and frequency accurate. As bridges are getting longer, small scale model test considering similitude law must be conducted to evaluate damping ratio and frequency. Analysis conditions modified by similitude law are applied to experimental test considering different scale ratios. Generally, Nyquist frequency condition based on natural frequency modified by similitude law has been used to determine sampling rate for different scale ratios, and total time length has been determined by users arbitrarily or by considering similitude law with respect to time for different scale ratios. However, Nyquist frequency condition is not suitable for multimode system with noisy signals. In addition, there is no specified criteria for determination of total time length. Those analysis conditions severely affect accuracy of damping ratio. The focus of this study is made on the determination of minimum analysis conditions for different scale ratios. Influence of signal to noise ratio is studied according to the level of noise level. Free initial value problem is proposed to resolve the condition that is difficult to know original initial value for free vibration. Ambient and free vibration tests were used to analyze the dynamic properties of a system using data collected from tests with a two degree-of-freedom section model and performed on full bridge 3D models of cable stayed bridges. The free decay is estimated with the stochastic subspace identification method that uses displacement data to measure damping ratios under noisy conditions, and the iterative least squares method that adopts low pass filtering and fourth order central differencing. Reasonable results were yielded in numerical and experimental tests.

  • This paper presents numerical modelling, modal testing, finite element model updating, linear and nonlinear earthquake behavior of a reinforced concrete building model. A 1/2 geometrically scale, two-storey, reinforced concrete frame model with raft base were constructed, tested and analyzed. Modal testing on the model using ambient vibrations is performed to illustrate the dynamic characteristics experimentally. Finite element model of the structure is developed by ANSYS software and dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios are calculated numerically. The enhanced frequency domain decomposition method and the stochastic subspace identification method are used for identifying dynamic characteristics experimentally and such values are used to update the finite element models. Different parameters of the model are calibrated using manual tuning process to minimize the differences between the numerically calculated and experimentally measured dynamic characteristics. The maximum difference between the measured and numerically calculated frequencies is reduced from 28.47% to 4.75% with the model updating. To determine the effects of the finite element model updating on the earthquake behavior, linear and nonlinear earthquake analyses are performed using 1992 Erzincan earthquake record, before and after model updating. After model updating, the maximum differences in the displacements and stresses were obtained as 29% and 25% for the linear earthquake analysis and 28% and 47% for the nonlinear earthquake analysis compared with that obtained from initial earthquake results before model updating. These differences state that finite element model updating provides a significant influence on linear and especially nonlinear earthquake behavior of buildings.

  • In this paper, we describe a method that can recognize gestures by obtaining motion features information with principal factor analysis from sequential gesture images. In the algorithm, firstly, a two dimensional silhouette region including human gesture is segmented and then geometric features are extracted from it. Here, global features information which is selected as some meaningful key feature effectively expressing gestures with principal factor analysis is used. Obtained motion history information representing time variation of gestures from extracted feature construct one gesture subspace. Finally, projected model feature value into the gesture space is transformed as specific state symbols by grouping algorithm to be use as input symbols of HMM and input gesture is recognized as one of the model gesture with high probability. Proposed method has achieved higher recognition rate than others using only shape information of human body as in an appearance-based method or extracting features intuitively from complicated gestures, because this algorithm constructs gesture models with feature factors that have high contribution rate using principal factor analysis.

  • With the proliferation of multimedia data, there is an increasing need to support the indexing and retrieval of high-dimensional image data. Although there have been many efforts, the performance of existing multidimensional indexing methods is not satisfactory in high dimensions. Thus the dimensionality reduction and the approximate solution methods were tried to deal with the so-called dimensionality curse. But these methods are inevitably accompanied by the loss of precision of query results. Therefore, recently, the vector approximation-based methods such as the VA- file and the LPC-file were developed to preserve the precision of query results. However, the performance of the vector approximation-based methods depend largely on the size of the approximation file and they lose the advantages of the multidimensional indexing methods that prune much search space. In this paper, we propose a new index structure called the GC-tree for efficient similarity search in image databases. The GC-tree is based on a special subspace partitioning strategy which is optimized for clustered high-dimensional images. It adaptively partitions the data space based on a density function and dynamically constructs an index structure. The resultant index structure adapts well to the strongly clustered distribution of high-dimensional images.

  • A differential codebook using M-ary phase shift keying (M-PSK) constellation as its codeword elements, is proposed for Long term evolution (LTE), LTE-Advanced (LTE-A), and/or WiMAX systems. Due to the temporal correlation of the adjacent channel, the consecutive precoding matrices are likely to be similar. This approach quantize only the differential information of the channel instead of the whole channel subspace, which virtually increase the codebook size to realize more accurate quantization of the channel. Especially, the proposed codebook has the same properties of LTE release-8 codebook that is, constant modulus, complexity reduction, and nested property. The mobile station can be designed by using a less expensive non-linear amplifier utilizing the constant modulus property. Computer simulations show that the capacity of the proposed codebook performs better than LTE release-8 codebook with the same amount of feedback information.

  • Adaptive arrays suffer from severe performance degradation when there are errors in the steering vector. The DCRCB (doubly constrained robust Capon beamformer) overcomes such a problem, introducing a spherical uncertainty set of the steering vector together with a norm constraint. However, in the standard DCRCB, it is a difficult task to determine the bound for the uncertainty, the radius of the spherical set, such that a near best solution is obtained. A novel beamforming method is presented which has no difficulty of the uncertainty bound setting, employing a recursive search for the steering vector. Though the basic idea of recursive search has been known, the conventional recursive method needs to set a parameter for the termination of the search. The proposed method terminates it by using distances to the signal subspace, without the need for parameter setting. Simulation demonstrates that the proposed method has better performance than the conventional recursive method and than the non-recursive standard DCRCB, even the one with the optimum uncertainty bound.

  • In this paper a commute time embedding is implemented by organizing patches according to the graph-based metric, and its properties are investigated via changing the number of nodes on the graph.. It is shown that manifold embedding methods generate the intrinsic geometric structures when waveforms such as speech or music instrumental sound signals are embedded on the low dimensional Euclidean space. Basically manifold embedding algorithms only project the training samples on the graph into an embedding subspace but can not generalize the learning results to test samples. They are very effective for data clustering but are not appropriate for classification or recognition. In this paper a commute time guided transform is adopted to enhance the generalization ability and its performance is analyzed by applying it to the classification of 6 kinds of music instrumental sounds.
