Numerical investigations on winglet effects on aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance of a civil aircraft wing

  • The paper discusses the effect of the winglets on the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance of Boeing 737-800 aircraft by numerical approach. For this purpose, computational fluid dynamics and fluent commercial software are used to solve the compressible flow governing equations. The RANS method and the K-ω SST turbulence model are selected to simulate the subsonic flow around the wing with acceptable accuracy and low computational cost. The main variables of steady flow around the simple and blended wing in constant atmospheric conditions are computed by numerical solution of governing equations. The solution of the acoustic field has also been accomplished by the broad-band acoustic source model. The results reveal that adding a blended winglet increases the pressure difference near the wingtip,which increases the lift force. Also, the blended winglet reduces the power and magnitude of vorticities around the wingtip, which reduces the wing's drag force. The effects of winglets on aerodynamic forces lead to a 3.8% increase in flight range and a 3.6% increase in the maximum payload of the aircraft. Also, the acoustic power level variables on the surfaces and fields around the wing have been investigated integrally and locally.

  • 플랩을 갖는 복합재 평판날개에 대해서 유격 비선형성과 구동장치의 동적 강성을 고려하여 비선형 공탄성 해석을 수행하였다. DHM 방법을 사용하여 아음속 비정상 공기력을 계산하였으며 유격은 기술함수를 적용하여 이선형 스프링으로 가정하였다. 동적 강성을 기어시스템의 지배방정식으로부터 계산하고, 적층각과 재질에 따른 공탄성 특성을 살펴보았다. 선형 및 비선형 공탄성 해석 결과들은 플러터 특성이 유격과 동강성에 따라 크게 달라지는 것을 보여주었다. 다양한 형태의 제한주기거동이 선형플러터 속도 이전과 이후에서 관찰되었다.

  • Gas submerged jet is an outstanding thermohydraulic phenomenon in pool scrubbing of fission products during a severe nuclear accident. Experiments were performed on the hydraulic characteristics in the ranges of air mass flux 0.1-1400 kg/m2s and nozzle diameter 10-80 mm. The results showed that the dependence of inlet pressure on the mass flux follows a power law in subsonic jets and a linear law in sonic jets. The effect of nozzle submerged depth was negligible. The isolated bubbling regime, continuous bubbling regime, transition regime, and jetting regime were observed in turn, as the mass flux increased. In the bubbling regime and jetting regime, the air volume fraction distribution was approximately symmetric in space. Themelis model could capture the jet trajectory well. In the transition regime, the air volume fraction distribution loses symmetry due to the bifurcated secondary plume. The Li correlation and Themelis model showed sufficient accuracy for the prediction of jet penetration length.

MHD Turbulence in ISM and ICM

  • Observations indicate that turbulence in molecular clouds of the interstellar medium (ISM) is highly supersonic (M >> 1) and strongly magnetized (β ≈ 0.1), while in the intracluster medium (ICM) it is subsonic (M <~1) and weakly magnetized (β ≈ 100). Here, M is the turbulent Mach number and β is the ratio of the gas to magnetic pressures. Although magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in such environments has been previously studied through numerical simulations, some of its properties as well as its consequences are not yet fully described. In this talk, we report a study of MHD turbulence in molecular clouds and the ICM using a newly developed code based the high-order accurate, WENO (Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory) scheme. The simulation results using the WENO code are generally in agreement with those presented in the previous studies with, for instance, a TVD code (Porter et al. 2015 &, Park & Ryu 2019), but reveal more detailed structures on small scales. We here present and compare the properties of simulated turbulences with WENO and TVD codes, such as the spatial distribution of density, the density probability distribution functions, and the power spectra of kinetic and magnetic energies. We also describe the populations of MHD shocks and the energy dissipation at the shocks. Finally, we discuss the implications of this study on star formation processes in the ISM and shock dissipation in the ICM.

  • 본 논문에서는 층간분리 현상을 고려한 복합재 미사일 핀의 비선형 천음속 플러터 해석을 수행하였다. 층간분리 효과를 고려한 유한요소 진동해석 기법은 시험 결과와 비교 및 검증하였다. 비선형 천음속 플러터 해석은 자체 개발한 천음속 미소교란 방정식 기반의 시간영역 플러터 해석 프로그램을 개선하여 복합재 날개의 층간분리 효과까지 고려할 수 있도록 확장하여 활용하였다. 복합재 미사일 핀 모델에 대해 층간분리 영역에 따른 아음속, 천음속 및 초음속 플러터 해석을 수행하고 층간분리 영향에 따른 공력탄성학적 특성을 고찰하였다.

The flow around a cavity is characterized as an unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices brought by the interaction between the free stream shear layer and the internal flow of the cavity. The resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect the aerodynamic performance and stability of the vehicle. In this study, a numerical analysis was performed for the cavity flows using the unsteady compressible three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation with Wilcox's turbulence model. The Message Passing Interface (MPI) parallelized code was used for the calculations by PC-cluster. The cavity has aspect ratios (L/D) of 5.5 ~ 7.5 with width ratios (W/D) of 2 ~ 4. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are 0.4 ~ 0.6 and $1.6{\times}10^6$, respectively. The occurrence of oscillation is observed in the "shear layer and transient mode" with a feedback mechanism. Based on the Sound Pressure Level (SPL) analysis of the pressure variation at the cavity trailing edge, the dominant frequencies are analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's formula. The dominant frequencies are very similar to the result of Rossiter's formula and other experimental datum in the low aspect ratio cavity (L/D = ~4.5). In the high aspect ratio cavity, however, there are other low dominant frequencies of the leading edge shear layer with the dominant frequencies of the feedback mechanism.

항공기내 연료 및 오일온도 변화에 대한 수치해석적 연구 (A Numerical Analysis on Transient Temperatures of Fuel and Oil in a Military Aircraft)

  • A transient analysis on temperatures of fuel and oil in hydraulic and lubrication systems in an aircraft was studied using the finite difference method. Numerical calculation was performed by an explicit method with modified Dufort-Frankel scheme. Among various missions, air superiority mission was considered as a mission model with 20% hot day ambient condition in subsonic region. The ambience of the aircraft was assumed as turbulent flow. Convective heat transfer coefficient were used in calculating heat transfer between the aircraft surface and the ambience. For an aircraft on the ground, an empirical equation represented as a function of free-stream air velocity was used. And the heat transfer coefficient for flat plate turbulent flow suggested by Eckert was employed for in-flight phases. The governing equations used in this analysis are the mass and energy conservation equations on fuel and oils. Here, analysis of fuel and oil temperature in the engine was not carried out. As a result of this analysis, the ground operation phase has shown the highest temperature and the largest rate of temperature increase among overall mission phases. Also, it is shown that fuel flow rate through fuel/oil heat exchanger plays an important role in temperature change of fuel and oil. This analysis could be an important part of studies to ensure thermal stability of the aircraft and can be applicable to thermal design of the aircraft fuel system.

곡면상에 설치된 열린 공동을 지나는 천음속/초음속 유동에 관한 연구 (I) - 정상 유동의 특성 - (Investigation of Transonic and Supersonic Flows over an Open Cavity Mounted on Curved Wall (I) - Steady Flow Characteristics -)

  • 공동유동은 종래 많은 연구가 수행되었으나 대부분의 연구는 공동 상류의 압력구배가 없는 수평면 상에 위치한 공동 유동에 대한 연구가 수행되어 왔으며, 실제 공학적 응용에서 나타나는 곡면 벽상에 위치한 공동 유동에 대한 연구는 거의 수행되지 않고 있다. 일반적으로 곡면 벽상에 위치한 공동유동에는 원심력이 작용하여 종래의 공동 유동 연구결과와 상이한 유동특성을 가질 것으로 판단되나, 이러한 데이터는 지금까지 보고되지 않았다. 본 연구에서는 곡면 벽상에 설치한 공동 유동을 수치해석법으로 조사하여 곡면의 곡률반경 및 유동의 마하수가 천음속 및 초음속 공동유동의 특성에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 그 결과 곡면의 곡률반경이 작아질수록, 유동의 마하수가 증가할수록, 공동내부에서 발생하는 피크압력의 크기는 증가하였으며 공동으로 인한 전압력손실 증가한다는 것을 확인할 수 있다.

  • LEX를 가진 델타형 날개 모델을 사용한 풍동실험을 통하여 LEX가 델타형 날개 윗면의 표면압력분포에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 풍동실험의 유속은 40m/sec, 전압과 전온도는 각각 101Pa, 278K이었으며, 단위길이당 레이놀즈 수는 $1.76{\times}10^6$이었다. LEX는 날개의 표면압력분포를 매우 많이 변화시키었다. LEX가 없는 경우에 비하여 표면압력의 피크치가 시위 앞부분에서는 감소하였으나 뒷부분으로 갈수록 그리고 받음각이 증가할수록 피크치도 증가하였다. 스팬방향 압력구배도 시위 앞부분에서는 완만하였으나 뒤로 갈수록 증가하였다. 또한 LEX가 있는 경우에는 모든 위치에서 받음각의 증가에 따라 표면압력 피크치도 거의 선형적으로 증가하였다.
