  • ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ spherical particles having an average diameter of ca. 420 nm and ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ fine particles (< 10 ${\mu}m$ particle size) were prepared to examine as catalysts for CO oxidation. Kinetic studies on the catalytic reactions were performed in a flow reactor using an on-line gas chromatography system operated at 1 atm. The apparent activation energies and the partial orders with respect to CO and $O_2$ were determined from the rates of CO disappearance in the reaction stage showing a constant catalytic activity. In the temperature range of $150-275^{\circ}C$, the apparent activation energies were calculated to be 13.7 kcal/mol on the ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ spherical submicron clusters and 15.0 kcal/mol on the ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ fine powder. The Pco and $Po_2$ dependencies of rate were investigated at various partial pressures of CO and $O_2$ at $250^{\circ}C$. Zero-order kinetics were observed for $O_2$ on both the catalysts, but the reaction order for CO was observed as first-order on the ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ fine powder and 0.75-order on the ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ spherical submicron clusters. The catalytic processes including the inhibition process by $CO_2$ on the ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ spherical submicron powder are discussed according to the kinetic results. The catalysts were characterized using XRD (X-ray powder diffraction), FE-SEM (field emission-scanning electron microscopy), HR-TEM (high resolution-transmission electron microscopy), and $N_2$ sorption measurements.

  • Reducing the particle size of drug materials down to submicron is an important matter in pharmaceutical industry. Cryogenic milling technology is one of the mechanical milling processes, which is mostly utilized in refining grain size of metal and ceramics at extremely low temperature environment. This technique has not been readily studied in application to medical and biotechnology. This paper, therefore, describes the application of cryogenic milling process to reduce particle size of Ibuprofen. The shape and size of the Ibuprofen particle before and after the cryogenic ball milling process were analyzed. XRD analysis was performed to examine a change in crystallinity of Ibuprofen by the cryogenic ball milling process. The results showed that the size of Ibuprofen particles was reduced to 1/10 or less of its initial size. The results also showed that the degree of crystallinity of Ibuprofen was slightly reduced after cryogenic ball milling with nitrogen

  • Condensation particle counter (CPC) has been one of the most important basic instrument for measuring number concentration of submicron aerosols. The principle of the CPC is to expose aerosols to a supersaturated vapor and cool down which causes adiabatic expansion. The particles grow by heterogenous nucleation to a sufficient size for easy detection by optical method. However, for growth by condensation, CPC essentially needs both saturater and condensor causing a heavy system. Therefore, it is hard to install commercial CPC to tethered balloon package system. In this study, we developed customized CPC for tethered balloon package system called Hy-CPC which is lighter and smaller in structure than commercial CPCs, and evaluated activation efficiency and detection efficiency by Hy-CPC using electrostatic method (electrometer and Faraday cup).

  • In this study, ball milling process was applied to reduce the particle size of bio-material down to submicron size. The material used was Ibuprofen. The ball milling was performed at low temperature of about $-180^{\circ}C$. The effect of processing conditions (milling time, milling speed) on the particle size was determined. The results showed that the degree of crystallite of Ibuprofen was slightly reduced by the ball milling process. The results also showed that the size of Ibuprofen was significantly reduced by the ball milling process. The effect of milling time was significant within the milling time of six hours while it was small thereafter.

• Electrospinning is a novel process for forming fibers with submicron scale diameters through the action of electrical force. In the previous study, we performed study on the ultrafine PVDF nanofiber production in the stable spinning condition. Recently it would be great interest to fabricate IP(inorganic particle) assemblies in nanofibe. since such IP/nanofiber hybrid materials might be used in a nonwoven form as nanowires, medical gauges for bums healing and cell growing, sensors, chemical and gas filteration. • With the advent of ULSI, many problems in previous metallization techniques and interconnection materials have become more serious. In this work, selective deposition of copper to fill the submicron contact has been tried. After forming electro-deposited copper films on p-type (100) silicon wafer using 0.75M $CuSO_4{\cdot}$5H_2O$ as an electrolyte, the effect of deposition time, current density and concentration of an additive on film properties were investigated. Film thickness, particle size and resistivity were analyzed by Alpha Step, SEM and 4 - point probe measurement respectively. The deposition rate was about $0.5-0.6\mu\textrm{m}$/min at $2A/dm^2$ and the particle size increased with increasing current density. The resistivities of electro-deposited copper films were about $3-6{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}$cm for the particle size above $4000{\AA}$. By the addition of 0.2 g/l gelatin, the particle size was reduced to less than $0.1{\mu}m $ and selective plugging of copper on submicron contacts could be successfully achieved.

  • Physico-chemical measurement of non-refractory submicron particles($NR-PM_1$) was conducted in Baengnyeong Island, Korea using Aerodyne High Resolution Time of Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) from 2012 to 2014. Organics and ammoniated sulfate were dominant species in $NR-PM_1$. The organics was found to have similar fractions(approximate 40%) of $NR-PM_1$ during the summer and winter, while the sulfate fractions of $NR-PM_1$ were calculated to be approximately 47% and 31% for the summer and winter, respectively, suggesting the possibility that particles provide non-acidic surfaces for condensation of nitric acid in the winter. The nitrate fractions of approximate 4% and 20% of $NR-PM_1$ were observed in August (summer) and November (winter), respectively, resulting that the relatively low concentration of sulfate in $NR-PM_1$ provided a non-acidic surface for nitric acid condensation and formation of particulate ammoniated nitrate is favored thermodynamically in winter. The new particle formation (NPF) event and particle growth rate were analyzed for each month in 2014 using Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer(SMPS). The Percent of NPF events was the highest in winter, but NPF event was not observed during summer due to relatively high temperature and frequent rainfall. The average particle growth rate was 3.5 nm/h and the highest particle growth rate was 5.5 nm/h in May. We observed the long-range transport of the anthropogenic sulfate from the East Asia during the intensive monitoring period of November between Qingdao and Baengnyeong Island in 2013. The relatively high concentrations of m/z 60 measured in HR-ToF-AMS was observed in May and June at Baengnyeong Island, suggesting the possibility of the influence of biomass burning from the East Asia to the Korean Peninsula.

  • Spinel, mullite and cordierite powders have synthesized from Mg(NO3)2.6H2O, Al(NO3).9H2O and SiCl4 solution by spray pyrolysis method. The two-fluid nozzle was used as an atomizer. The powders of sinel and mullite were synthesized above 80$0^{\circ}C$, but the cordierite composition was noncrystalline for all synthersizing temperature. Those noncrystalline powders were crystallized to $\alpha$-cordierite during calcining at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. The synthesized spinel, mullite and cordierite powders seem to be consisted of agglomerated hollow spherical particles. For all powders, the particle size ranged from submicron to about 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and mean particle size was about 1.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter. The specific surface area values of spinel, mullite and cordierite powders were maximum for powders prepared at 100$0^{\circ}C$, and those were 45.9, 25.8 and 13.6$m^2$/gr, respectively.
