  • This paper demonstrates the key parameter detection for smelting of submerged arc furnace (SAF) based on magnetic field radiation. A magnetic field radiation model for the inner structure of SAF is established based on relative theory of electromagnetic field. A simple equipment of 3D magnetic field detection system is developed by theoretical derivation and simulation. The experiments are carried out under the environment of industrial field and AC magnetic field generated by electrode currents and molten currents in the furnace is reflected outside of the furnace. The experimental results show that the key parameters of smelting including the position of electrode tip, the length of electric arc, and the liquid level of molten bath can be achieved. The computed tomography for SAF can be realized by the detection for smelting.

  • There are many studies about submerged structures or porous wave absorbers to decrease damage of coast and structures. Submerged structures and porous wave absorber are decreasing energy of incoming wave by reflecting or dissipation with changing depth or with porous rubble mound. This study addresses the reflection and transmission of long wave from a trapezoidal breakwater and a vertical porous wave absorber at the same time. A systematic shape transfer is derived to determine wave reflection and transmission. And periodic solutions are matched at the slope and the front face of the absorber by assuming continuity of pressure and mass. The transmission coefficient is determined as a function of parameters describing the incoming waves, transmitting waves through the trapezoidal breakwater and the absorber characteristics.

  • Concepts of submerged floating tunnels (SFTs) for land connection have been continuously suggested and developed by several researchers and institutes. To maintain their predefined positions under various dynamic environmental loading conditions, the submerged floating tunnels should be effectively moored by reasonable mooring systems. With rational mooring systems, the design of SFTs should be confirmed to satisfy the structural safety, fatigue, and operability design criteria related to tunnel motion, internal forces, structural stresses, and the fatigue life of the main structural members. This paper presents a feasibility study of a submerged floating tunnel moored by an inclined tendon system. The basic structural concept was developed based on the concept of conventional cable-stayed bridges to minimize the seabed excavation, penetration, and anchoring work by applying tower-inclined tendon systems instead of conventional tendons with individual seabed anchors. To evaluate the structural performance of the new type of SFT, a hydrodynamic analysis was performed in the time domain using the commercial nonlinear finite element code ABAQUS-AQUA. For the main dynamic environmental loading condition, an irregular wave load was examined. A JONSWAP wave spectrum was used to generate a time-series wave-induced hydrodynamic load considering the specific significant wave height and peak period for predetermined wave conditions. By performing a time-domain hydrodynamic analysis on the submerged floating structure under irregular waves, the motional characteristics, structural stresses, and fatigue damage of the floating tunnel and mooring members were analyzed to evaluate the structural safety and fatigue performance. According to the analytical study, the suggested conceptual model for SFTs shows very good hydrodynamic structural performance. It can be concluded that the concept can be considered as a reasonable structural type of SFT.

  • This study is to investigate the variation characteristics of run-up height over sandy beach due to the plane distribution of submerged breakwaters. In this study, Three-Dimensional numerical model with Large Eddy Simulation, which is able to simulate directly WAve Structure Seabed interaction (hereafter, LES-WASS-3D) has been newly developed. A comparison between the numerical model and existing experimental results was made to verify accuracy of newly proposed LES-WASS-3D model, and showed fairly nice agreement. In addition, based on the LES-WASS-3D model, the variation characteristics of run-up height over sandy beach are discussed with relation to the offshore distance and opening width of submerged breakwaters.

  • The aim of this study was to survey the effects of the beachface gradient on 3-D currents around the open inlets of submerged breakwaters. First, the numerical model was validated by a comparison with existing experimental data. This model is able to consider the flow through a porous medium with inertial, laminar, and turbulent resistance terms, i.e. simulate directly WAve?Structure?Seabed/Sandy beach interaction, and can determine the eddy viscosity with a LES turbulent model in a 3-Dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-3D). Using the numerical results of this model, the 3-D currents around the open inlets of submerged breakwaters were examined in relation to the beachface gradient. Moreover, the wave height distribution and mean flow around them are also discussed, as well as the distribution of the wave breaking points over the crest.

  • The head-capacity curves for pumps developed by the pump manufacturer are based on tests of a single pump operating in a semi-infinite basin with no close walls or floors and with no stray currents. Therefore, flow into the pump intake is with no vortices or swirling. However, pump station designers relying on these curves to define the operating conditions for the pump selected sometimes meet the reductions of capacity and efficiency, as well as the increase of vibration and additional noise, which were caused by air-entered flow in the pump station. From this background, the authors are carrying out a systematic study on the flow characteristics of intakes within a sump of pump station model. Multi-intake sump model with anti-submerged vortex device basin is designed and the characteristics of submerged vortex is investigated in the flow field by numerical simulation. In this study, a commercial CFD code is used to predict the vortex generation in the pump station accurately. The analysed results by CFD show that the vortex structure and effect of anti-submerged vortex device are different at each pump intake channel.

  • A submerged breakwater is one of the coastal structures used to reduce wave energy and coastal erosion. However, a submerged breakwater has a negative aspect in that a strong rip current occurring around an open inlet due to a difference in mean water levels at the front and rear sides of the structure leads to scouring. Such scouring has a bad effect on its stability. In order to eliminate this kind of demerit, this study investigated an artificial reef of the overflow type with openings. We also developed a program where the flows around the artificial reef of the overflow type could be analyzed numerically. An unstructured grid system was used to cover the various geometries, and the level set method was applied to treat the movement of the free surface. To verify these numerical schemes, hydraulic physical tests were performed on the submerged breakwater and double breaking type artificial reef. Then, the wave height and velocity distribution around the reef were examined using the experimental results. Comparisons between the results of hydraulic and numerical tests showed reasonable agreement.
