  • This paper dealt with an experimental study on the hydroelastic vibration of clamped perforated rectangular plates submerged in water. The penetration of holes in the plates had a triangular pattern with P/D (pitch to diameter) 1.750, 2.125, 2.500, 3.000 and 3.750. The natural frequencies of the perforated plates in air were obtained by the analytical method based on the relation between the reference kinetic and maximum potential energies and compared with the experimental results. • Some mechanical properties of the submerged arc-welded(SAW) zone between different kinds of metal (SS400+SB450) are investigated and compared with that between same kinds of metal (SS400+SS400 and SB450+SB450). The analysis of the chemical components and observation of the micro-structure by SEM of the weld zone are also carried out. And the effect of the stress relief annealing is examined by comparing tensile strength, elongation, toughness add hardness of SAW specimens before and after the heat treatment.

  • A theoretical formulation is performed to investigate the wave reflection and transmission ratios by a submerged multi-layered rubble-mound breakwater. This theory, which is based on the linear boundary integral method, can be extended to the multi-layered breakwater with arbitrary cross section. In the theoretical analysis evanescent mode wave is not considered, since fictitious open boundaries are put on the places far from the structure. Therefore the mathematical presentation may be simpler, and computational time shorter. The validity of obtained numerical results is demonstrated by comparing with ones of impermeable and permeable breakwaters. Comparison shows resonable agreement. On the basis of these verifications this theory is applied to the one and two-layered submerged rubble-mound breakwater with trapezoidal type.

  • An experimental study was performed for two types of co-axial cylindrical shell structures in order to establish the relationship between in-air dynamic characteristics and in-water ones and to observe hydrodynamic mass effects on their mode shapes when submerged. The outer cylinders are prepared with two kinds to get more insights on the fluid-structure interaction phenomena: one is flexible, which means that the outer cylinder has almost same stiffness as the inner one, and the other is a rigid one whose stiffness is more than ten times of the inner one's(it might be regarded as the scaled-down model of the reactor internals). The finite element. analyses were also implemented to support the experimental results. The results show that the natural frequencies of a co-axial cylindrical shell structure in water are remarkably lower than those in air due to the fluid mass effects. In case of the flexible-to-flexible cylinders, there exist in-phase and out-of-phase mode shapes and they are affected by the annular gap between the. co-axial cylinders. For the in-phase mode the in-water natural frequency decreases exponentially as the gap increases, while it slightly increases in case of the out-of-phase mode due to the squeezing effect of the gap fluid. In the flexible-to-rigid case, the normalized natural frequency(in-water frequency/in-air one) of the inner cylinder(core barrel model) ranges between in-phase and out-of-phase mode frequencies of the flexible-to-flexible co-axial cylindrical structure having identical dimensions. Also the normalized natural frequency of the inner cylinder of the flexible-to-rigid one moves from near of the in-phase mode frequency into the out-of-phase mode value of the flexible-to-flexible case as circumferential mode number(n) increases.

  • In this study, nonlinear wave interaction in the presence of a uniform current is studied using numerical model, named CADMAS-SURF which is based on the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with Volume of Fluid for tracking free surface deformation. The original CADMAS-SURF developed for interaction of wave with structure is modified/extended to simulate nonlinear fluid dynamic motions within wave-current coexisting field. The capability of Numerical Wave-Current Tank (NWCT) in this study is validated by comparing with available existing laboratory experiments for both wave-following and wave-opposing current. The numerical results for interaction between wave and current are shown to be in good agreement with experimental data. Then, this study focused on the dynamic motions of the water velocity, surface elevation and vorticity within combined wave-current field in demonstrating complex nonlinear physical phenomena due to interaction between wave and current. In addition, NWCT is applied to simulate a more complex wave-current-structure field for wave propagating over a submerged breakwater associated with current. Detailed discussion including characteristics of velocity and vorticity fields and the relation between free surface and vorticity are given.

  • In this study, the nonlinear interaction of irregular waves with wave breaking and currents around permeable submerged breakwater was investigated with the aid of olaFlow model which is open source CFD software published under the GPL license. The irregular wave performance of olaFlow applied in this study was verified by comparing and evaluating the target frequency spectrum and the generated frequency spectrum for applicability to irregular waves. Based on the applicability of this numerical model to irregular wave fields, in the coexistence fields of irregular waves and currents, the characteristics of wave height, frequency spectrum, breaking waves, averaged velocity and turbulent kinetic energy around porous submerged breakwater with the respect to the beach type and current direction versus wave propagation were carefully investigated. The numerical results revealed that the shape of wave breaking on the crown of the submerged breakwater and the formation of the mean flow velocity around the structure depend greatly on the current directions and the type of the beach. In addition, it was found that the wave height fluctuation due to the current direction with respect to the wave propagation is closely related to the turbulent kinetic energy.

  • When the seabed around and under gravity structures such as submerged breakwater is exposed to a large wave action long period, the excess pore pressure is generated significantly due to pore volume change associated with rearrangement soil grains. This effect leads a seabed liquefaction around and under structures as a result from decrease in the effective stress, and the possibility of structure failure is increased eventually. These facts shown above have been investigated in the previous studies related to regular and irregular waves. This study suggested a concrete mat for preventing the seabed liquefaction near the submerged breakwater. The concrete mat was mainly used as a countermeasure for scouring protection in riverbed. According to installation of the concrete mattress, the time and spatial series of the deformation of submerged breakwater, the pore water pressure, and the pore water pressure ratio in the seabed were investigated. Their results were also compared with those of the seabed unprotected with the concrete mat. The results presented were confirmed that the liquefaction potential of seabed under the concrete mattress is significantly reduced under regular wave field.

  • On the many coasts of South Korea, including the eastern side, it has been recently increasing the coastal disaster such as the severe coastal erosion and road damage swept away by the wave. As one of the alternatives to prevent the coastal disaster, it has been widely studied the coastal disaster reduction method by the Low-Crested Structure (LCS) in the many countries including several European countries. In this study, the olaFLow model is used to simulate the permeable LCS and wave field of the LCS through the three-dimensional irregular waves numerical analysis on the basis of the previous research. From the numerical analysis, it is evaluated the Hrms, nearshore current and time-averaged turbulent kinetic energy. In addition, the pattern of nearshore current and spatial distribution of time-averaged turbulent kinetic energy are compared with the case of submerged breakwater under the irregular wave fields. As one of significant results, it is confirmed that the pattern of nearshore current is different with the case of submerged breakwater.

  • The dynamics of microbial community structure of the various domestic wastewater treatment processes were examined using a novel approach of quinone profiles. The compositions of microbial quinone of 5 sites fer plant and lab-scale activated sludge were analyzed. More than 14 kinds of quinones were observed in the activated sludges tested in this study. The microbial community structure of the plant activated sludge processes a little differed from that of the lab-scale submerged MBR systems. The dominant quinones were UQ-8, UQ-10 followed $MK-8(H_4)$, MK-7 and MK-6. The molar ratio of ubiquinones to menaquinones (UQ/MK) changed from 0.81 to 1.9, indicating that aerobic bacteria dominated the microbial community of the activated sludge examined. The microbial diversity of the activated sludges calculated from the all quinone compositions was 9.5-11.9 and the microbial equability of the activated sludges was 0.64-0.79.
