We analyzed the effect of changing water level and turbidity on plants that serve to maintain slope stability on levees. In this experiment, soil collected from upstream of Imha Dam was placed in a water tank and planted with river plants of the Salix species: Salix gracilistyla, S. koreensis, and S. glanduosa. Plant regrowth was analyzed stage-by-stage during a recovery period. In addition, we assessed the tolerance of the plants to concentrated torrential rainfall and examined their recovery rates. The results indicate that in the case of these three Salix species, which are the most prevalent river plants in Korea, stem growth is arrested following serious damage and high turbidity. The possibility of regrowth was very low during the 20-day non-submerged recovery period. Although the number of leaves initially decreased during this period, subsequent regrowth was reasonably high: recovery in S. gracilistyla, S. koreensis, and S. glanduosa was up to 59.3%, 251.3%, and 148.4% respectively, compared with the initial condition.
Immobilization and mineralization of the tracer nitrogen $^{15}(NH_4)_2SO_4$ applied in submerged soil condition with compost and rice straw to coarse loamy and clay soils were studied at different amounts of applied nitrogen. About 90-, 60-, and 50% of added nitrogen were immobilized at the 10 days of incubation when 0.8-, 1.6-, and 2.4mg of fertilizer nitrogen were added with compost and rice straw in both of coarse loamy and clay soils, respectively. Especially, more pronounced immobilization took place in coarse loamy soil than clay soil. Results obtained from nitrogen fraction showed that the mineral nitrogen was increased with addition of rice straw in clay soil than coarse loamy soil. The amount and index of aminosugar-N and humin-N were variable between soil series and organic matter. Especially, more pronounced amounts of amino acid-N and unknown-N were observed with application of rice straw in coarse loamy soil and compost in clay soil, respectively.

An efficient and accurate scheme has been constructed by taking advantages of the hi-quadratic spline scheme and the higher-order boundary element method selectively depending on computation domains. Boundary surfaces are represented by 8-node boundary elements to describe curved surfaces of a ship and its neighboring free surface more accurately. The variation of the velocity potential complies with the characteristics of the 8-node element on the body surface. But on the free surface, it is assumed to follow that of the hi-quadratic spline scheme. By which, the free surface solution is free from numerical damping and has better numerical dispersion property. As numerical examples, steady and unsteady Neumann-Kelvin problems are considered. Numerical results for a submerged spheroid, Series 60($C_B=0.6$) and a modified support the proposed method. Finally, a new upstream radiation condition is derived using a wave equation operator in order to deal with problems for subcritical reduced frequency. The relevance of this operator has been confirmed in the case of unsteady Kelvin source potential.

The internal flow of a pump system that is installed in the interior of large vessels such as tankers is largely affected by the water level and flow conditions of the pump sump. However, the performance of the pump is generally evaluated with the consideration of only the performance of the pump itself, without considering the pumping station operating environment. Therefore, if the pump is affected by the incoming flow that exhibits vortex and swirl, the occurrence of vortex and swirl accompanied with air may cause problems with the pump sump. This effect of flow condition can lead to a decrease in efficiency, increase in vibration, and noise generation in the pump. In this study, to investigate the internal flow of the pump sump according to several water levels, a pump sump scale-model was designed and constructed. The frequency of vortex occurrence and the shape of the vortex were investigated according to the different water levels of a fundamental test. The Class C vortex type, which has a larger volume of air intake to the pump, was confirmed by the higher occurrence frequency at a relatively lower water level.
The results of these experiments which were carried out to investigate the effects of rice straw for nitrogen metabolism and acetylene reducing activity, during rice plants were cultured under the percolated condition, are as follows. Azotobacter had tendency to increase with the passage of time, but decreased when rice straw was added. Population change of Clostridia was little as rice grew. Blue green algae increased until heading stage but decreased after the stage. And the application of rice straw increased the number of microorganisms. Thiorhodaceae were never detected, but yeast tended to increase slightly with passing time. Acetylene reducing activity was increased with increasing the number of nitrogen fixing microorganisms, and nitrogen fixing activity was between 0.2kg N/10 a and 0.4kg N/10 a during the growing season of rice plants. Though acetylene reducing activity was promoted by the use of rice plants on non-plant area, but the activity was not clearly affected by percolation.

More stable and higher yields in rice paddy depend mainly upon an adequately balanced supply of water for higher yield. Rice paddy is supplied naturally by rainfall but inevitably requires artificial supplenental irrigation for higher yields. Even though it may be true that the water requirement of rice plants is generally higher than those of other crops, the submerged condition is not necessarily required for rice. The moisture requirements of rice vary according to its growing stages and it is possible to increse the irrigation efficiency by means of lessening the loss due to percolation and evapolation in the field. This experiment was conducted on the effect of the various amount of water supply and different irrigation periods for yield and yield components, and was carried out to find out the most suitable irrigation method and to increase the irrigation efficiency for higher yields in rice paddy. Randomized block design with 3 replications was employed where the 3 levels of the amount of irrigation water; (120% moisture contents), unirrigated (90~100%) and more un irrigated candition (80~90% moisture content), and levels of the various irrigation periods; usual, initial, intermediate and final periods, being treated. The results obtained in this experiment are as follows: 1. As for the physical and chemical and soil properfies, and other characteristics, there are no differences among the treatments enough to be effective for the growth of rice plants. 2. Culm length was measured after harvest as shown in table 2. 3. Difference of the amount of irrigation water did not change the culm length and ear length, however it also indicated more apparent increase in final treatment plots thatn that of usual. 3. No difference in the number of ears and number of ears pers per hill was founded treatments both in the difference of water supply and in the various irrigation periods. 4. There is no difference in the maturing rate and 1000 grains weight. 5. The number of panicles and grains and more increased in 80~100% moisture contents soil than those of 120%. and it shows in un irrigated plots, more irrigated plots and control plots in turn. Other wise according to the period\ulcorner of irrigation the trend is appeared in turn initial, usual, final and intermediate treatments.6. Yield as shown in table 7. 8 was more increased in unirrigated plots(90~IOO% moisture content) than the control plots (120% moisture content) by up to 8.2% and also 3. 2% in more unirrigated plots than that of control by periods is shown: usual plots final, initial, inter mediate treatment plots in turn. 7. The above resutts lead to the conclusion that no remarkable, differences in yields and soil properties are made by the unirrigation. However, it is apparent that this treatment has .some advantages in the points that one could spare the amount of water supply for irrigation with more increase in yield. In addition, a higher temperature and a brisk oxygen supply would be possible throug h this treatments. Accordingly, these treatment would be a more reasonable and economical cultivation method of rice for the better harvest.
Meretrix lusoria is one of the most favorite edible bivalves inhabiting wide inter-tidal flats along the western coast of Korea. Over the period of July to September 1973, some specimens from a tidal flat near AnMyun Island were submerged in sea water with various concentrations of ammo-mum hydroxide added and careful observations were made on their fertilization, early development, and metamorphosis of the larvae. The highest rate of fertilization was demonstrated by individuals treated with 1/1000 normal solution of ammonium hydroxide, and their fertilized eggs followed normal development, i. e., two cell stage in 1.2 hours after fertilization, gastrula stage after 4.7 hours, and trochophore stage after 5.6 hours. Within 24 hours after fertilization M. lusoria larvae have acquired the form of early straight-hinge veliger with the mean prodissoconch I length of $112\mu$. It takes seven days to get the umbo stage with the mean shell length of $172\mu$ and twenty days to get the metamorphosing stage with the mean shell length of $232\mu$. The larvae were cultured to the metamorphosing stage with the shell length of $272\mu$ in the laboratory condition. The relationship between the shell length (L) and the shell height (H) in veliger stage is shown as H=1.02325L-24.46425 with a significant difference.
The spore of Aspergillus niger KCTC-6144 was immobilized on alginate gel beads. When pumpkin powder was used with glucose for a medium of citric acid fermentation by Aspergillus niger beads, the beaded Aspergilus niger grew up inside the bead and mycelia penetrated through the pore of the bead membrane. The bead size became largely from 2.0∼2.5mm to 6∼8mm after growing at 30$\^{C}$ for 4 days. Studies of optimum culture conditions on citric acid fermentation using Aspergillus niger beads on pumpkin medium (pumpkin powder 1% +glucose 7%, pH 6.0) were carried out in submerged cultures on 250m1 Erlenmeyer flask. As a result, it was found that to reinforce 12% as carbon source was good for citric acid production and that 1% pumpkin powder was good as nitrogen and mineral source in orbital shaker (150rpm) at 30$\^{C}$ for 5 days. The optimum initial pH on citric acid production was pH 6.0 and it was found that 100 beads of immobilized Aspergillus niger was adequate for citric acid production in a 250ml Erlenmeyer flask containing 50m3 of pumpkin medium solution with orbital shaker at 30$\^{C}$ for 5 days. We also found that maximal production of citric acid was 23.5g/ℓ at optimal condition (at 30$\^{C}$ for 5 days, pH 6.0, and 100 beads and medium containing 1% pumpkin powder plus 12% glucose).
Turbulence structure and suspended sediment transport capacity in vegetated open-channel flows are investigated numerically in the present paper. The $\textsc{k}-\;\varepsilon$ model is employed for the turbulence closure. Mean velocity and turbulence characteristics including turbulence intensity, Reynolds stress, and production and dissipation of turbulence kinetic energy are evaluated and compared with measurement data available in the literature. The numerical results show that mean velocity is diminished due to the drag provided by vegetation, which results in the reduction of turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress. For submerged vegetation, the shear at the top of vegetation dominates turbulence production, and the turbulence production within vegetation is characterized by wakes. For emergent condition, it is observed that the turbulence generation is dominated by wakes within vegetation. In general, simulated profiles compares favorably to measured data. Computed values of eddy viscosity are used to solve the conservation equation for suspended sediment, yielding sediment concentration more uniform over the depth compared with the one in the plain channel. The simulation reveals that the suspended load decreases as the vegetation density increases and the suspended load increases as the particle diameter decreases for the same vegetation density.

Though MBR process has many advantages, the greatest risk factors in operating MBR process are occurrence of membrane fouling and decrease of flux. It is very difficult to find exact mechanism due to complex influence by many effects, although there have been recently many studies of membrane fouling. The purposes of this study are firstly evaluating bioreactor of lab-scale and micro-filtration hollow fiber membrane, secondly investigating correlation between foulants affecting membrane performance and membrane fouling, and lastly evaluating various parameters affecting fouling and applicability of membrane fouling reducer. This study found that TMP was increasing rapidly and showed 0.32 bar and the average of flux was 88 LMH. EPS concentration tends not to change much above MLSS concentration (6,000 mg/L). However, EPS concentration variation is wide below MLSS concentration (6,000 mg/L). Also, from results of membrane surface condition and element analysis using SEM/EDX, carbon and fluorine were founded to be the highest percentage in membrane because of characteristics of membrane material. In operating continuously, inorganic fouling was generated by increase of these inorganic substances such as $Al^{3+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$. Lastly, the best filtration performance was obtained for 0.03 mg MFR/mg MLSS by results of particle size, zeta potential, $SCOD_{cr}$, EPS and MLSS concentration.
