  • This paper describes qualities of a library classification system that are commonly discussed in the LIS tradition and literature, and explains such a system’s three main functions, namely knowledge mapping, information retrieval, and shelf arrangement. In this vein, the paper states the functional requirements of bibliographic classifications, which broadly are subject collocation and facilitation of browsing the collection. It explains with details the components of a library classification system and their functions. The major components are schedules, notations, and index. It also states their distinguished features, such as generalia class, form divisions, book numbers, and devices for number synthesis which are not required in a knowledge classification. It illustrates with examples from the WebDewey good examples of added features of an online library classification system. It emphasizes that institutional backup and a revision machinery are essential for a classification to survive and remain relevant in the print and e-environment.

  • The majority of text categorization systems use the term-based classification method. However, because of too many terms, this method is not effective to classify the documents in areal-time environment. This paper presents a real-time concept-based text categorization system, which classifies texts using thesaurus. The system consists of a Korean morphological analyzer, athesaurus tool, and a probability-vector similarity measurer. The thesaurus tool acquires the meaningsof input terms and represents the text with not the term-vector but the concept-vector. Because theconcept-vector consists of semantic units with the small size, it makes the system enable to analyzethe text with real-time. As representing the meanings of the text, the vector supports theconcept-based classification. The probability-vector similarity measurer decides the subject of the textby calculating the vector similarity between the input text and each subject. In the experimentalresults, we show that the proposed system can effectively analyze texts with real-time and do aconcept-based classification. Moreover, the experiment informs that we must expand the thesaurustool for the better system.

  • The present study examines the characteristics of the international literature of classification systems published in the period 1981-1990. The references in the 'Classification Literature' sections of International Classification and the references in these source items were examined. The present study focused on analyzing each of the following characteristics: format, subject, language, geographical origin, age, authorship and number of references. The findings from the data analyses show clearly that in the literature of classification systems, I) books were the most frequently cited format; 2) library and information science was the most frequently cited subject; 3) English was the major language; 4) the literature of each classification system was written predominently in English except for Library Bibliographic Classification; 5) the language of each source item was the same as that of the greatest number of references of that source item: 6) the U.S., Germany, India, Russia, and the U.K. were the major geographic origin of publication; 7) there was a very close relationship between country of publication and language: 8) the country of origin of the documents was cited more than any other country except for the U.S.: 9) Price's Index of the literature revealed that the literature was a soft science and the half-life of the literature was about 7.5 years; 10) there was a preponderance of single authorships; 11) the literature was not a scholarly or scientific literature, according to the average number of references in source items and the percentage of unreferenced items. The findings of this reference study provide a better understanding of the characteristics of the classification systems literature. They prove useful for the collection development and assist classification systems researchers to prepare linguistically for their careers and encourage international communication efforts.

  • This study tries to compare the classification systems of major internet portals and their sub-portals specialized for the children and of major online book stores. It compares and analyzes the major directories of them and suggests recommendations not only to improve their own systems but also to apply to the development for the classification systems for children's library. Some of them are: (1) The system should reflect information requests and use behaviors of the children netizen. (2) It should select the terms reflecting the children's viewpoints and expressions and suggest the guidelines by ages. (3) It should maintain the clear hierarchies and grouping for the accessability and convenience of the users. (4) It will be helpful to establish the categories to mix the subject- or concept-based categories and the activities and objects of the children. (5) It will also be helpful to establish the categories based on the curricula added by those creating the imagination and interest and to subdivide by subject.

  • Objectives: We evaluated the learning objectives of dental hygiene courses based on Bloom's learning objectives, and analyze the degree of match with the dental hygienist's job for each detailed subject. Methods: The 5th edition of 'Dental hygiene and learning objectives' was analyzed by subject based on Bloom's cognitive domain classification from March 10 to April. In addition, the degree of match between the contents of the secondary job analysis of the dental hygienist and the learning objectives for each detailed subject were analyzed. Results: The total number of dental hygiene learning objectives was 2,975 (2,762 theory, 52 practice). Among the cognitive domains, the comprehension domain was the most common (79.8%), and the skill domain was very low (4.9%). In the job for each detailed subject of dental hygiene, the most frequently performed was 'dental prophylaxis and practice' with 103 subjects. Conclusions: Overall, dental hygiene learning objectives are mostly theory-oriented, so it is necessary to expand and improve in the direction related to the jobs that clinical dental hygienists perform in the field. In addition, it is necessary to continuously develop timely learning goals, and prepare active strategies for developing high-quality items.

  • This study intends to : 1) confirm the possibility to transform the enumerated scheme into the faceted scheme, 2) review general theories on facet structure employed in DDC of the enumerated scheme, 3) analyze the facet structure of life science and literature in DDC, and 4) comparison of the facet structure of life science and literature in DDC and CC. This study suggests following conclusions. 1) CC follows throughly the classification principles by Ranganathan, but all classification theories are not property applied to DDC yet. 2) Because DDC does not have any formula to classify the compound subject, but has to follow the compounding methods presented in each subject, its facet structure is too complicated. 3) DDC has transformed the entire system into the facet structure through its revision. Expecially the life science transformed into the facet structure employed the facet indicators and applies them to all the systems in life science. But the notations have sometimes twofold meanings, and no ability to differentiate the meanings in the same notation,. When DDC follows the classification method by facet, the number of items for classification so limited that it is difficult to array the subdivision and that length of notation becomes longer and longer.

  • In this paper, we explored the new method for extracting feature from the electroencephalography (EEG) signal based on linear regression technique with the orthonormal polynomial bases. At first, EEG signals from electrodes around motor cortex were selected and were filtered in both spatial and temporal filter using band pass filter for alpha and beta rhymic band which considered related to the synchronization and desynchonization of firing neurons population during motor imagery task. Signal from epoch length 1s were fitted into linear regression with Legendre polynomials bases and extract the linear regression weight as final features. We compared our feature to the state of art feature, power band feature in binary classification using support vector machine (SVM) with 5-fold cross validations for comparing the classification accuracy. The result showed that our proposed method improved the classification accuracy 5.44% in average of all subject over power band features in individual subject study and 84.5% of classification accuracy with forward feature selection improvement.

  • The purpose of this study is to build a general principle for the automatic book-classification which can be put to use in library operation, and to present a methodology of the automatic classification for the library. Since the enumerative classification scheme which exist as manual systems cannot be a n.0, pplied to the automation of classification, the principles of Colon Classification by S.R. Ranganathan is brought in and studied. The result of the study can be summarized as follows: (1) Automatic book-classification can be performed by the principles of faceted classification. (2) This study presents a general and an a n.0, pplication principles for the automatic book-classification. (3) File design for the automatic book-classification of a general classification is different from that of special classification, (4) The methodology is to classify the literature by inputting the title into a terminal. In addition, the expected Value from the Automatic Book-classification is as follows: (1) The prompt and accurate process of classification is possible. (2) Though a book is classified in any library it can have the same classification number. (3) The user can retrieve the classification code of a book for which he or she wants to search through the dialogue with the computer. (4) Since the concept coordination method is employed, even the representing of a multi-subject concept is made simple. (5) By performing automatic book-classification, the automation of library operation can be completed.
