Experiments in low strain rate methane-air counterflow diffusion flames diluted with $CO_2$ have been conducted to investigate the flame extinction behavior and edge flame oscillation in which flame length is less than the burner diameter and thus lateral conductive heat loss in addition to radiative loss could be remarkable at low global strain rates. The critical mole fraction at flame extinction is examined in terms of velocity ratio and global strain rate. It is seen that flame length is closely relevant to lateral heat loss, and this sheets flame extinction and edge flame oscillation considerably. Lateral heat loss causes flame oscillation even at fuel Lewis number less than unity. Edge flame oscillations are categorized into three: a growing-, a harmonic- and a decaying-oscillation mode. Onset conditions of the edge flame oscillation and the relevant modes are examined with global strain rate and $CO_2$ mole fraction in fuel stream. A flame stability map based on the flame oscillation modes is also provided at low strain rate flames.
We report a theoretical description of ferromagnetic vortex motion in sub-micrometer size magnetic thin film. Based on Thiele's equation combined with later theoretical achievements, we derive the analytic description of dynamics of ferromagnetic vortex core as a damped harmonic oscillatory motion. Consequently, the relations about frequency and damping constant in damped harmonic oscillation are presented. The validity of the results is verified through micromagnetic simulation.
Interleaving techniques are widely used to reduce input/output ripples and to increase the power capacity of boost converters operating in critical conduction mode. Two types of phase-shift control schemes are studied in this paper, the turn-on time shifting method and the turn-off time shifting method. It is found that although the turn-off time shifting method exhibits better performance, it suffers from sub-harmonic oscillations at high input voltages. To solve this problem, an intensive quantitative analysis of the sub-harmonic oscillation phenomenon is made in this paper. Based upon that, a novel modified turn off time shifting control scheme for interleaved boost converters operating in critical conduction mode is proposed. An important advantage of this scheme is that both the master phase and the slave phase can operate stably in critical conduction mode without any oscillations in the full input voltage range. This method is implemented with a FPGA based digital PWM control platform, and tests were carried out on a two-phase interleaved boost PFC converter prototype. Experimental results demonstrated the feasibility and performance of the proposed phase-shift control scheme.

Recently, there are a lot of papers in order to replace the electrolytic capacitor into the film capacitor in output of PFC(Power Factor Correction). However, the film capacitor, which has capacitance of low values, causes a large ripple voltage in output of PFC. The LED drivers are connected series in the output of PFC and affected by the magnitude of voltage ripple. In this paper, we have compared the fixed frequency method with the variable frequency for the constant-current control and propose the control method to avoid the sub-harmonic oscillation in the variable input voltage. An 80W PFC, using film capacitors instead of electrolytic capacitors, and LED driver has been built and compared the fixed frequency control method with the variable frequency control method.

A wide-bandwidth current controller is required for fast charging/discharging of super capacitor applications. Peak current mode is generally used to accomplish fast charging/discharging because this mode has fast response characteristics. However, the peak current mode control must have a slope compensation function to restrain sub-harmonics oscillation. The slope must be changed accordingly if the controlled output voltage is varied. However, changing the slope for every changed output voltage is not easy. The other solution, selecting the slope as the maximum value, causes a slow response problem to occur. Therefore, we propose a hybrid mode controller that uses a peak current and a newly specified valley current. Through the proposed hybrid mode control, the sub-harmonic oscillation does not occur when the duty is larger than 0.5 because of the fast response.

This paper presents a multiband octa-phase LC VCO for SDR receiver. Four identical LC VCOs are connected by using series coupling transistor to obtain the octa-phase signal and low phase noise characteristic. For a multiband application, a band tuning circuit that consists of a switch capacitor circuit and two MOS varactors is proposed. As the MOS switch is on/off state, the frequency range will be varied. In addition, two varactors make the VCO be immune to process variation of the oscillation frequency. The VCO is designed in 0.18-um CMOS technology, consumes 12mA current from 1.8V supply voltage and operates with a frequency band from 885MHz to 1.342GHz (41% tuning range). As driving sub-harmonic mixer, the proposed VCO covers 3 standards(CDMA 2000 1x, WCDMA, WiBro). The measured phase noise is -105dBc@100kHz, -115dBc@1MHz, -130dBc@10MHz for CDMA 2000 1x, WCDMA, WiBro respectively.

Torsional oscillations of a system incorporating a Hooke's joint are investigated by studying a simple similar nonlinear 2-degree-of-freedom model, which has linear and quadratic nonlinear parametric excitations. The simple system is identified to have the possibilities of primary, sub harmonic and combination resonances. The case of simultaneous primary and combination resonances is selected for perturbation analysis to have the reduced amplitude-equations of motion. The same procedure is applied to the system incorporating a Hooke's joint.
A novel digital current control strategy for digitally controlled DC-DC switching converters, referred to as Adjacent Cycle Sampling (ACS), is proposed in this paper. For the ACS current control strategy, the available time interval from sampling the current to updating the duty ratio, is approximately one switching cycle. In addition, it is independent of the duty ratio. As a result, the contradiction between the processing speed of the hardware and the transient response speed can be effectively relaxed by using the ACS current control strategy. For digitally controlled buck DC-DC switching converters with trailing-edge modulation, digital current control algorithms with the ACS control strategy are derived for three different control objectives. These objectives are the valley, average, and peak inductor currents. In addition, the sub-harmonic oscillations of the above current control algorithms are analyzed and eliminated by using the digital slope compensation (DSC) method. Experimental results based on a FPGA are given, which verify the theoretical analysis results very well. It can be concluded that the ACS control has a faster transient response speed than the time delay control, and that its requirements for hardware processing speed can be reduced when compared with the deadbeat control. Therefore, it promises to be one of the key technologies for high-frequency DC-DC switching converters.

This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a flexibly mounted and rigid cylinder with two-degrees-of-freedom with respect to varying ratio of in-line natural frequency to cross-flow natural frequency, $f^*$, at a fixed low mass ratio. Combined in-line and cross-flow motion was observed in a sub-critical Reynolds number range. Three-dimensional displacement meter and tension meter were used to measure dynamic responses of the model. To validate the results and the experiment system, x and y response amplitudes and ratio of oscillation frequency to cross-flow natural frequency were compared with other experimental results. It has been found that the higher harmonics, such as third and more vibration components, can occur on a certain part of steel catenary riser under a condition of dual resonance mode. In the present work, however, due to the limitation of a size of circulating water channel, the whole test of a whole configuration of the riser at an adequate scale for VIV phenomenon was not able to be conducted. Instead, we have modeled a rigid cylinder and assumed that the cylinder is a part of steel catenary riser where the higher harmonic motions could occur. Through the experiment, we have found that even though the cylinder was assumed to be rigid, the occurrence of the higher harmonic motions was observed in a small reduced velocity ($V_r$) range, where the influence of the in-line response is relatively large. The transition of the vortex shedding mode from one to another was examined by using time history of x and y directional displacement over all experimental cases. We also observed the influence of in-line restoring force power spectral density with $f^*$.
