  • The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of a two-terminal tandem solar cell depends upon the tunnel-recombination junction (TRJ) between the top and bottom sub-cells. An optimized TRJ in a tandem cell helps improve its open-circuit voltage (Voc), short-circuit current density (Jsc), fill factor (FF), and efficiency (PCE). One of the parameters that affect the TRJ is the buffer layer thickness. Therefore, we investigated various TRJs by varying the thickness of the buffer or intermediate layer (TRJ-buffer) in between the highly doped p-type and n-type layers of the TRJ. The TRJ-buffer layer was p-type nc-Si:H, with a doping of 0.06%, an activation energy (Ea) of 43 meV, an optical gap (Eg) of 2.04 eV, and its thickness was varied from 0 nm to 125 nm. The tandem solar cells we investigated were a combination of a heterojunction with intrinsic thin layer (HIT) bottom sub-cell and an a-Si:H (amorphous silicon) top sub-cell. The initial cell efficiency without the TRJ buffer was 7.65% while with an optimized buffer layer, its efficiency improved to 11.74%, i.e., an improvement in efficiency by a factor of 1.53.

  • The optical transmittance of Mn-doped SnO2 monolayer film increased gradually from 80.9 to 85.4 % at 550 nm wavelengths upon increasing the O2/Ar+O2 concentration rate from 0 to 7.9 % and the band gap energy changed from 3.0 to 3.6 eV. The resistivity tended to decrease from 3.21 Ω·cm to 0.03 Ω·cm, reaching a minimum at 2.7 %, and then gradually increased from 0.03 to 52.0 Ω·cm at higher O2/Ar+O2 gas concentration ratio. Based on XPS spectra analysis, the Sn 3d5/2 peak of Mn-doped SnO2 single layer shifted slightly from 486.40 to 486.58 and O1s peak also shifted from 530.20 to 530.33 eV with increase the O2/Ar+O2 concentration ratio. Therefore, the XPS spectra results indicate that a multiphase with SnO and SnO2 coexisted in the sputtered Mn-doped SnO2 monolayer film.

  • BOG (Boil Off Gas) generation is unavoidable in the liquefied hydrogen carrier, and proper measures are necessary to prevent pressure problems inside the cargo tank. The BOG can be used as propulsion fuel for ships, and the remaining parts used for propulsion must be effectively managed, such as in the form of reliquefying or burning. This study proposes an BOG reliquefaction system optimized for a 160,000 m3 liquefied hydrogen carrier with a hydrogen propulsion system. The system comprises a hydrogen compression and helium refrigerant section, and increases the efficiency by effectively using the cold energy of the BOG discharged from the cargo tank. In this study, the system was evaluated through the exergy efficiency and SEC (Specific Energy Consumption) analysis according to the rate of the reliquefaction of the BOG while the hydrogen BOG with a supply temperature of -220℃ entered the reliquefaction system. As a result, it showed SEC of 4.11 kWh/kgLH2 and exergy efficiency of 60.1% at the rate of reliquefaction of 20%. And the parametric study of the effects of varying the hydrogen compression pressure, inlet temperature of the hydrogen expander, and the feed hydrogen temperature was conducted.

  • We propose and experimentally demonstrate a service-aware optical transport system. The proposed service-aware optical transport system makes a flow based on service type and priority of traffic. The generated flow is mapped to a corresponding sub-${\lambda}$ for transport over an optical network. Using sub-${\lambda}$ provided by the centralized control plane, we could effectively provide quality-of-service guaranteed Ethernet service and best-effort service simultaneously in a single link. The committed information rate (CIR) traffic and best-effort traffic are assigned to different sub-${\lambda}s$. The bandwidth of the CIR traffic is guaranteed without being affected by violation traffic because the bandwidth is managed per each sub-${\lambda}$. The failure detection time and restoration time from a link failure is measured to be about 60 ${\mu}s$ and 22 ms, respectively, in the ring network. The measured restoration time is much smaller than the 50 ms industry requirement for real-time services. The fast restoration time allows the proposed service-aware optical transport system to offer high availability and reliability which is a requirement for transport networks.

  • The effect of temperature and vanadium metal concentration on the electronic and thermoelectric properties of Si in the diamond cubic structure has been investigated using a combination of density functional theory simulations and the semi classical Boltzmann's theory. The BotzTrap code within the constant relaxation time approximation has been used to obtain the Seebeck coefficient and other transport properties of interest for alloys of the structure $Si_{1-x}V_x$, where x is 0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.375, and 0.5. The thermoelectric properties have been extracted for a temperature range of 300 K to 1,000 K. The general trend with V atom substitution for Si causes the Seeback coefficient to increase and the thermal conductivity to decrease for the various alloys. The optimum values are for $Si_5V_3$ and $Si_4V_4$ alloys for charge carrier concentrations of $10^{21}cm^{-3}$ in the mid temperature range of 500~800 K. This is a very desirable effect for a promising thermoelectric and the figure of merit ZT approaches 0.2 at 600 K for the p-type $Si_5V_3$ alloy.

  • Phase diagrams of electron- and hole-doped $Sr_2VO_3FeAs$ are investigated using Co and Mn substitution at Fe site. Metallic nature survives only for Co (electron) doping, not for Mn (hole) doping. The conductivity of $Sr_2VO_3(Fe,M)As$ (M=Mn,Co) is sensitive to the structural modification of FeAs microstructure rather than carrier doping. This finding implies that the FeAs layer plays a dominant role on the charge conduction, thus the $SrVO_3$ layers should be considered as an insulating block. Also, we found that the superconductivity is rapidly suppressed by both dopants. This result is different from the conventional behavior that superconductivity is induced by doping in the most of Fe pnictides. Our finding strongly supports the uniqueness of $Sr_2VO_3FeAs$ among the Fe pnictide superconductors.

  • Recently, there has been an increase in the demand for natural gas as a source of clean energy, which has increased the demand for LNG carriers. However, LNG carriers require a capital investment to obtain equipment for the regasification process, which prevents fires and explosions. Thus, on account of NIMBY, a CNG carrier is suggested that eliminates the need for regasification equipment. Meanwhile, carbon dioxide emissions are more and more regulated by international conventions such as the Kyoto Protocol. Because of this, $CO_2$ carriers have also received international attention as a methodology to transport and store $CO_2$ cargoes. Several vessels or tanks to transport and store $CO_2$ gas have been studied in various countries. This paper proposes a conceptual design for a 20ft container shaped tank to effectively transport small cargoes of $CO_2$ and CNG. The proposed pressure vessel or tank will be carried by a conventional containership or special cargo ship. The influences of the design parameters for proposed pressure vessel or tank. Including the materials, scantlings, and shape of the pressure vessel, are studied theoretically and computationally.

  • We have focused on the conversion efficiency of CIGS thin film solar cell prepared by co-evaporation method as well as the optimization of process condition. The total thickness of back electrode was fixed at 1 ${\mu}m$ and the structural, electric and optical properties of CIGS thin film were investigated by varying the thickness of Mo:Na bottom layer from 0 to 500 nm. From the experimental results, the content of Na was appeared as 0.28 atomic percent when the thickness of Mo:Na layer was 300 nm with compactly densified plate-shape surface morphology. From the XRD measurements, (112) plane was the strongest preferential orientation together with secondary (220) and (204) planes affecting to the crystallization. The lowest roughness and resistivity were 2.67 nm and 3.9 ${\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, respectively. In addition, very high carrier density and hole mobility were recorded. From the optimization of Mo:Na layer, we have achieved the conversion efficiency of 9.59 percent.

  • A synthesis method for a chitosan-coated magnetic drug-delivery system of cisplatin is proposed. Here, cisplatin was conjugated to the surface of Magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) nanoparticles via a (3-Aminopropyl)-trimethoxysilane (APTS) coupling agent. To reduce the cytotoxic effect of cisplatin, the magnetic drug was then encapsulated in chitosan (CS-cisplatin-$Fe_3O_4$) through the water/oil (W/O) emulsion method. The CS-cisplatin-$Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles were synthesized in a spherical shape with a diameter of 190 nm. The cytotoxicity assay was performed using HeLa cells. The cisplatin uptake of the cells was determined using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to calculate the drug content. The controlled release of cisplatin was demonstrated by regulating the dissolution and diffusion of the drug through the chitosan matrix.

  • The optical properties of the digital-alloy $(In_{0.53}Ga_{0.47}As)_{1-z}/(In_{0.52}Al_{0.48}As)_z$ grown by molecular beam epitaxy as a function of composition z (z = 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8) have been studied using temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL (TRPL) spectroscopy. As the composition z increases from 0.4 to 0.8, the PL peak energy of the digital-alloy $In(Ga_{1-z}Al_z)As$ is blueshifted, which is explained by the enhanced quantization energy due to the reduced well width. The decrease in the PL intensity and the broaden FWHM with increasing z are interpreted as being due to the increased Al contents in the digital-alloy $In(Ga_{1-z}Al_z)As$ because of the intermixing of Ga and Al in interface of InGaAs well and InAlAs barrier. The PL decay time at 10 K decreases with increasing z, which can be explained by the easier carrier escape from InGaAs wells due to the enhanced quantized energies because of the decreased InGaAs well width as z increases. The emission energy and luminescence properties of the digitalalloy $(InGaAs)_{1-z}/(InAlAs)_z$ can be controlled by adjusting composition z.
