  • Tensile properties including Young's modulus and tear strength were measured for four different rubber compounds; natural rubber(NR), styrene-butadiene copolymer(SBR), ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM), and brominated isobutylene-p-methyl-styrene copolymer(BIMS) as a function of temperature and degree of cure. To see the effect of over cure, a measurement was made of the tensile strength and swelling behavior of the over-cured rubber compounds. Young's modulus, E, was found to have linear dependency on the degree of cure for all rubber compounds. EPDM and BIMS showed the highest and lowest slopes, respectively. The slope of NR and SBR lay between EPDM and BIMS. Tear strength, Gc, decreased in the order of NR>BIMS>SBR>EPDM. As the cure time was extended the degree of cure of NR and SBR decreased, while that of BIMS increased. EPDM showed little change in the degree of cure.

  • Influence of the filler composition ratio on cure characteristics and bound rubber content of the compounds and on physical properties of the vulcanizates were studied using both silica and carbon black-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds with the total filler content of 80.0 phr. The bound rubber content increased slightly with increase of the silica content ratio. The viscosity also increased with increasing the silica content ratio, especially increased steeply after the silica content of 60.0 phr. The cure times obtained with a rheometer, t2, t40, and t90, are increased by increasing the silica content ratio and the cure rate decreased. The delta torque increased with the increased silica content ratio. Variation or the modulus with the silica content ratio showed a decreased trend though the delta torque increased. The tan ${\delta}$ at $60^{\circ}C$ decreased with increased of the silica content ratio.

  • Five solution styrene butadiene rubber/neodymium butadiene rubber (SSBR/NdBR) composites were manufactured using different ratios of SSBR and NdBR. In this study, the composites were reinforced with NdBR and silica to confirm the physical properties of SSBR used for treads of automobile tires and the dispersibility with silica. The morphologies of the rubber composites were observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The crosslinking behaviors of the composites were tested using a rubber process analyzer (RPA), and the abrasion resistances were tested using a National Bureau of Standards (NBS) abrasion tester. The hardness values, tensile strengths, and cold resistances of the composites were also tested according to ASTM standards. Increased NdBR content yielded composites with excellent crosslinking properties, abrasion resistances, hardnesses, tensile strengths, and cold resistances. The crosslinking point increased due to the double bond in NdBR, thereby increasing the degree of crosslinking in the composites. The NdBR-reinforced composites exhibited excellent abrasion resistances, which is explained as follows. In SSBR, a breakage is permanent because a resonance structure between styrene and SSBR forms when the molecular backbone is broken during the abrasion process. However, NdBR forms an additional crosslink due to the breakdown of the molecular backbone and high reactivity of the radicals produced. In addition, the low glass transition temperature (Tg) of NdBR provided the rubber composites with excellent cold resistances.

  • A premixing effect for the properties of carbon black-filled rubber compounds was investigated using biblends of natural rubber (NR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and butadiene rubber (BR). Degree of mixing of the biblends was controlled by preblending time of 0.0, 2.5, and 5.0 min. Mooney viscosities of the compounds decreased by increasing the preblending time. Of three carbon black-filled compounds of NR/SBR, NR/BR, and SBR/BR compounds, only the SBR/BR blends showed a specific cure characteristics depending on the preblending time. For the bound rubber composition, the NR content was higher than SBR and BR. The difference in the rubber composition ratio of the bound rubber became smaller with increasing the preblending time. Physical properties of the vulcanizates such as hardness, modulus, tensile property, abrasion loss, and tans were also compared. Differences in properties of the compounds were discussed with miscibility of the dissimilar rubbers and degree of mixing.

  • This paper deals with the interfacial effects of silica fume (SF) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) on compressive strength of concrete. Analyzing the compressive strength results of 32 concrete mixes performed over two water-binder ratios (0.35, 0.45), four percentages replacement of SF (0, 5, 7.5, and 10 %) and four percentages of SBR (0, 5, 10, and 15 %) were investigated. The results of the experiments were showed that in 5 % of SBR, compressive strength rises slightly, but when the polymer/binder materials ratio increases, compressive strength of concrete decreases. A mathematical model based on Abrams' law has been proposed for evaluation strength of SF-SBR concretes. The proposed model provides the opportunity to predict the compressive strength based on time of curing in water (t), and water, SF and SBR to binder materials ratios that they are shown with (w/b), (s) and (p).This understanding model might serve as useful guides for commixture concrete admixtures containing of SF and SBR. The accuracy of the proposed model is investigated. Good agreements between them are observed.

  • The electrical conductivity during vulcanization process was measured as a function of time for the system of TiC loaded styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites. The phenomenon of negative and positive temperature coefficients of conductivity and its conduction mechanism were also studied for the SBR polymeric composites. The current-voltage characteristics of the polymeric composites were non-linear in high voltage and showed a switching effect. The effects of temperature on the thermal conductivity and effective dielectric constant were measured. The measured parameters were found to be dependent on TiC concentration. The electromagnetic wave shielding (EMS) of the SBR-TiC polymeric composite was also examined. The SBR filled with TiC could be expected to be promising novel smart polymeric composites for self-electrical heating, temperature sensor, time delay switching, and electro-magnetic wave shielding effectiveness.

  • The graft polymerization of 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate(HEMA) and vinyltriethoxysilane(VTES) onto styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer(SBS) was carried out in toluene, with radical initiator such as benzoyl peroxide(BPO) and 2, 2'-azo-bis-isobutyronitrile(AIBIN) under nitrogen atmosphere. The degree of grafting was increased with the increases of the reaction temperature and time. And the effeciency of BPO was superior to that of AIBN. The mechanical properties and molecular weight of graft products were measured and the applicability as adhesive of plasticized PVC leather was examined.
