Family Stress, Work Stress and Psychological Well-being in Employed Men and Women (기혼 취업여성과 남성의 가족 및 직업 스트레스와 심리적 복지)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of family stress on work stress and to examine the effects of family and work stress on psychological wellbeing in employed men and women. The analyses of the present study were based on a sample of 263 full-time employed men and 258 full-time employed women aged 30-49 in dual-earner families. There were significant gender differences in marital stress, parenting stress and psychological well-being with women reporting higher levels of stress. However, employed men and women experienced similar levels of work stress. The results from regression analyses showed that stress in the family domain contributed significantly to work stress. Both marital stress and parenting stress were significantly related to higher levels of work stress fro employed men and women. The findings of this study indicated that higher levels of marital stress and work stress were predictive of psychological well-being for men and women in dual-earner couples. Among employed women, marital stress and work stress were more highly related to psychological well-being than among employed men.

A Study of Stress Factors Experienced by the Hospitalized Patients (입원이 불안감(Stress)으로서 환자에게 미치는 영향에 관한 일 연구)

  • As the hospitalized patients will be facing new stress situation due to change of his environment from home to hospital it will be very important to understand the psychological stress experienced by hospital patients not only for helping patients in the process of recovery from illness but also fulfil1ing the objective of comprehensive nursing care by understanding the needs of the patients. There is no doubt that it would be very helpful for treatment of patients as well as for improvement of nursing care if we know more about psychological needs of patients and give them adequate support to meet these needs. The study to find out the causes and degree of stress events experienced by hospitalized patients, with the objective of instituting improvement of nursing care program based on the needs of patients, was conducted during the month of September 1974 with 60 patients randomly selected from those admitted to medical and surgical wards at Yonsei Medical Center in that period The questionnaire form included 36 questions which are considered to be stress events for hospital patients, and was devide into five areas namely, such events related to 1) disease itself, 2) hospital environment, 3) nursing care and treatment, 4) communication and human relations, and 5) family and economic problems. The results of the study were as follows: 1. It was confirmed that hospitalization considered to be a stress producing factor and most patients perceived the admission to hospital as a stress factor. 2. According to the rating scale, it was found that degree of perceived stress shows a variation according to the source of stress producing event. 3. No significant differences in the mean values were observed statistically with the perceived stress levels according to demographic and other variables of patients related to hospitalization. 4. Among the questions related to disease itself, "Admission for surgery" was perceived most frequently as a stress event (97.14%) by patients. 5. With regard to the questions related to hospital environment, "death of the patient room-mate" was the most serious stress event perceived by patients (90%) and "living with hospital regulations"was considered to be less serious stress event (23.33%). 6. As for the questions related to nursing care and treatment, "limitation of freedom" was perceived as a stress factor most frequently (70.91%) by the patients and "worry for wrong treatment" turned out to be less frequent stress event (50.0%). 7. As for the questions related to communication and human relations, "difficulty to meet doctors when wanted"appeared to be the most frequent stress event by the respondents (75.86%) , followed by "no explanation about treatment or examination"(75.0%) and "no explanation about nursing care procedures"(71.66%). 8. With regard 111 tile questions related to family and economic problems, "inadequate finances for family living due to hospitalization"and "high cost of hospitalization" were the most frequent cause of stress mentioned by the patients. (80.0%). 9. As a result of application of the stepwise regression analysis, it was found that about 89% was explained by those events associated with disease itself, hospital environment and family and economic problems. By adding those events related to "nursing care and treatment" and "communication and human relation", 100% of stress associated with hospitalization was explained.

Comparision of Job Stress according to Job-Related Properties in Call Center Employees (콜센터 고객 상담원의 직무 특성에 따른 직무 스트레스 비교 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze factors related to the job stress experienced by call center employees at public institutions, so as to provide basic data to relieve work-related stress and enhance the job satisfaction of such employees. To promote objectivity and representation, the study was conducted by way of survey, the subjects being call center employees in 8 public institutions that operate call centers, which are located in the Busan and Seoul areas. Of the 240 surveys distributed, 196 were collected and 173 of those were used for analysis after eliminating 25 with insufficient responses. The results of this study are as follows. First, in terms of general properties, it was determined that employees with higher levels of education and families to support had greater job stress. second, in terms of job-related properties, employees who were unsatisfied with the job, HR policies, and their relationship with superiors and/or colleagues had greater job stress. In terms of the group that was satisfied compared with the group that was unsatisfied with the job, HR policies, and their relationship with superiors and/or colleagues, regular workers had less job stress than irregular workers.

Effects of the Comprehensive Nursing Care Service Ward Nurses Occupational Stress on Safety Control and Patient Safety-related Nursing Activities (간호·간병 통합서비스 병동 간호사의 직무 스트레스가 안전통제감과 환자안전관리 활동에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is a descriptive research study to identify the relevance of the occupational stress, safety control, and patient safety-related nursing activities of the nurses working in comprehensive nursing care service ward, and to check the effect of the occupational stress on safety control and patient safety-related nursing activities. From March 11 to April 17, 2019, 137 nurses who worked in comprehensive nursing care service ward at four general hospitals were studied. The results of this study suggest that occupational stress has a negative correlation with safety control and patient safety-related nursing activities, and occupational stress negatively affects safety control and patient safety-related nursing activities. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that the work environment will be improved to reduce the occupational stress in order to promote the safety control and patient safety-related nursing activities of nurses in comprehensive nursing care service ward, and the development of various programs for occupational stress management will be necessary.

Relationship between job stress and oral health-related quality of life in the blue collar workers (생산직 근로자의 직무스트레스와 구강건강 관련 삶의 질의 관련성)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between job stress and oral health-related quality of life in the blue collar workers. Methods: This study has been conducted with subjects of blue-collar workers who work in the industrial section located in Gyeongnam area from August 2013 to September 2013. Korean Occupational Stress Scale(KOSS-SF) and oral health impact profile(OHIP-14) were used as research tools. Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Overall job stress and oral heal-related quality of life level of subjects were $57.32{\pm}8.03$ and $14.17{\pm}9.27$. The influential factors of oral heal-related quality of life of blue-collar workers were job demand, interpersonal conflict and organizational climate (subcategory of job stress), respectively. Conclusions: It is necessary to improve the better working condition for the oral health-related quality of life due to job stress in the blue collar workers.

The Study on the Effect of the Maternal Parenting Stress on the Children Depression (아동의 우울에 영향을 미치는 어머니 관련변인에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this research is to delineate the effect of maternal variables of the children's depression. Such variables as the mother's age, her education level and maternal parenting stress have been chosen for the analysis. The sample subject were 659 pairs of fifth/sixth grade of elementary school and first/second grade of middle school and their mothers. The data were analyzed frequency, percentage, factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The major findings of the research are as follows : First, the children's depression is significantly related to mother's education level but the children's depression is not significantly related to mother's age. Second, parenting stress related to temperament, relationship and learning expectation is significantly related to children's depression. Third, the result of step multiple regression analysis on the effects of the maternal variables to the children's depression indicates that maternal parenting stress related to temperament, relationship and mother education level are the significant contributing factor. All in all, the maternal variables account for 7% of the children's depression score.

Effects of Aroma Foot Bath on Urination Status and Stress related to Urination in Patients with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate effects of aroma foot bath on urination status (Prostatic Symptom and bother score due to urinary symptoms) and stress related to urination in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Methods: This study consists of pre- and post-tests in a non-equivalent group design. The 52 BPH patients selected by random sampling in G City were assigned to two groups (experimental group=26, control group=26). Data of their general characteristics, urination status and stress related to urination were collected using self-reported questionnaires. Aroma Foot Bath was performed to the experimental group for 15-20 minutes every day for a week. Descriptive statistics and independent t-test were used for the analyses in this study with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 version program. Results: Prostatic symptom and bother score due to urinary symptoms in the experimental group were improved than those in the control group (t=-7.94, p<.001). Compared to the control group, the stress related to urination in the experimental group (t=-8.78, p<.001) was significantly reduced (t=-5.21, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that aroma foot bath is effective in improving urination status and reducing stress related to urination in BPH patients.

A Study on the Correlation among Occupational Stress, Depression, Health-Related Behavior and Type A Behavior Patterns of Male Workers at a Steel Factory (철강회사 남성 근로자의 직무스트레스, 우울, 건강관련 행위, A형 성격과의 관련성)

  • Purpose: This study investigates the relationship between job stress, depression, health-related behavior and type A behavior patterns among male workers at a steel factory. Methods: The study was done on 171 male workers, using the structured questionnaire. The data were collected in April, 2009 and analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and pearson correlation coefficient. Results: The results showed that 65.5% of workers were under moderate stress, 25.7% high stress and 0.6% extremely high stress. The overall score of these workers' occupational stress was 41.9, lower than the Korean workers' average. Occupational stress was correlated with depression, type A behavior patterns, a very poor physical condition without sufficient sleep. Conclusion: Stress management program is strongly needed for these subjects working over 45 hours a week, with a very poor subjective physical condition, insufficient sleep, type A behavior patterns and signs of severe depression. Further longitudinal study is recommended to show the effect of such worker's stress management program to mitigate job-related stress.

A Study of Nurses' Job Satisfaction (간호사의 직무만족 관련 요인)

  • Purpose: This study was performed to measure nurses' perception of job stress and job satisfaction, and to clarify the factors influential to their job satisfaction. Methods: Participants were 169 nurses working at a general hospital. Data were collected with self-administrated questionnaires and analyzed by SPSS/PC WIN 15.0. Results: Subjects perceived that job stress was higher than 'middle (3)', job satisfaction was lower than 'middle (3)', and job-related stress detrimental to job satisfaction. Influential factors for job satisfaction in a 2008 survey were duty-related stress, working conditions, and knowledge/skill-related stress. Duty-related stress and working conditions were cited as influential in a 2009 survey. The explained power for job satisfaction job was 32.5% in 2008 and 21.1% in 2009. Conclusions: Higher job-related stress detracts from job satisfaction. Hospital/nursing managers need to develop strategies that could improve the personal relationship between nurses and doctors, and provide administrative support to nurses. Provision of a financial personnel management plan could alleviate future nursing shortage triggered by job dissatisfaction.

Work-related Stress and Risk Factors among Korean Employees (한국 근로자의 업무관련성 스트레스와 위험요인)

  • Purpose: Work-related stress and risk factors among Korean employees were identified in this study. Methods: Data were obtained from employees aged 20 to 64 using the Korean Working Conditions Survey 2006 (KWCS). Multiple logistic regression analysis using SAS version 9.1 was performed to examine risk factors of work-related stress by gender. Results: The age-adjusted prevalence of work-related stress among male and female employees was 18.4% and 15.1% respectively. After adjustments for multiple variables among both male and female employees, there was a significant relationship between work-related stress and risk factors including education, company size, work time, ergonomic risks, biological chemical risks, and job demands. The significant variables for male employees were housework load, occupational class, and shift work, and for female employees, type of employment. Conclusion: There is a need to develop and support intensive stress management programs nationally giving consideration to work-related stress associated with working time, physical working environment, and job demands. Based on gender specific approaches, for male employes, stress management programs should be developed with consideration being given to occupational class and shift work. For stress management programs for female employees, consideration needs to be given to permanent employment status, specifically those in small companies.
