A computationally efficient stiffness design method for building structures is proposed in which dynamic soil-structure interaction based on the wave-propagation theory is taken into account. A sway-rocking shear building model with appropriate ground impedances derived from the cone models due to Meek and Wolf (1994) is used as a simplified design model. Two representative models, i.e. a structure on a homogeneous half-space ground and a structure on a soil layer on rigid rock, are considered. Super-structure stiffness satisfying a desired stiffness performance condition are determined via an inverse problem formulation for a prescribed ground-surface response spectrum. It is shown through a simple yet reasonably accurate model that the ground conditions, e.g. homogeneous half-space or soil layer on rigid rock (frequency-dependence of impedance functions), ground properties (shear wave velocity), depth of surface ground, have extensive influence on the super-structure design.
The authors suggest the algorithm for the static analysis of a three dimensional solid structure by using the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) and the hexahedral element of the finite element method (FEM). MATLAB codes were made by both FE-TSCM and FEM for the static analysis of three dimensional solid structure. They were applied to the static analyses of a very thick plate structure and a three dimensional solid structure. In this paper, as we compare the results of FE-TSCM with those of FEM, we confirm that FE-TSCM introducing the hexahedral element for the static analysis of a three dimensional solid structure is very effective from the viewpoint of the computational accuracy, speed, and storage.
In the fabrication of dry adhesive structure, increasing contact-points or contact-area is the primary goal because the adhesive force grows in proportion to the contact-area. The simplest way to extend the contact surface is the fabrication by using soft materials. However, the column-array structure could confront the matting phenomenon which columns are stuck together. Therefore, we need a novel design to reduce the effective stiffness with adequate stiff materials like a gecko's setae. In this study, we propose a novel design for the dry adhesive structure. Moreover, we analyzed whether the adhesive structure conforms the rough surface sufficiently through finite element method adopted the non-bonding interaction as the body force. Also, we fabricated the novel structures via UV lithography and some techniques. In addition, we examined the adhesive force of the novel structures.
This paper describes an experimental study on structural health monitoring of a 1:3-scaled one-story concrete frame subjected to seismic damage and retrofit. The structure is tested on a shaking table by exerting successively enhanced earthquake excitations until severe damage, and then retrofitted using fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP). The modal properties of the tested structure at trifling, moderate, severe damage and strengthening stages are measured by subjecting it to a small-amplitude white-noise excitation after each earthquake attack. Making use of the measured global modal frequencies and a validated finite element model of the tested structure, a neural network method is developed to quantitatively identify the stiffness reduction due to damage and the stiffness enhancement due to strengthening. The identification results are compared with 'true' damage severities that are defined and determined based on visual inspection and local impact testing. It is shown that by the use of FRP retrofit, the stiffness of the severely damaged structure can be recovered to the level as in the trifling damage stage.

Among the various problems involved in the structural analysis of the Korean traditional wooden structure, the analytical model for the Kong-Po is controversial subject as usual. While some experiments are tried for establishing the basis of analytical models, most of these experiments are performed using scale down specimens. So, it is not possible to apply these experimental results to structural analysis of Korean traditional wooden structure directly. A numerical study for analogizing the stiffness of full scale Kong-Po structure is performed on the basis of experimental specimen. Some parameter studies using finite element method are made in this study. The finite element analysis used in this study is geometric material nonlinear analysis. The stiffness of Kong-Po structure found out in this study can be used for modelling the joints of the Korean traditional wood structure in frame analysis.

Optimization of structure of a high-precision stamping press structure is performed by combination of Taguchi Method and finite element analysis. Too much difference in the stiffness between hydrostatic bearing linear guide and press structure is observed. Efforts are made to level up the stiffness of press structure to the level of hydrostatic bearing's. Some important design parameters are identified and discussed.
It has been known that one-dimensional rod theory is very effective as a simplified analytical approach to large scale or complicated structures such as high-rise buildings, in preliminary design stages. It replaces an original structure by a one-dimensional rod which has an equivalent stiffness in terms of global properties. If the structure is composed of distinct constituents of different stiffness such as coupled walls with opening, structural behavior is significantly governed by the local variation of stiffness. This paper proposes an extended version of the rod theory which accounts for the two-dimensional local variation of structural stiffness; viz, variation in the transverse direction as well as longitudinal stiffness distribution. The governing equation for the two-dimensional rod theory is formulated from Hamilton's principle by making use of a displacement function which satisfies continuity conditions across the boundary between the distinct structural components in the transverse direction. Validity of the proposed theory is confirmed by comparison with numerical results of computational tools in the cases of static, free vibration and forced vibration problems for various structures.

Very Large Floating Structure(VLFS) is regarded as one of promising candidates for the future utilization of ocean space. VLFS has the merits of small environmental effect. short construction term, easiness for extension and removal. It is well known that hydroelastic response is one of major design concerns of such a huge structure. Most of studies on the hydroelastic analysis of VLFS assumed uniform mass and bending stiffness. In case of a floating hotel where noticeable change of mass and stiffness at the hotel part is expected. it is necessary to investigate the effect of nonuniform mass and bending stiffness on the hydroelastic response. A model test of a pontoon type VLFS with nonuniform bending stiffness carried out for performance evaluation of a floating marina-hotel-convention center is described in this paper. Through investigation of model test results and comparison with numerical analysis using eigenfunction method, effect of the variation of bending stiffness is discussed.

In this research, a practical stiffness calculation method is developed and applied for modifying the height of the headstock, turret, and tailstock of a CNC lathe to enlarge the turntable diameter. The casting structure is assumed to be a rigid body and the linear motion element to be an elastic spring to simplify the turret stiffness calculation model. The stiffness of the sliding guide and ball screw of the original lathe is measured with a push tester and LVDT sensor, and the turret stiffness of the modified lathe is predicted and compared with experimental results to verify the model. The measured stiffness of the original turret is $0.17kN/{\mu}m$ and that of the modified turret is $0.11kN/{\mu}m$, i.e., an 18% difference from the predicted result. The verified stiffness calculation model can be used to develop another modified lathe.
A low-cycle loading experiment of 16 transfer column specimens was conducted to study the influence of parameters, likes the extension length of shape steel, the ratio of shape steel, the axial compression ratio and the volumetric ratio of stirrups, on the shear distribution between steel and concrete, the concrete damage state and the degradation of lateral stiffness. Shear force of shape steel reacted at the core area of concrete section and led to tension effect which accelerated the damage of concrete. At the same time, the damage of concrete diminished its shear capacity and resulted in the shear enlargement of shape steel. The interplay between concrete damage and shear force of shape steel ultimately made for the failures of transfer columns. With the increase of extension length, the lateral stiffness first increases and then decreases, but the stiffness degradation gets faster; With the increase of steel ratio, the lateral stiffness remains the same, but the degradation gets faster; With the increase of the axial compression ratio, the lateral stiffness increases, and the degradation is more significant. Using more stirrups can effectively restrain the development of cracks and increase the lateral stiffness at the yielding point. Also, a formula for calculating the yielding lateral stiffness is obtained by a regression analysis of the test data.
