  • The use of nanotechnology materials and applications in the construction industry should be considered for enhancing material properties. However, in this paper, the technical and economical assessment of applying silica nanoparticles for construction of concrete structure is studied. In order to obtain the equivalent material properties of the structure, the Mori-Tanaka model is used considering agglomeration of nanoparticles. The effect of using these nanoparticles on mechanical properties of concrete, such as the modulus of elasticity, compressive strength, as well as its indirect effect on armature percentage is investigated. Finally, the price of silica nanoparticles and its effect on the price increase of concrete structure is investigated. The results show that increasing the volume percent of silica nanoparticles up to 10% improves elastic modulus 111% and reduces amateur percentage up to 72%.

  • Structural damage is used to be modeled through reductions in the stiffness of structural elements for the purpose of damage estimation of structural system. In this study, the concept of joint damage is employed for more realistic damage assessment of a steel structure. The joint damage is estimated damage based on the mode shape informations using neural networks. The beam-to-column connection in a steel frame structure is represented by a rotational spring at the fixed end of a beam element. The severity of joint damage is defined as the reduction ratio of the connection stiffness with respect to the value of the intact joint. The concept of the substructural identification is used for the localized damage assessment in a large structure. The feasibility of the proposed method is examined using an example with simulated data. It has been found that the joint damages can be reasonably estimated for the case with the measurements of the mode vectors subjected to noise.

  • Ground movements during tunnelling have the potential for major impact on nearby buildings, utilities and streets. The impacts on buildings are assessed by linking the magnitude of ground loss at the source of ground loss around tunnel to the lateral and vertical displacements on the ground surface, and then to the lateral strain and angular distortion, and resulting damage in the building. To prevent or mitigate the impacts on nearby buildings, it is important to understand the whole mechanism from tunnelling to building damage. This paper discusses tunneling-induced ground movements and their impacts on nearby buildings, including the importance of the soil-structure interactions. In addition, a building damage criterion, which is based on the state of strain, is presented and discussed in detail and the overall damage assessment procedure is provided for the estimation of tunnelling-induced building damage considering the effect of soil-structure interaction.

  • The terrorist attack of September $11^{th}$ 2001 has enforced a new examination of the response of modern steel structures, such as those found in large warehouses, auditoriums and airport terminals, to terrorist bomb attack. The effort described in this paper assesses the potential damage to such a newly designed structure form a medium-size car bomb. The structure is mostly composed of a lightweight complex beam structure with large windows and skylights piercing through a corrugated roof. The structural response to the terrorist attack requires the modelling of various physics phenomena including bomb detonation, blast wave propagation, reflections, and refractions and resulting blast impact on the structure. Hence, a fluid/structure coupled methodology is used to perform the assessment.

  • Existing assessment methodologies present a considerable problem because of fuzzy situation of deterioration mechanism of concrete bridges; namely, qualitative, subjective or inconsistent. This paper discusses current assessment methods in aspect of uncertainty. The expert system, COBDA, is developed for consistent and fast assessment of deteriorantion of concrete bridges. Briefly introduced in this paper are the structure of expert system and several methodologies for decision making of deterioration situation and providing repair option. COBDA is configured by PROLOG for logic approach and expert system shell based on Bayesian subjective probability. The methodologies are illustrated and discussed by comparison of condition assessment results in a case study.

  • This paper provides FE and experimental validation of the defect assessment method for strength mismatched welded structures, resulting from the Brite Euram SINTAP (Structural Integrity Assessment Procedures for European Industry) project. This shows that the proposed method is conservative, and that the degree of conservatism is similar to that embedded in the methods for homogeneous structures. It provides confidence in the use of the proposed SINTAP method for assessing defective weld strength mismatched structures.

  • The buckling assessment of plate panels described in common structural rules (CSR) is to be determined according to the buckling utilization factor with hull girder stresses calculated on net hull girder sectional properties. As the thickness requirement for the buckling assessment of plate panels is not explicitly given in CSR, a lot of time is spent to find the proper thickness of plate panels until reaching to an allowable buckling utilization factor. In this study, in order to reduce time and cost, the thickness requirement of plate panels satisfying buckling assessment was derived. The structural design system included with the thickness requirement for buckling assessment was developed. The system is called as Oil-tanker Automated Structural Investigation System (OASIS). The design result of longitudinal strength members using OASIS was verified by Nauticus Hull which is the rule scantling software of DNV. Finally, optimum design of a double hull tanker for the minimum weight using OASIS was presented.

  • The main objectives of the study may be stated as follows : \circled1 the acquisition of fundamental updated data for the assessment of aged wharf structures of pier type based on systematic static/dynamic load testing \circled2 the study of techniques and methods for field testing \circled3 realistic safety and load carrying capacity assessment based on practical reliability analysis. In this study field testing of real structure is performed and the results are compared with those of the 2D and 3D linear structural analysis. It may be seen that the practical reliability methods can be applied for the safety and capacity assessment of aged wharf structures of pier type.

  • Damage assessment and Damage index for RC members failed in flexure was investigated by using the nonlinear finite element analysis, included with nonlocal constitutive law, which is analyzed for the localization of the failure on the post-peak region. In the nonlcal constitutive law, The local strains obtained at gauss points were averaged over a particular length, i.e. characteristic length and it was used to evaluate the damage of RC column member. As the analysis results, The value of nonlocal strain shows less mesh sensibility. In the damage assessment, It was confirmed that evaluations of damage of RC member were able to use nonlocal compressive strain on a cover concrete and a core concrete of the member. Moreover it was confirmed that damage process for the statically indeterminate structure was able to evaluate the damage context of the component members of the structure.
