The linear consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system consists of n components ordered linearly and fails if and only if at least k consecutive components fail. We assume that the failure times of components are independent and identical exponentially distributed. This paper develops a model to calculate the expected cost per unit time of a linear consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system. The optimization problem to find the system structure parameter k to minimize the expected cost per unit time is considered.

A fundamental structural design consideration for a vehicle is the overall vibration characteristics in bending and torsion. Vibration characteristics of a vehicle system are mainly influenced by dynamic stiffness of the vehicle body structure and material and physical properties of the components attached to the vehicle body structure. The first step in satisfying this requirement is to obtain a satisfactory dynamic model of the vehicle structure. In this paper. modeling techniques of the vehicle components are presented and the effects of the vehicle components on the vibration characteristics of the vehicle are investigated,

A dynamic-structure system is one that has the flexibility to change the system configuration automatically so as to operate in an optimal manner. A conceptural model for a dynamic-structure system is presented in this paper. In this model, the interchangeable components of the overall system are grouped together. Their activity levels are evaluated by an intelligent preprocessor that is associated with the group. A knowledge-based task distribution system evaluates the activity levels and makes decisions as to how the components operating below capacity should be shared with workcells that have similar components that are overloaded. Associated decision making can be effected through fuzzy logic and particularly the compositional rule of inference. A simulation example is given to illustrate the application of dynamic structuring.

In this paper we present the design of Low Noise Amplifier(LNA), mixer and filter for RF front-end part of partial discharge monitoring system. The monitoring system of partial discharge in high voltage power machinery is used to prevent many kinds of industrial accidents, and is usually composed of three parts - sensor, RF front-end and digital microcontroller unit. In our study, LNA, mixer and filter are key components of the RF front-end. The LNA consists of common gate and common source-cascaded structure and uses the resistive feedback for broad band matching. A coupled line structure is utilized to implement the filter, of which size is reduced by the meander structure. The mixer is designed using dual gate structure for high isolation between RF and local oscillator signal.
Modern systems development becomes more and more complicated due to the need on the ever-increasing capability of the systems. In addition to the complexity issue, safety concern is also increasing since the malfunctions of the systems under development may result in the accidents in both the test and evaluation phase and the operation phase. Those accidents can cause disastrous damages if explosiveness gets involved therein such as in weapon systems development. The subject of this paper is on how to incorporate safety requirements in the design of safety-critical systems. As an approach, a useful system structure using the method of design structure matrix (DSM) is studied while reflecting the need on systems safety. Specifically, the effects of system components failure are analyzed and numerically modeled first. Also, the system components are identified and their interfaces are represented using a component DSM. Combining the results of the failure analysis and the component DSM leads to a modified DSM. By rearranging the resultant DSM, a modular structure is derived with safety requirements incorporated. As a case study, application of the approach is also discussed in the development of a military UAV plane.

The purpose of this study is to develop a structural. analysis system of LNG pump tower structure. The system affords to build optimized finite element model and procedure of the pump tower structure. The pump tower structure is one of the most important components of LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers. The pump tower structure is subject to sloshing load of LNG induced by ship motion depending on filling ratio. Three types of loading components, which are thermal, inertia and self-gravity are considered in the analysis. All these design and analysis procedures are embedded in to the analysis system successfully.
In the areas susceptible to vibration and noise induced by railway traffic such as downtown area and stations under railway lines, the vibration and the structure-borne noise can be solved by floating slab track system separating the entire track structure from its sub-structure using anti-vibration mat or springs. In other countries, the core technologies for vibration-proof design and vibration isolator - one of key components - have been developed and many installation experiences have been accumulated. However, in Korea, since the design technology of system and components are not yet developed, the foreign systems are being introduced without any adjustment. Thus, in this study, the vibration isolator has been developed and its performance are investigated by the dynamic analysis of a station structure under railways lines and the floating slab track system. For this purpose, the loads transferred from the vibration isolator of the floating slab track were evaluated by train running simulation considering vehicle-track interaction, and then the dynamic analysis of station structure subjected to these loads was performed. The dynamic analysis results show that the proposed floating slab track can reduce the vibration of structure by about 25dB compared with that in conventional ballast track without floating system.

This paper investigates the plate loop heat pipe system with an evaporator mounted with fin-wick structure to dissipate effectively the heat generated by the electronic components. The heat transfer formulation is modeled and predicted through thermal resistance analysis of the fin-wick structure in the evaporator. The experimental approach measures the thermal resistances and the operating characteristics. These results gathered in this investigation have been used to the objective of the information to improve the LHP system design so as to apply as the future cooling devices of the electronic components.

Two experiments were conducted to examine the relationships between the color structure and the user preference of a CNS (Car Navigation System) digital map in terms of HSE (Human Sensibility Ergonomics). In the first experiment, the user's preference of color structures were investigated from the subjects' self-designed digital maps using a CNS digital map UIMS (User Interface Management System): in the second, statistical relation models between the user's color structure satisfaction level and the color components of CIE (Commission Internationale de ι'Eclairage) of the real products were suggested. For each experiment, CIE L*u*v* and CIE LCH color space were adapted, respectively, because they have their own characteristics of perceptual uniformity which enables the color components to transform a linear function.
Previous earthquakes show that, structural safety evaluations should include the evaluation of nonstructural components. Failure of nonstructural components can affect the operational capacity of critical facilities, such as hospitals and fire stations, which can cause an increase in number of deaths. Additionally, failure of nonstructural components may result in economic, architectural, and historical losses of community. Accelerations and random vibrations must be under the predefined limitations in structures with high technological equipment, data centers in this case. Failure of server equipment and anchored server racks are investigated in this study. A probabilistic study is completed for a low-rise rigid sample structure. The structure is investigated in two versions, (i) conventional fixed-based structure and (ii) with a base isolation system. Seismic hazard assessment is completed for the selected site. Monte Carlo simulations are generated with selected parameters. Uncertainties in both structural parameters and mechanical properties of isolation system are included in simulations. Anchorage failure and vibration failures are investigated. Different methods to generate fragility curves are used. The site-specific annual hazard curve is used to generate risk curves for two different structures. A risk matrix is proposed for the design of data centers. Results show that base isolation systems reduce the failure probability significantly in higher floors. It was also understood that, base isolation systems are highly sensitive to earthquake characteristics rather than variability in structural and mechanical properties, in terms of accelerations. Another outcome is that code-provided anchorage failure limitations are more vulnerable than the random vibration failure limitations of server equipment.
